View Full Version : Help please! Cannot turn on system restore. Log posted.

Hey all,

I had a pretty bad infection about a month ago that I thought I took care of, but today my computer has been acting up. My taskbar notifies me that automatic updates for windows are off. When I try to turn them on, I get an error saying that the security center cannot change the automatic update settings.

If I manually go to the windows update site through internet explorer, I get the following error:

The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.

If I try to do step 5, a window titled "Services" pops up and it says "Access is denied."

Step 7 yields the following error: "Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

The "Event Log" of step 10 is already on Automatic.

It appears my boot.ini is messed up as I can't get into safemode by going through msconfig.


I first became aware of a problem when my AVG antivirus resident shield popped up with a few viruses that it caught upon them loading:

SuperAntiSpyware picks up nothing.

I was ready to give up and do a clean install of Windows XP, but when I boot to the CD it says it can't find the hard drive. So basically I can't even reinstall windows!

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, there are no excuses for not following the directions.

Sound like you have a load of problems and mosty likely are still infected. I have no idea if I can help or not and because you did not read the directions, you missed important instructions, including this one:

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

If you have not resolved these issues, start with this:

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing.
