Hi, I recently got a message from ms antispyware 2009 saying my computer was infected and swiftly closed this with the task manager. when this happened firefox went a bit mental, but it seems to be a bit better now (can use it). tried to open avast but it comes up that memory is infected so ran a boottime scan which turned up approx 12 infected readings (one of which included firefox and several were part of windows). Every so often avast throws up a small box which says alwil script blocking, I think? also tried to download and run malwarebytes a couple of times but to no avail, so tried to uninstall it but to no avail.

Then noticed a new desktop shortcut for, My Network Places and having given up with trying to fix the computer myself i right clicked on properties which opened a network connections page. when i closed this the malwarebytes icon had disappeared. probably unwisely i then opened the My Network Places and it had a msn link (or something to do with msn).

I also came across the ms antispyware programme in the control panel and removed it. I cant remember if i did this before or after i removed malwarebytes. I think it was probably before.

I also tried to diable the spybot teatimer but i couldnt open the program so ive deleted it.

Ive read through the before you post section and agree to the terms and conditions.

Thanks in advance (hope the rambling above hasnt bored you)

Downloaded HJT and heres the log

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

Thanks in advance (hope the rambling above hasnt bored you)
It's not that, it's just that there is no evidence of malware in the Hijackthis log and MBAM is one of the best programs we have for removing the junk. Have a look at this excellant tutorial from BleepingComputer:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-ms-antispyware-2009

Much of the new malware, expecially with this rouge junk is bundled with other junk that tries to block tools and help sites to force a purchase (fraud) and I can't really say what damage the junk may have done to your settings or programs. If you want me to see what I can help you find out, then we will start with MBAM, we may need other tools, make very sure you follow the directions as posted and that the program is updated before you run it.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Try renaming it, likely the malware is blocking it. Delete what you have, then click on this link: http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe
Then click "Save this file now" Make sure you are saving it to the Desktop, now change the File name to digfor.exe and then save it. Now doubleclick the digfor.exe on the Desktop and follow the prompts to install, update and run.

Thanks

hi, sorry for the delay, uninstalling took ages and the had to restart.

all files are automatically downloaded to the desktop and i renamed (thats probably not what you meant for me to do) it as digfor.exe.

again its taking a long time finish installing and after i restarted the computer a mesage came onto the screen saying that it couldnt find the c drive?? had to click on a prompt to get it going.

sorry this is probably v. frustrating for you

p.s its just after coming up as finished, but should it load automatically??

Let's see if you can get combofix to run:

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

OK, now you are getting there, look at Other Deletions and you can see the junk causing your problems. Proceed carefully and in the numnbered order.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

You may have to download MBAM again if you don't still have it, but it should run for you now.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

This can be done as time permits, but it is important, and may be why you are infected.

hi, managed to run malwarebytes this time and when doing so avast deleted approx 10 viruses. these included 'system volume restore' which malbytes also detected. I think ive had problems with this before and was wondering what the hell is it?

I also couldnt help noticing these entries in the combo fix log and was wondering had they been resolved (i was naturally drawn to the last one)

these included 'system volume restore'
Those are (infected) System Restore files which are protected. We will clean those before we finish.

I looked at those files and planned to revisit them when I say what MBAM came up with, we can look at them together. The first thing I want you to notice is the dates:

R2 NwSapAgent;SAP Agent;c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs [2004-08-04 14336] <<< 2004

R3 HSFHWATI;HSFHWATI;c:\windows\system32\drivers\HSFHWATI.sys [2005-08-22 231424] <<< 2005
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/HSFHWATI-21717.html
Conexant Systems SoftK56 Modem Driver.

S2 gupdate1c9610be83f8502;Google Update Service (gupdate1c9610be83f8502);c:\program files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe [2008-12-18 133104]
http://www.ghacks.net/2008/12/28/googleupdateexe/

S3 CTUPnPSv;Creative Centrale Media Server;c:\program files\Creative\Creative Centrale\CTUPnPSv.exe [2008-05-21 64000]
http://www.runscanner.net/fileinfo/CTUPnPSv.exe.html
Description: Creative Centrale Media Server Service

S3 MEMSWEEP2;MEMSWEEP2;\??\c:\windows\system32\5.tmp --> c:\windows\system32\5.tmp [?]
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/4742155458264581-X1/5.TMP.html
See if you can navigate to that file in red and delete it. You may need to show all hiudden files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

S3 SAgentDriver;SAgent Driver;\??\c:\program files\SoftActivity\Activity Logger\sagendrv.sys --> c:\program files\SoftActivity\Activity Logger\sagendrv.sys [?]

http://www.softactivity.com/

To recap: the first two items have been on the computer for years and might just be left from an old program. The next two are valid, the one highlited in red can be deleted.
The last one appears to be from an parental program to watch the activity of children on the computer. If you don't want it there, delete the program in red. I can't spot the program in the uninstall list and it may be that it was
uninstalled and that was leftover?

I'll let you resolve those issues, if you have problems let me know.

Let's see if we can wrap up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update Avast4 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

hi, updated avast and it came back all clear. also downloaded the secunia inspector (its a great tool).

I'll have to have another look for the 5.tmp folder over the weekend. opened the hidden files as suggested last night and searched for it but it wasnt found.

heading out of broadband coverage for a couple of days so wont be posting.

think alls well anyway, firefox may be a bit slow to load but ill have to try and tidy the comp up a wee bit to see if it gets faster.

also thanks for the links, they will be of great use.

thank you very much for all your help, your a star!!

Happy Easter
