Hello Again; I got this from 'Digg'. It put a small icon on the lower right tool bar. A small red button with a white X. It opens small dialog windows that tell me I have or may have (different windows) infections and when I close the windows it opens the internet to their website and starts a scan. If I ignore the little windows it just opens more. I have done all I know how to do and so here I am. Please Help? Thanks, Harold.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Before we start, information for you.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, there are no excuses for not following the directions.

This junk is not showing in the HJT log and it may take some time to locate and remove it, so do not expect easy or fast. If you can work with those facts, then we will proceed like this:

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Secunia PSI <<< I am surprised you have those out of date programs when you have PSI on board? Is it up to date and being used?

I would like a look at a Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) Kaspersky depends on Java to run, please be sure you get that old Java program off the computer before running KOS.

Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post

Hi Phil; Thanks again for your help. The reason the log shows 'no action taken' is that I was unable to find the log after taking action. I gave up after 2 tries and just sent the 3rd log unrepaired. I 'took action' after saving the log. The problem comes back every time.
I have done everything except the KOS report. The link you gave will not work for me, it shows a '404 ERROR'. I found the Kaspersky site and attempted to download the KOS there but it says the Java aplet was not loading and ask me to download the scanner online. I uninstalled and reinstalled Java again and the KOS still will not work. I just can't see what I am doing wrong. Can you help me with this?

The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Did you make sure to uninsall that old version of Java before running Kaspersky:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01 <<< VERY old version, uninstall it.

Try it again after you have only one updated Java program, you can check to be sure it is updated here:

Hi Phil; Things are not going well here.
The newest mbam log file is dated Feb of 09.

My Java version is ' V6 update 13, build 1.6.0_13-b03'

KOS says "starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program"

I went to 'javatester' and the pink window failed (no pink and no text).

I have, update, & run mbam, spybot, & ad-aware everyday. Here is a new HJT log. Iknow I have missed something, Please, help me. Thanks, Harold

The newest mbam log file is dated Feb of 09.
Don't understand how that can be. Forget about Kaspersky Online Scan, here is what I would like you to do.

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Locate Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and uninstall it from the computer. This will remove all old logs, and any old quarantined items. Now I would like you to restart the computer and then follow these directions VERY CAREFULLY. Read them a couple of time before you start so you will know exactly what you are doing.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Post the scan results and tell me how the computer is running.

Mbam is scanning as I type, BUT, I thought you should know that I printed your instructions and followed them and mbam still shows the old logs and quarantined stuff. I even looked to make sure that it was gone from the program files before I downloaded the new one. Later, Harold

Harold, that's hard to believe, but since you are there and not me, I will have to take your word for it. If you open MBAM and look at the top you will see Logs. Click that tab and "Remove All" of the old Logs, then click the Quarantine tab and "Delete All" of the junk in there.

Hi Phil; O.K., This is the way it works for (or to) me. Following the printed instructions all went well until I clicked 'remove selected' and no log appeared. I am sorry I did not write down the name of the problem. I looked around and pushed a tab that I never have before. The settings tab and there was an unchecked box, yea, the save log box was unchecked. I swear Phil, I did not and would not uncheck that or any box without being told. These are the tools that stand between me and the bad guys and I don't know enough about them to be playing around. The scan is running again. I am confident that the problem will be there, it always is. Scan takes 3 hours, I'll get back to you tonight. If you want me to do something different just post it, I'll check back. If you are talking about MBAM, it take about one hour on my computer. You may have more files than me but that much time usually indicates hard drive damage or excessive fragmentation. When was the last time you did maintenance on the hard drive?

Sorry about not referencing MBAM, I will remember to do so. MBAM complete scan always takes well over 2 hours, maybe because I keep useing the computer while it is running.

I have 2 - 250 gb harddrives that are over half full most of the time. I dumped a bunch of stuff when this problem came up. The drives are defragged every day or two. The 3 malware programs are updated and run EVERY DAY or more (acording to what I am doing). McAfee scans once a week. I try to keep things updated, drivers and such.

Maintenance on the HD? Whats that?

The check for disc errors told me nothing, as in nothing wrong.

I know I act like I am the only person you are helping but I know better, sorry. The quick scan I refered to was MBAM and I will add the log from it with this post. I was thinking MBAM, were you not listening?

Infected copy of c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe was found and disinfected
Restored copy from - c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\userinit.exe

Hi Phil; Everything looks good. I left the computer running for a couple of hours and no problems came up. MBAM scan says all is well. I think you can close this Thread if you don't hear from me by morning.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)

Update McAfee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Phil; All seems to be well. I have spent some time on line and not one new window opened.

I have looked at all of the links you posted and put most in a new folder called 'repair items' and in the next few days I will go through each link and use what I can.

I spend a lot of time on the computer and most of that online. I have been very lucky, so far, about getting hit with malware. Part of that luck is listening to people who know of what they speak.
