Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above are the directions, make sure you have read and followed them.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

How long does ComboFix run? I think it's frozen up. I disabled my anti-virus and windows defender. When I run ComboFix it brings up a dos window with a message that say "Please wait. ComboFix is preparing to run." Then nothing else happens.

Since it's Vista, are you running combofix as Administrator? Here are a couple of suggestions:

Some problems which do come up when using Combofix with Vista are

1) hinderances through antivirus or anti-malware programs that are running. Please try disabling your Windows Defender and if that doesn't help, try disconnecting from the internet and then running it (while disconnected) with your antivirus program disabled.

2) Also, there are some things which prevent Combofix from running in normal mode. Try running it in safe mode and see if that works. To reach safe mode if you haven't done this, click on the F8 key about once a second during bootup until you get to the menu which allows different boot up options. Choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if you have that.

Thanks

I'm at wits end. I've tried this many times tracing my steps. I've disabled both Windows Defender and CA Antivirus. In fact, i had to look on the CA website to figure out how to disable the realtime scan using services.msc.

I've tried in Safe Mode and even Safe Mode with Networking.

I even tried w/ my network cable unplugged.

Every way I try it I get the same two messages before ComboFix runs.

The first pop up says "ComboFix has detected a real-time scanner running: * CA Anti Virus. Please disable before hitting OK."

After I verify it is disabled i click OK and get this message: "*CA Anti Virus: the above scanner is still running...."

For some reason ComboFix thinks CA Anit-Virus is still running. Any ideas?

Please continue even if you get that message, we need to get combofix to run.

Ran it again. Still got the same two pop ups. ComboFix stuck on blue screen that says "Preparing to Run."

Now my system will not boot in normal mode. It only boots in safe mode.

What next?

Try restarting the computer, then remove (delete) combofix from the computer. I believe you have problems other than malware and suggest you visit a Vista forum for help.

The only way you can sure of that is to format the hard drive. I do not own Vista, so I have never tried it with Vista, so you want to make sure this information says it applies to Vista.

good news. I just restored to a previous good setup. my system boots properly now.

Before I run ComboFix, I need help effectively deactivating CA Anti-Virus. Any advice there?

2009-04-09, 08:16
One last update. the CA.com site had, yet another way to disable CA Antivirus through a hidden screen by hitting ALT-D on the options menu w/in CA Anitivirus. When i did this, running in safe mode, i was successful at starting ComboFix w/out getting the pop-up messages warning me that CA Antivirus was still running.

However, i let ComboFix run for an hour and it never moved past the message that says "Please Wait. ComboFix is preparing to run."

Try deleting anything from combofix you have, then download it again from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

When you click the download, then click "Save this file Now"
Make sure you are saving it to the Desktop then change the
File name as seen in the screenshot below, then save it and see if it will run.

OK I tried renaming the file. That didn't work. ComboFix stalls out on this blue screen:

Because I do not own Vista, and my knowledge of the Operating System is limited, I do not want to force something and damage the computer. I suggest you take the computer to a free Vista forum, where they will be familiar with the OS.

Thanks...I will post those links again for you:
