Hi, it's my first time posting on this forum so be gentle. ;P I've never experienced a problem with Spybot S&D before and it's always been a reliable and essential part of my battle with the evil spyware, but recently whenever I 'Check for problems' my PC shuts down about 1/3 of the way into the scan.

I was wondering whether anyone else was having this problem or if it is just me, in which case any help would be appreciated.

I always try to keep my system clean and I'm 90% sure that I don't have any spyware on my system (but the fact that my PC crashes 1/3 of the way into a Spybot S&D scan has me slightly suspicious).

Thanks, Joey.

Make sure that the fans are running and that dust is cleared from any ventilation ports in the case.
For desktops (See Caution! below):
Consider opening the case and checking to make sure the CPU heat sink is not dusty or loose.
For laptops (See Caution! below):
If your owner's manual tells you how to open the case, consider opening the case and checking to make sure the CPU heat sink is not dusty.

Before open the case on any PC make sure that you read the owner's manual for that specific PC. This is extremely important not only for your well being due to electrical hazards but also for your PCs well being due to the possibility of static electricity discharges that can damage your PC.

Hey from the UK!!

I had tried your workarounds and also 'bitmans' (that's what I think his name is anyway), with no success.

However, I tried your 'solution' regarding cleaning the heatsink, fans and ventilators, only with a can of compressed air, NOT THE BUTANE/PROPANE MIXTURE, and hey presto, it worked................ ;)

Can now run a full Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4 scan (2006-06-02) with no freezes, hanging, or anything!!

Well done md usa spybot fan.

Thank you............................................

Pinned. :)

On the other hand if you have ruled out CPU overheating as the cause of a particular crashing problem; please post giving details in the Spybot-S&D Forum.

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Certain malware infections can also be involved in security programs shutting down or being disabled.

Blowing out the dust in the intake and exhaust vents (using a rubber bulb as well as my own breath) did the trick (and there was quite a lot of the dust balls). My HP Pavilion notebook computer fans are running much more quietly now that 3-1/2 years of dust is cleared out. Thanks for the tip.

I'm having the same problem. But, my computer hangs anytime I use spybot, symantec or nerovision. Maybe more programs but those I'm sure of.

Ok everyone my knows uses spybot, so far I am not impressed. For whatever reason, and I rule out dustbunnies in my comp, spybot won't run through it's S & D cycle. Everytime I try, it runs about 15 minutes and then I get spybot error......blah blah and it shutdowns.
ideas why this would happen anyone?

Yes I too have the PC crash problem. If it helps any - Spybot runs through the list until 'feat.dll' - and then it's lights out and auto reboot time. It may be a programme incompatability conflict as I recently purchased a new PC and reloaded the same software-ran S&D-and got the same error. Before anyone asks - my both pcs are running cool and is spanky new and clean, and apart from reformatting, reloading everything one app at a time and then running S&D to isolate the possible cause - I don't know what to do. Adaware and NOD antivirus say all is well and I have no operational glitches otherwise - so I'd prefer not to do a reload. Any ideas?

just like jpmatt, i too have the very same problem. on running the scan for about a minute or so, my system reboots automatically.
any ideas on how to rectify this?

This comment is also raised on another thread
-----------------------------------------

I too have a problem with Spybot 1.4., running under XP2.

Until recently no problem, but now when Spybot is called (no other programs running) it fails to load and just hangs, preventing any other program from loading, including Task Manager. The "START/ Turn Off" option also fails to display after 2 or 3 other keybd/mouse actions are taken, and must repower.

I removed most Startup entires in MSConfig and discovered that if DUMeter v3.5 (a download rate meter from Hagel) was NOT loaded, then Spybot would run OK, even if all the other Startup entries were restored. So there appears to be a conflict between these 2 programs.

I took the advice offered on this thread to clean the heat sink of the PC processor, to ensure that it would not overheat. It was not dirty anyway , so no improvement in my case.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Hello,

Do you have selected to save the file on disk? Please don't choose to open the file as a download option because you cannot install it through the Internet.

The error seems to be transient in nature and other people seem to have been able to overcome the error by limiting the system resources used by other processes in the system.
In other words, run as little as possible while running the Spybot-S&D scan.

Some users have reported that they only had problems using the beta version but that the final version would work normally. Have you already tried the final version 1.4? (The reason why you don't see it in the integrated update is because we are still preparing an automatic upgrade process for the new version.) If you like, you can install it manually. Please uninstall the old version of Spybot-S&D before you install the new version:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html

Please don't forget to manually delete the "Updates" and "Includes" folders in the Spybot S&D program folder. You will find links to several download locations on our website. These mirrors are partners who provide places to host Spybot-S&D for us. You can download from one of them, it's secure: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Please search for new updates after installing Spybot-S&D 1.4.

Or are you using a computer with hyperthreading technology (Intel with HTT)? Spybot-S&D seems to have problems with this technology but we cannot confirm a general problem with HT technology because the software runs normally on our test systems.

One user has reported that turning off Norton Antivirus solved the problem. We are using Norton Antivirus, too, and haven't experienced any problems.

Best regards

I feel that this info needs to be in this sticky. :-)

* If your PC is RESTARTING During scanning...
that is.. it just restarts..no messages nothing.
* If your running Windows XP

The First thing to do,
is to STOP windows XP from restarting without telling you anything.

(1) Click START>
(2) Right-Click on MY Computer and Select Propertise.
(4) Go to the Advanced Tab
(5) Under Startup and Recovery section... Click the Settings Button.
(6) Under the System Failure section.. UNcheck automaticly restart.
(7) under write debugging information... small memory dump is fine for now.

O K Done...
now Instead of your windows XP just restarting and not telling you didly..
NOW You Will See a Blue Screen (aka: BSOD)
with some technical information for you to see.
and if your lucky.. the driver or file responsible for the crash will be listed.
If no faulty driver or file is listed. You need to read the website below for more help and information to find out what's causing the crash.
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2005/041105-windows-crash.html?page=1 Pages 1 - 4 .

* If you've NEVER seen the inside of your PC, then YES, the fans are probably coated with clogs of dust. If it's dirty..Restarting may frequently happen when doing anything.. and not just when scanning with spybot.
* Also MANY motherboards have BAD Capacitors...even new ones.
Look at the capacitors... are any swoll up on the top? is brown stuff on the top? That's a sure sign of a bad cap. Replace all bad caps...and the pc will work great. For more information on mother boards with bad caps...
Visit http://www.badcaps.net/forum/index.php Very helpfull site...
I've fixed two pc's with bad caps... now they work great... one would not even boot to the drive...then I knew it wasn't the drive... lol

If you've found this information helpfull..
Please send one dollar to bla bla bla.. I'm just kidding...LOL

SpyBot freezes on my machine after a minute or two as well. I can run scans by BitDefender, AdAware and XoftSpy without a problem and can do other things when SpyBot hangs.

Any clues as to the problem?

Same problem than redadare here. When running the analysis, it always freezes at the same point, when it reaches the point where it reads "(6029/64741: CoolWWWSearch)". This happens everytime even when not running any other program.

Having same problem. Started after I updated to 1.4. Thought it might have heated the first time, after I second time, I got suspicious. I ran a trendmicro scan and found malware which I cleaned. Now instead of crashing at about the 1/3 point it goes into standby and locks up. I think it's either the updated version or malware is stopping it. I did not uninstall before loading 1.4. Anyone think completely uninstalling and reinstalling might do the trick?

Travler- coolwwwsearch sounds like the coolweb malware. There is a removal tool at trendmirco.
http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/CWShredder/

I saw something similar to coolweb that did not belong in my start up and deleted myself. Later I ran the shredder above but it said it did not detect it. Wondering if I have remenants that the shredder does not now detect?

On one of my machines Spybot (1.4) just crashed at about 30% . No error message, nothing in the logfiles.

Some research revealed that this happened when scanning for DyFuCa.InternetOptimizer. So I decided to skip this threat by putting a mark in front of it (in Malware.sbi). Now Spybot runs successfully until the very end.

Note: I am 100% sure that there are no traces of DyFuCa.InternetOptimizer on my machine.

Allright - increasing the CPU fan to the maximum solves the problem. But I really wonder what΄s going on. I never ever had this problem before. (All I changed the last days was a new (better) power supply unit.) And of course not everyone has fan, which can be increased manually. So is this a kind of a bug???

My Bosses system hangs at vaious points during a scan. It is never the same spot. Sometimes it goes 1/3 of the way, the next time 1/2, another time it will go 75%, then another time back to 25%.

I have unloaded and reloaded the program numerous times and would like to know what is the problem here and why this keeps occurring.

Thank you,

I havent had this problem ever before.. have had spybot for years too!

Yes... read everything on the thread nothing applies to my situation.

I unistalled Spybot and reinstalled it (with all the updates) and ran it today.. worked fine! :bigthumb:

Wonder what's up with that?

I have yet to try Ad-Aware.. gonna do the same thing uninstall and reinstall
and see if it fixes the prob with it too.

My fans are running fine.. no overheating..
I have no other probs on my computer.. with any other application
and when I ran Spybot, it only found one bug on my computer..
and fixed it pronto.. was a CoolWeb thing.

I am now having no problems.... will let you know if it starts up again.

-JJT-
2007-07-13, 21:16
Yes! It absolutely worked for Ad-Aware too..

I uninstalled.. reinstalled and voila.. ran it with no shut down probs.
Ad-Aware found 4 bugs.. one insignificant and 3 attempted browser hijacks..

I believe it was one of the few found viruses that was messing with my system.
I had one last year that shut down my antivirus program.. was a mess!
My computer eventually crashed with that one. Had to take it in to get reset.

What a headache..

(hope I caught this one before it made another mess)..

Today.. after running my update.. I now AGAIN.. had the same problem with Spybot shutting down my computer during a scan. Up until today.. I didn't have that problem and have downloaded several updates via that time. I am still skeptical that it.. MIGHT be something in the the odd update that may cause this (?) due to it ALWAYS happening after the update (??) :red:

-JJT-
2007-08-02, 08:45
OK... so second time I ran my Spybot... I don't get a 'shut-down'.. but at not even one quarter of the scan being completed, it stops itself and gives me the message ! "User Abort! Scan was not completed successfully!"

I did not abort the scan.. nor did I touch any keys.

At present time - I CANNOT close the Spybot window by clicking on the "x" and will have to use the Windows Task Manager to close the program.

This gives me more reason to believe something happened during my update...

A complete uninstall of Spybot.. and a re-install corrected the problem. :bigthumb:

I installed Spybot and 40 seconds after it started scanning my monitor screen went black and the computer had to be re-started to get out of it. I un-installed it and re-installed it and it crashed again at the same point as before.

I wish someone would come up with a solution other than the overheating one. My late model HP desktop is in perfect condition inside and regularly has Acronis mirror image the HD using FireWire 800 with no heating problems and so it should be able to cope with more than a 40 second Spybot scan.

Hi! My first post here so my apologies for any etiquette violations.

After having run Spybot (v1.3 I think) without any issues, I have now had it kill two computers. The first time, it hung halfway through a scan after detecting a problem. I had to turn the computer off and when I went to restart it, it couldn't find the monitor at all. I even tried to boot off a W98 startup disk to the a: prompt and still nothing. I figured the video card died. No biggie.

However, the exact same thing just happened on a second computer. It hung after identifying a jraun problem - nothing worked, keyboard, mouse, ctrl alt delete. And on restart, I lost the monitor again. The hard drive is whirling away but doing what, I have no idea.

So I have no idea what happened and apparently I'll never know since I can't see what's going on.

datahunter,

I am using XP-Pro and had downloaded the correct program. However to be completely sure I again completely removed the installed one and did a fresh download and installation, but the program stalled my computer again. I had no other anti-spyware or virus program installed on this particular computer at the time. I have now un-installed it again and installed another anti-spyware program and I have had no further problems. I have never experienced another program on this computer causing it to stall and there is no doubt in my mind that the problem lies with spybot ... maybe an incompatibility with another program. I understand that it is a good program when it is working correctly and so I might give it another try in a few months time when the problem might have been sorted out.

Hi tashi!

I'm not able to check what version of Spybot I had installed since both computers were completely fried - the CPU probably got cooked. Yes, both were W98SE and they seemed happy with Spybot until I ran that last scan. They may have been about ready to die anyways and the fact that I was running Spybot a sheer coincidence but it happening on two computers has made me a bit gun shy about installing Spybot again.

Thanks for the links though. I'll have a look and if I have any useful insights, I'll drop back in here.

I had to completely uninstall Spybot... :red:

Seems it always went back to crashing my computer.. after updates (and the "overheating", or whatever it was that you suggested, is not the problem because I have no "crashing" with any other of the spy scanner programs that I have on this computer). The Ad-Aware only crashed the computer once.. and that was also after a Spybot update (and after I ran Spybot with a crash).

Since I have uninstalled Spybot there have been NO problems with my computer or any of the other programs I have on here for viruses or spyware. (I am running a program as I am doing this posting as a matter of fact).

I am very disappointed, as I have ran the Spybot for years with NO problems whatsoever.. and it seem that after an update a couple months ago.. I have had nothing but problems with the program shutting down my computer (ie completely turning the computer OFF along with some difficulty in actually starting it again immediately.. which was NOT a normal behavior for my computer (which by the way is only two years old).

I have recommended Spybot to many people within the past few years. I am hoping that these people have not had any problems with it recently.. (I am going to check with them).

Too bad I had to uninstall it. I relied on it for many years.

I had this problem with Spybot - the machine would rev up louder and louder until it crashed and rebooted.

Hello,

Why do you put this into this thread?
Has nothing to do with shut-down.?

Which version of Spybot do you run?
In case you are using a dated version of Spybot-S&D, as a first solution, please download the latest version Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.
This should fix the problem. You will find links to several download locations for this new version on our web site:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Please search for new updates after installing Spybot S&D 1.5.

If this doesn't help please delete the contents of your Windows temp folder.

You can also try the following:
- select "Settings" --> "Settings" in the navigation bar on the left and untick the checkbox in front of "display confirmation dialogs"
- exit Spybot-S&D so the settings are saved
- run Spybot-S&D and "Check for problems" again

Expect it to run slowly, it appears to hang. Please be patient - it should clear with the problems fixed.

If it still doesn't work please select "Settings" --> "Settings" from the toolbar on the left. In the section "Main settings" please untick the checkbox in front of "Create system restore point when fixing spyware/usage tracks".

I went round and round with this on my son's Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 running XP SP2 on a Celeron M processor until I searched for the offending file which was not found in the Windows Temp folder but in Local Settings under the normal Users profile. After closing as many applications as possible, try the following steps:

1. Open Windows Explorer (Right-click the "Start" button and select "Explore")

2. Click Tools - Folder Options - View - Hidden files and folders

3. Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked

4. Click "OK"

5. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<Place Your User Name Here>\Local Settings\Temp

6. Look for a file named "1af8A1.tmp_tobedeleted_tobedeleted" (It begins with an "L" not a one or an "I")

7. Highlight the file and depress the Del key

8. When it asks to verify the deletion depress Ctrl and click "Yes"

9. Rerun Spybot to verify that the problem does not reappear.

10. Restart your PC/laptop and then run Spybot once more to verify the files removal.

Hopefully this will work for others as well. Time will tell if this does resolve the issue but it's looking good at this point as the laptop has been restarted a couple of times and the issue has not returned. When through, be sure and go back to steps 1 and 2 making sure you click "Do not show hidden files and folders" and close Windows Explorer.

im sorry if this is already in the fourm
but im in a tight spot and i need a solution quick

im trying to install spybot
i select the language and randomly the intstaller will crash
sometimes after 5 seconds or even sooner

once in a while i will get to where i was actually installing it
but then it crashes

it only happens on spybotS&D
i was wondering if this was a virus' work
or if its just a user error

i've tried installing and using the last couple versions/updates of spybot and it has gotten to be nothing but worthless! either won't load, install, or just flat crashes on all of the computers i maintain.

have given up on this bloated, slow garbage and have switched to another program.

i can't believe there are 5 pages of posts on this matter and it's still a rampant issue!

Hi missmoondog58,

Just wondering what version of spybot are you using?

Do 1.5 updates work with 1.4? I downloaded 1.4 a while ago, and I just manually updated a few days ago. It seems to work just fine, but I just want to be sure.

I removed ver 1.4 and then installed 1.5. Big mistake. 1.5 won't run. It installs and looks ok. But it won't open. I click the icon, and I get the hourglass for a few seconds but then, nothing. I installed it twice. Downloaded it again and installed it again and I get the same thing.

Is there somewhere I can download 1.4 and go back to that? It worked great. You would think I'd learn. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

My machine got so infected so I tried installing some antispywares. Funny enough, Spybot seems to be blocked in the registry! This was a hellacious Vundo infection. Almost nothing was working, and Vundo even infected other EXEs, like SuperAntiSpyware and the Mousepad GUI software.

I think I found the registry entries, but even if I tried to open them the registry editor said there was an error. I was able to get Spybot installed but any time I try to update the definitions it fails and said the installer is corrupted. :lip:

Hello,

So why did you post here and did not open a new thread?

After Download do NOT select Open Folder. Select CLOSE. Then go offline. Go to the program downloaded and click twice. The Installation wizard will proceed with the Installation.

If this does not work please try at first another mirror.
You will find links to several download locations (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html) on our website.
These mirrors are partners who provide places to host Spybot-S&D for us.
You can download from one of them, it's secure and they all contain the same data.

As a second solution please try if the direct installation file (http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd15.exe) works.

If this does not solve the problem you might be infected by some spy- or malware and the installation of Spybot - Search & Destroy might be blocked. In this case please download our Runalyzer (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/runalyz.exe).
RunAlyzer is our brand-new autostart & configuration manager that allows you to view and edit all the spots where Windows looks for programs or services to start. It's a combination of a standard configuration manager and an advanced tool to locate and remove places where hijackers, spyware and other malware hide. You will find a short introduction (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=60) and more informations here.
Now you should be able to have a look if something bad has snooped into your system.

Also it would be nice to know the exactly file size (5037072 or 5037071 bytes or 4,8 mb) and the md5 (C1A843913269018A8FC962407D7E5169) of the Spybot - Search & Destroy installation file that you have downloaded.

Best regards
