VirtuaMonde? lsass.exe error et al

Both of my computers were infected. The first one has been successfully cleaned up. This computer that I am posting from is the worse of the two.

It had Windows Live OneCare and Defender running on it and still got infected by the Vundo Trojan ( specifically showing VirtuaMonde ). This system is seeming to get worse and worse as a lsass.exe comes up everytime I restart the computer and clicking any options will start a forced shutdown of my system.

Also, I have these "programs" trying to set themselves up as a startup process ( every 5 minutes or so )

I cannot install Avast! 4 Home edition as I think the trojan is displaying back a "Page Cannot be displayed error" on Avast's Site ( which I know is up because my other computer can reach it ).

Right now I only have Windows Defender on my system as having both OneCare and Defender was bogging my resources down to 50% - 100%.

I have ran ERUNT, disabled TeaTimer and have read all of the "Read Before You Post"

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Oh boy! I don't really use this computer for much more then surfing, playing games and what not. So a re-format or re-install wouldn't be out of the question.


It would require a substantial more time in reinstalling and updating all the programs I do use though. But backing up the documents and pictures would not be to terribly hard.



However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

I can get any files over from my clean computer to my infected one via CDs so if the clean up and programs can be run in an off-line mode then I could do that without accessing the internet. If we could move forward without connecting ( or limiting access ) to the internet that would be preferred.

If this can be done and the backdoor can be removed 100% of the way through removal then I would like to go with this option.

If it's not a 100% guarantee that once removed it will stay removed then will a re-format completely get rid of it? Or should I just consider my laptop a lost cause and send it to the junkyard?

The only information that would be bank logins and possibly credit card information. I think since infection I have NOT accessed my bank accounts online. I may have used my credit card since infected.

So any recommendations would be appreciated

I can't give you 100% guarantee of clean result with this type of infections. Reformat will remove the infection completely. You don't have to send the system to the junkyard cos of that.

Do you know if any certain types of files would be infected? Like word documents or pictures? Any file types I should consider "infected" and not copy over to a DVD?

Copying documents should be ok in your case. Music, videos and pics can be backuped too. Other file types I would leave.
