View Full Version : Spybot not starting, search engines redirected, scanners not working

Hi,

This is my first post so heres an introduction. I try to keep my laptop clean at all times and I know what tools to use, but not this time. I went to search for a video codec yesterday since the one I was using was quite choppy. Bad move on my part, because since then,

- search engines get redirected in Firefox (typing this in IE9)
- spybot doesn't start, but the process keeps running
- Panda online scan only scans ~8000 files and says the pc's clean
- Norton 2009 trial scans only ~5000 files (full scan) listing no malwares/etc

I tried Malwarebytes (had to rename the exe) but it couldn't find anything. The OS also hangs from time to time at bootup, no mouse clicks register, no keys either. While this happens, taskmanager doesn't open, so the only thing I could do is a hard boot and hope for the best. Booting into safemode doesn't really help, since the same # of files are scanned in Norton 2009 and spybot doesn't run. I ran out of ideas so I came here looking for help, as I need my laptop to study for upcoming finals.

Included is my HJT log.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, there are no excuses for not following the directions.

85.255.112.107 <<< hacked by criminals from the Ukraine:
http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.112.107

and not doubt there is more malware not showing. You have the option to reformat, keep in mind cleaning the junk will not be fast or easy. If you wish to continue, this is how we will start, follow all directions carefully.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

3) I need the results of a MBAM scan, if you still have MBAM, make sure you update before you run it.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
(Database version: 1994 4/17/2009) <<< today
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

Recap: post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the report from MBAM, a new HJT log and the uninstall list.

Thanks

I've had Bitdefender 2009 trial installed for the time being, it didn't catch anything suspicious except the usual tracking cookies. I also found out why S&D didn't run, the exe didn't seem to be in the folder while it was installed, but appeared when I did an uninstall. I copied it the exe and did another install, pasted it back, and had to rename it to get it to run. Found tracking cookies only.

I received no noticication when you posted, sorry for the forum software:sad:

Remove (delete) Smitfraudfix from the computer, we are finished with that tool.

Post only in black, the colors are harder for me to see.

Fact: The items indicating the Ukrainian hacker that were in the first HJT log are not showing in the second HJT log. This means either you used another tool to remove the items or they were removed by MBAM and you did not post the MBAM log showing that. The log you posted for MBAM is clean.

Uninstall List:
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 <<< uninstall all old versions

Mozilla Firefox (3.0) <<< out of date
Help > Check for Updates > Download and install.

Please let me know if you are having malware issues.

Thanks

Hey,

Thanks for the help pskelley. I decided to reformat my computer since I'm finished with my exams. I always wanted to partition the drives differently anyways.

Sorry I didn't go through and try to fix the computer till the end and wasted your effort :red:
