Hi this thread/log originates from a previous thread: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=47600

It concerns the entries:
(SBI $724750D4) Program Directory
C:\ProgramFiles\FunWebProducts\ScreenSaver

(SBI $B71E4FFD) Program Directory
C:\ProgramFiles\FunWebProducts

(SBI $B71E4FFD) Program Directory
C:\ProgramFiles\funWebProducts (NB notice lower case f !)

which despite being no more than a few empty folders, Spybot cannot fix even when TeaTimer is disabled and safe mode is run.

So I followed the prelimanary instructions, backing up the registry with ERUNT.
Here is my HJT log:

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to a convenient location.
Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked): Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Checked (ticked) all items except items in the System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d165/ndmmxiaomayi/mayi/mbam1.png

After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

2 - download and run RSIT

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

Dear Peku,

Many thanks for your comprehansive reply.

Please note:
1) On installing Malwarebytes anti-malware I also got a Spyware Doctor message saying Malwarebyes Anti malware was trying to register itself in the Windows Startup folder.
I understood this was probably nothing but clicked "quarantine".
The software would then not install properly, so I uninstalled and re-installed allowing this action and successfully installed and ran it.

May I ask, why does it need to run at statup ?
Can I remove it from my startup programs using "Configuration Manager" ?

2) Multiple "System Volume Information" items found and unchecked by me.
3) After the selected problems were fixed spyware doctor then popped
up saying a medium threat trojan risk had been blocked.

According to Spyware doctors "Activity history" it was this:

Threat Name: Trojan-PWS.Bancos.PWN
Details - Spyware Doctor blocked an application attempting to write to the registry.
Risk Level - Medium
Infection - HKLM\SYSTEM|CONTROLSETUP001\SEVICES\XIXUMP

Forgive me but what the hell is a trojan doing with this anti-malware application ?!! (not that I totally trust spyware doctor)

Anyway here's the Malwarebytes log:

Just wondering why the thread says "Peku" made the last reply, when I have already replied.....
Sorry for bumping but don't want you to think I haven't replied......

Hi mariner77

1) It is not necessary to run at statup, you can use "Configuration Manager"
2) I give you later instructions how to empty it.
3) as I said earlier "Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe." :)
but "HKLM\SYSTEM|CONTROLSETUP001\SEVICES\XIXUMP" does not belong to Malwarebytes anti-malware

Logs look good.
We will run one online scan to be sure that there is nothing left.

1 - Clean temp files

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Kaspersky online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log
How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Thanks peku006

Hi peku,

Thanks for your reply.

I'll be doing the things you said tomorrow but just wanted to ask a couple of questions in the meantime as you said "If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask."

Q1.
When you said "2) I give you later instructions how to empty it.", did you do that in your last post or will you be doing that later once I've done the latest steps you suggested ?

Q2.
You said ""HKLM\SYSTEM|CONTROLSETUP001\SEVICES\XIXUMP" does not belong to Malwarebytes anti-malware.

Now I got it straight after fixing the errors with Malwarebytes Anti-malware....
If I've a trojan in my registry(?), is this another problem I've got, and if so will this be cleared up by any of the anti-malware programs I'm going to run ?
Or is it difficult to tell without doing a separate analysis ?

Many thanks, I'll be doing the steps you suggested and posting back in about 12-16 hours time....

Hi mariner77

Q1. I will give instructions, after the machine is clean
Q2. There is not any trojan in your registry......Spyware Doctor made a mistake (again) read this Trojan-PWS.Bancos.PWN (http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=ace44cca6114f4d8906e21a388a70a3f)

Hi mariner77
Logs look good. How's the computer running now? Any problems?

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZRxdm795YYGB

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi there peku,

Many thanks again for your help.

Yep - removed the two entries you pointed to and looks like they've been deleted ok, though I'll leave it to the expert to check ! ;)

Here's the HJT log after attempting to fixing them:

May I ask, were those two entries I fixed/deleted related to the "FunWebProducts" entries ?

The computer seems fine thanks. I must admit I didn't notice too much of a problem before, but it does seem a little bit faster now.
I was mainly worried about these hidden "FunWebProducts" rootkits and thanks to your help, I'm glad to say they seem to have gone(I've also just done a Spybot S&D scan too and they don't show).

Just a final few questions if I may ?
(please do tell me to post in the Spybot S&D forum if you are busy.....)

1)
You know before we found a lot of "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{...." entries that we did not remove ?
I have noticed recently I was having trouble using Windows "system restore" function (in a desperate attempt to go back to a "clean" system.)
Is it possible these entries we found before(that I unchecked) were causing this problem of not being able to restore to old restore points ?
I notice the first "C:\System Volume Information\_restore" entry comes from a vendor named "AdWare.FunWeb".....
Out of interest, why do we not fix these "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{...." entries ? (I still have 26 of them !)

2)
If I tried now to restore the computer to an earlier time(!:red:!) would that effectively undo all the fixes we have just made, or is the existence of malware separate from system restore ?
Please don't worry - I certainly don't want to undo a clean and working system and I am not considering doing any restore(to test) unless 100% safe to do so.

I suppose I am just thinking
a) for the future - if i have trouble restoring again. (this may be a separate issue though ?)
b) if it possible to simply restore back to a "clean" point(like now) in the future if I hit similar malware problems ?

Many thanks again for all your help peku.

Kind regards,
mariner77.

Hi mariner77
The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :yahoo:

1) I give you instructions (here and now) how to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

2) yes it would undo all the fixes we have just made, and the computer would be infected again

if you still have problems with the system restore, read this

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html)

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Delete RSIT from your desktop, also delete this folder C:\rsit.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

Install MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Hi peku,

All done, fantastic ! :)

I cleared the old restore points, created 2 new ones.
I restored back to the very first one no problem.

I really love the way you are specific and leave nothing to chance in your instructions.
Even an idiot like me can understand it !

Thanks too for all the other useful tips and info. It doesn't get ny better than this....

Some I've done and seen already(errr SINCE being infected...) but some are new to me.
I will check them all out for sure so I hope this doesn't happen again......

Out of interest, do you not recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware ?
I like it a lot....
Is it because a full version it is not free ?

Many thanks for all you help, I really appreciate it.

Hi mariner77

of course I recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware :D:
I left MalwareBytesAntiMalware on your computer. It is a good program to have and to run every few weeks just to be sure that you are still clean.
but remember, it is not a good idea to run more than one real-time anti-spyware shield. Using real-time protection from two or more anti-spyware applications may cause conflicts.
(there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning)

Ah very interesting, I never knew that.

Well, thanks ever so much again peku.

For your sake I hope the amount of malware problems on the forum eases off slightly......

Kind regards & take care,

Dear peku,

I feel guilty to ask you again as I know you're so busy, so please do tell me to raise these questions in the Spybot S&D forum if you so wish(no problem I promise.....)

May I ask one more thing ?

You said before :- "it is not a good idea to run more than one real-time anti-spyware shield. Using real-time protection from two or more anti-spyware applications may cause conflicts."

To be clear, is Spybot S&D real time protection ? I see it has Resident "SDHelper" and Resident "TeaTimer".

Why I ask is that my friend wants spyware doctor('s "On Guard" protection) to be running(in my view not so great) and thinks this means therefore that he
a) can't have Spybot S&D running in the background.
b) doesn't need to use the immunization feature on Spybot S&D if he uses it on Spyware Doctor.

Is it necessary to have Spyware Doctor running if Spybot S&D is running in the background (or vice versa) ?

I also notice the "immunization" function is a subset of real time protection for both applications ?

Surely this doesn't mean though that if the immunization is performed with Spyware Doctor that there is no need to immunize using Spybot S&D ?

When you say "may cause conflicts", do you mean similar to the problem we had before when Spyware Doctor got it wrong and flagged the trojan ?
Or do you mean if 2 real time protection apps are running then it may cause threats to be missed or not fixed/protected against ?

Finally, do different real time protection functions guard against different threats ? Surely they can't work in exactly the same way and both will miss things the other doesn't ?
I wondered if having both running might give more protection, and even if it did raise conflicts, then he could manually override them ?
Or is this totally wrong ? :fear:

Personally I would always go with Spybot S&D and ditch Spyware Doctor but wondered if it is safe and beneficial to have them both running at the same time.....

Many thanks again peku, much appreciated.

Hi mariner77

To be clear, is Spybot S&D real time protection ? I see it has Resident "SDHelper" and Resident "TeaTimer".
There are four levels of protection currently offered by Spybot S&D.
This (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=281)is a helpful topic by md usa spybot fan.How Spybot-S&D protects against the installation of Spyware/Malware.

"may cause conflicts" means system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other

There are many different types of spyware ,not all programs catch the same spyware files or offer the same protective options.

I do not think that there is no greater benefit, although both running at the same time
I use the Spybot S&D and SpyWare Blaster together with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (all are free programs)and my computer has never been infected

Yes I've seen this article before - it's very good.
Just wasm't sure if this was real time protection or not - I guess it must be.

I can not say anything about Spyware Doctor because I have never used the

All I really know is it offers onGuard real time protection.....

"may cause conflicts" means system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other

Thanks.

Yep.

I do not think that there is no greater benefit, although both running at the same time

Sorry - can you explain ?

I use the Spybot S&D and SpyWare Blaster together with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (all are free programs)and my computer has never been infected

Fair enough - I will do the same and persuade my friend to.....

I am slightly confused however.
Is Spyware blaster real time protection ?

If Spyware Blaster offers real time protection and Spybot S&D does too then isn't there a possible conflict ?
Or is the protection of each mutually exclusive of each other ?

I notice spyware Blaster does not sit in the bottom right running as a program.
It seems that you need to load it up to protect yourself, but cannot close the screen and leave running in the background....

Maybe this is not important, but spyware doctor is "On Guard" in real time and sits running to protect against threats (like Teatimer and resident Shield?)

Please forgive my lack of knowledge about the subject - I will endevour to learn all I can once the thread ends.....

Many thanks again peku. :)

Hi mariner77

you have a lot of (difficult) questions

I wondered if having both running might give more protection, and even if it did raise conflicts, then he could manually override them ?
Sure you can have both at the same time, many users have both Spybot S&D and Spyware Doctor but remember ,your machine is not "two times better" protected....
all depends on how and where computers are used............

If Spyware Blaster offers real time protection and Spybot S&D does too then isn't there a possible conflict ?

Those are two different programs

SpyBot Search & Destroy is a scanner/remover for spyware, and it has a real-time protection feature called TeaTimer. You can set TT to run in the background and if it detects spyware-like activity it will alert you and give you chance to stop the suspicious process before it does any harm. In that respect, it's similar to an antivirus program.

SpywareBlaster blocks the installation of most ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers and other unwanted programs from the user's computer. SpywareBlaster works by blacklisting the CLSID of known malware programs, effectively preventing them from infecting a protected computer. This approach differs from many other anti-spyware programs, which typically offer the user a possibility to "scan" the memory of the computer and remove the unwanted software, after it has been installed.

I think you're right about me peku.... :red:

Many thanks for the information - that is most helpful.

Actually one of the features of Spyware doctor's real time on guard protection is to block the user browsing certain web pages with the message "Spyware Doctor has prevented you viewing a page suspected of harmful content".

Unfortunately for myself it does not matter which web page I visit - I always get the error message !
And no help from their "support team" either.....
What a bunch of **** ! :D:

Many thanks for all your help peku, I will now embark on a self-learning curve.

Take care & thanks again,
mariner77.
