adultfriendfinder.com

Yeah it's an adult site. A site that has been in use by millions of people for nearly 10 years. Was logged in today. Ran Spybot then tried to access site and browser wouldn't even attempt to navigate to the site. Found that it was listed as a restricted site in IE 7 and removed it. Now when I type in the url it brings up a yahoo page saying the site doesn't exist. If I search for the site in google and click on the link there then it just says it can't navigate to the page. Turn off the spybot background resident and still no luck. Rebooting does nothing. Running Spybot immunization again says I have one uprotected threat which I assume is adultfriendfinder.com not being listed in my retricted list anymore under IE.

Yeah the site perhaps has questionable practices but I have never noticed any spyware out of them and I've been on the site for nearly 5years.
If you want to block it that's fine but allow people to designate if they want to access a site they are fine with and ignore any more attempts by Spybot to restrict access.

I ran into the same problem with AFF being blocked. When I ran Spybot, it showed as a bad url. I couldn't access the site from either IE 8 or Firefox 3

This is url it showed (I've removed the obvious so nobody tries to click on it)

adultfriendfinder dot com/Win32.Agent.Ita

If the site's been hacked, I'd just as soon wait until they fix it. I've had the access problem for about 48 hours or so.

Don't think the site has been hijacked. I was on the site earlier and then decided to run spybot cause I hadn't in about 2 weeks. Suddenly no access. Since they use multiple names to access the same place, I've been able to login but not using adultfriendfinder url.

What annoys me is removing the url from the restricted sites list does nothing. Removing the registry entries showing the site as blocked does nothing.

Oh and I didn't notice listed in the scan showing AFF was a bad site. I just ran the immunization and they added the site to the restricted list.

If you don't use the AFF url, how do you login? LOL

I think I found the solution. You have to edit your hosts file. I disabled the AFF entries that Spybot added and that seems to have fixed the problem. :)

Well that's a work around but not a solution. I'm guessing anytime I let Spybot immunize/scan, it's going to reban the site. It does work though. Thanks for figuring it out.

Hmm...not really a fix I'm finding out. While I can access the site at the main url, I can't do anything inside the side that pops into another window. Clicking on the links do absolutely nothing. Still works fine under the not blacklisted url but not under the AFF one.

Any update to this from the staff?

Any way to at least allow people who want to access the site the ability to do so without completely removing Spybot?

I work for Friend Finder Networks the owner of adultfriendfinder.com. We have had dozens of complaints from customers that the 4/8/2009 update blocks adultfriendfinder.com.

(Yes, we are an adult site but we do have 32 million members worldwide)

I would also like to report that the latest immunization has added another Friend Finder Networks site, Cams.com, as a blacklisted site.

The SDHelper.log file shows the following entries:

Blocked HTTP://WWW.ADULTFRIENDFINDER.COM/: Win32.Agent.lta (Blacklisted URL)
Blocked HTTP://WWW.CAMS.COM/: Win32.Agent.lta (Blacklisted URL)

I am shocked to see someone whom clearly is representing Spybot Search & Destroy say something as stupid as "well it seems internet is for porn." Clearly this is a personal opinion and has no place being posted by a Spybot official; not to mention the implication that Adult FriendFinder is a porn site which is just flat out wrong. Just because something is Adult in nature doesn't make it porn, but thank you for sharing your unwanted narrow-minded viewpoint.

I for one would really like to hear WHY the sites AdultFriendFinder.com and Cams.com were blacklisted in the first place since neither site installs any spyware, adware or any other kind of software. Is Spybot changing from my favorite anti-spyware product to a useless anti-WhatYouThinkIsPorn piece of crap?

I am sorry, that was indeed unprofessional.
Adultfriendfinder is of course not a porn site, it is fare worse since it is pestering people with its advertising. This kind of advertising is however not always targeted, which means that it can be presented to anyone.
But this is not the reason why these sites were added to the black list.
The reason is more human: An error.

Thank you for your response Yodama. I would assume that, since there is admission of human error, Spybot will take the appropriate action to have adultfriendfinder.com and cams.com removed from their black list? If so, when can we expect the changes to take affect?

I would also add a note that the perception of these sites "pestering people with its advertising" is absolutely unfounded and seems to be more of a personal opinion than a fact. As with most websites, there are advertising banners which is not uncommon in the industry. You will find advertising on yahoo, myspace and facebook just to name a few. You will actually be hard pressed to find any social networking that does not use any advertisements on their site.

Again... Thank you for your assistance and looking into this matter.

Hello Yodama and Spybot team. I wanted to reiterate our thanks for looking into this matter and send my apologies for expressing my own personal opinions about advertising in my previous post.

Thanks for looking into it.

As far as the advertisements pestering people. Actually I'd probably agree with that. While I've never had anything harmful happen to my computer or be installed on my computer as a result of the friendfinder.com network, I'm not going to say they are innocent. While I don't experience a lot of popups from them as some people have complained of, the popups I have seen are sometimes just obnoxious and invasive. I have no love for the support staff there either that seem more interested in allowing scams than anything else.

I'd be completely happy if the site was blocked on Spybot as long as there was an option of unblocking sites that people still wanted to associate with. That way it would protect people who had no interest in the site and still allow others to visit if they wished.

I've found that (what I hope is) a temporary workaround is to simply "undo" Spybot's immunization. This will allow access to these "erroneously" blocked sites. Hopefully, in the very near term, an update addressing this admitted faux pas will be released and one can then reimmunize the system.

My two cents worth on what seems to have triggered this:

While popups and advertisements are a) annoying, b) resource consuming (especially if you're relegated to dialup access, as I am) and c) in some cases in some people's minds cross the line from commerce to malice, they also do not in my mind in and of themselves fit the mainstream definition of malware. Advertising can be found in virtually every human culture with any degree of sophistication and has ultimately footed the bills (i.e. - made it possible) for a great many otherwise tenuous human endeavors. While I doubt AFF will be recorded in posterity as a great human undertaking, nonetheless it obviously is providing a desired service to a great many people (of whom I am one). If their ads are obtrusive, as consumers we have choices: live with it, block the particular content (my own personal favorite) or just cease to use the site altogether.

Put another way, I agree with this...:

I'd be completely happy if the site was blocked on Spybot as long as there was an option of unblocking sites that people still wanted to associate with. That way it would protect people who had no interest in the site and still allow others to visit if they wished.

I found a work around to go back on cams.com and adultfriendfinder.com

go to this site http://substitutesite.com/ Edit: Not recommended.

and what it is it's a search engine that lets you come in blocked sites and then there after it works normally again like it used too.

Hello shadowsfall 26,

The link you provided took me to a page of advertisements, Firefox blocked a popup.

When I allowed that popup Web Of Trust (WOT) blocked munky.com.

This site has a poor reputation.
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/munky.com

A second look at the link in a new window. After Be aware that when allowing popups and refreshing the page substitutesite.com redirected to munky.com.

Regards.

I understand that there was a human error made. I have three questions.
1.) Will the error be fixed?
2.) If the error is going to be fixed Is there an estimated completion time?
3.) Is there something that we can do using the Advanced mode of Spybot to make it possible to go to AFF again until the problem is/isn't fixed?

Thanks

I am personnally adding site to my host file since numerous years. I always add them before the "# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy" marker.

Since april 2009, Spybot is removing one of my own entry  "www.adultfriendfinder.com" .

I hate that Spybot alter my own entries. I do not want to download the pesty adultfriendfinder adds and Spybot should not remove MY setting.

I did never alter any entry between the "Spybot" markers. It should never alter entries outside of his own markers.

@GastX
sorry about that, the domain adultfriendfinder.com was put to undo because we added it to be blocked in 2009. I will set the domain to be inactive for Spybot S&D so it will not be removed from the hosts file in the future anymore.
This will be public with the next detection update scheduled for Wednesday 2010-07-14

@medic2214
Spybot S&D does not block the site adultfriendfinder since 2009-04-15.
The latest update also removes blocking of the adultfriendfinder cookie.

If you have any trouble in accessing adultfriendfinder it has nothing to do with Spybot S&D blocking adultfriendfinder.
