The Dear? Man really messed up my computer! I thought that all I had to do is ban the teens from it! Anyway, please help!

I ran, multiple times, adaware, SBSD, and my Symantec Antivirus. After much time scanning, rebooting, deleting (probably not successfully) a program called MS Antrivirus 2009. There was something called MSAS 2009.exe too. There are constant warnings of a security problem (not symantec's) IE will open on it's own and things start downloading. I also keep getting a message saying there is a "Runtime" error and do I want to debug.

Please, please help soon. I have to leave on a trip Wednesday morning and need this computer to be safe by then. Below is my HJT log.

I was afraid to do a ERUNT thing because the computer is so messed up right now. Should I anyway? I still have it on my desktop from the last time you helped me (sorry to be back) :red:

Thanks in advance for your efforts.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I was afraid to do a ERUNT thing because the computer is so messed up right now. Should I anyway?

This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it.

Please review the "Before you Post" instructions again, you missed at least the instructions to disable TeaTimer.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Hello pskelley. Thank you for your response and help. Your message came after I had left on my trip so I hope we are still able to go to work on this after all this time?

Before I left I did do the ERUNT and shut down tea timer. Your other requests are posted below.

In the first post, I forgot to mention that my computer now "talks" to me. It has never done so before. Every once in a while a voice comes out of the blue "Congratulations. You have won." I do not know if this is some kind of message from the AHs who developed the virus/trojans or what. I hate that voice!

I did reboot after the Malwarebytes scan. IE is still opening on it's own and trying to download something.

Thanks,
Sherrie

This can be done as time permits, but it is important, and may be why you are infected.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php

Mozilla Firefox (3.0.6) <<< needs a security update to (3.0.8)

How is the computer running now, from the information I am seeing this is the only questions I have:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userload.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.

Was MBAM able to remove that trojan on reboot? We will update and run again to be sure, but I need feedback from you about performance.

Let's do some cleaning also:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Thanks

Sherrie

Thank you pskelley. You asked how the computer is running. I think a little faster but IE is still trying to open on it's own and I hear the computer constantly working. The security warnings are still popping up but the red ball with the white x is gone from my lower menu bar. Things are still not right. I am guessing that MBAM did not remove the trojan you asked about?

I am most certainly interested in this tool. Should I download and use it now? I am afraid you lost me and I do not know what "PSI" is and how to run in from All Programs. I have my MS Auto Updates turned off but do go to the website once or twice a week to do them. I have not done one since I first posted. Should I do one now?

Do you want me to do the other updates before downloading and using the ATF Cleaner?

I forgot to mention that I am not getting any emails to let me know you have responded to my posts. Is that still being done and I'm just not getting them?

Sorry...you are asking questions faster than I can answer them:sad: I will get to them all before we finish. Since you are still having issues, let's run combofix now. Please read and follow the directions carefully.

Watch for a private message.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed

A Private Message was sent to the address you used when you joined this forum? You should check to be sure your spam filters are not sending them to your junk mail.

I see Mountpoints, are you using a USB or Flash drive that may be infected. I see combofix repaired a infected userinit.exe
Infected copy of c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe was found and disinfected
and removed other junk as you can see under "Other Deletions", how is the computer running now?

Thanks

Sherrie, when you click on the link to your thread:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=47479 <<< here
On the top line just above your name look for "Thread Tools" and click it.
Click on "Subscribe to the Thread" then Add Subscription when prompted.

Since we are running additional tools, please wait until we clean this malware before you use Secunia PSI.

Thanks...Phil

:bigthumb: Hello Phil,
No more security warnings or IE attempts to open on more than 1 1/2 hours and counting!! Yippee! So nice! Thank you for your time and efforts. The constant chatterining of the computer is quieted now too.

I still have not received the private post and it is not in my spam file. The last time I had a problem this forum helped me with the emails came through just fine. The last one was Feb. 2nd. I keep checking the forum to see if you have responded. I see you have posted a quote from the private message but, of course, it is difficult to know what you would like me to do without reading the rest of it. I did the subscription thing but will wait for further information about the Secunia PSI.

Okay, I don't know what Mountpoints is but I do use Flash drives and probably USBs. ;) Gotta be gentle with me. I am a self taught grandma type who is learning as she goes. :red: Maybe a dumb question..... How can a device like a flash drive or maybe the DVD burner/player pluged into USBs be infected? Can things stored on Flash Drives be infected and reinfect my computer?

Since the computer is running so much better now I did do an update on the Adobe Flash Player (whatever that does) and Firefox. I will move on to the Java suggestion next and should I run the ATF Cleaner now too?

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Odd... this was supposed to show up as a quote as the last time I did it but when clicking the button for it "
{/QUOTE]" shows up and it ended up as you see in the last email. Is this a glitch we should be concerned about?

Morning Sherrie, can't help with the forum software. I suggest you contact Support: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/support/index.html
and ask them to look at those issues with notifications, private messages, etc.

As far as the Private Message, the quote was the complete message with instructions for making sure your Subscription for Notifications is set.

I don't know what Mountpoints is but I do use Flash drives and probably USBs.
Mountpoint are created when you install files via USB ports using any removable media (USB Memory stick, Flash drive, etc.) If any file is infected, then the computer may also get infected. This is especially true with Conflicker, this is one method the worm uses to spread.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=infected+Flash+drive&btnG=Search

If you are using USB drive (also know as "Pen Drive" or Flash Drive") use this information to reformat them.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/231100/Reformatting-a-USB-Drive
Any file can get infected, some file infectors are worse then others and spread to many, many files (like Virut)

Let's remove all mountpoint in case anything is infected.

should I run the ATF Cleaner now too?
Yes

Let's do this now:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{4318e2d4-0356-11de-a8d9-001111ce353f}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{5b4436c2-13db-11de-a8e5-001111ce353f}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{91ee6ee1-844b-11dd-a8a0-001111ce353f}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{91ee6ee3-844b-11dd-a8a0-001111ce353f}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{e277f841-d073-11dd-a8b5-001111ce353f}]

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This may start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot) I do not need to see that combofix log this time.

Let's continue and see if we can wrap up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update Symantec AntiVirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Hello pskelley,
Things are working so much better now! I ran the MBAM and my AV scans again and all seems clean. Ran ATF Cleaner and removed combofix too. Followed the restore instructions. Have read some of the information in the links that you provided and will continue to read and learn from them. They are so helpful. Thank you for providing them.

In reading back through our posts, I see that the only thing not accomplished is the Java Update. I had problems with that and will try again. This leads back to the Secunia PSI subject. Should I follow that link to download a tool now? Also, should I turn the tea timer thing back on in Spybot?

Thanks ever so much,
Sherrie

Thanks for the feedback.

Java: You should be able to update Java like this:
Start > Control Panel > Java (small coffee cup) Update tab > Update Now and follow the prompts.

Secunia PSI: The program will help you keep programs up to date and I find that handy to have myself. As I said earlier, I do not run PSI, but turn it off in MSConfig (uncheck)
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
then I update PSI once a month for a check at the same time I update Windows and any other programs. It can be run all of the time to constantly monitor for updates, but that does use a few resources.

TeaTimer: Read the links from experts, then turn it on if you wish to run it. Here is some Spybot S&D information:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

Hello pskelley,
The computer is still running well. Using the PSI tool and your instructions for Java all is now updated.

A couple of things concern me and perhaps you can reassure me that they are not to be concerned about?

1. When figuring out the MSCONFIG setting for the PSI I took a look at what else to eliminate from start up and found this: ctfmon C:WINDOWS|system.... HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer

I was curious about it and went to the following link for information.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=&letter=C

They showed the following information.

Name or Startup Item Status Command or Data D
autoload X cftmon.exe Detected by Symantec as the
SILLYFDC WORM! See here

Is the same as the item on my startup? Should I be concerned?

2. When rebooting after a couple of updates a warning from Symantec came up that auto update is off (intentionally) and Symantec AV was off. The AV was not supposed to be off and when I checked it did not appear to be. What do you think?

In all other way the computer seem to be working well with the exception of one "cannot open" from IE when I tried to open the spybot forums website.

Please forgive me if I am being paranoid here. I just want to be sure all is clear before signing off as clean. I shall await your expert oppinion.

Sherrie

1) You have to remember hackers can call their junk what they want and do. The will often hide behide a valid name to make identification more difficult. Some methods we use:

Google: http://www.google.com/
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/cftmon/

You can also look at the file: cftmon.exe
Description: cftmon.exe is a part of the Microsoft Office suite and handles speech input for this product
%system%\cftmon.exe
<<< so if you look in the System32 folder you will find the file and then right click and look at properties to see it is a Microsoft file. I do not have the file since I do not have Microsoft Office.
If it is malware, it will almost always be located elsewhere.

Third, you can always use a free online scanner:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
To check a suspicious file to find out what it is. Give it a try on that file to see what I mean.

2) "What do you think?"
I think I don't use Symantec and that would be a question for their technical people (what you pay them for)
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

3) "In all other way the computer seem to be working well with the exception of one "cannot open" from IE when I tried to open the spybot forums website."
Not enough information to even guess, any error message? Have a look at this information:

Thank you again for all this helpful information. So much to learn!

My mind is relieved, for now. If the Symantec message shows again I will contact them. I will not worry about the IE message unless it shows regularly.

You asked:

I have avoided the SP3 because I had heard, a while back now, that many had problems after or during loading it. I am kind of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" sort and SP3 is the "unknown" that I am avoiding. Kind of like moving on from AOL, which is all I have known for many years. It takes me a lot of time to learn new ways.

I will read up on the link you provided and if you think SP3 is a good thing to do now I will upgrade.

So I guess we are done here? You folks rock! Thanks again.
