View Full Version : Running Slow & Nebuler Trojan

My system has been running a tab slow - nothing really major, but noticable, especially on start-up and shutting down. Aside from that, Spybot keeps getting a hit on something called "Nebuler" and it cannot get rid of it. As I've said, I've not had any major problems yet, but I don't want to let this fester and get out of control. Following is a Hijackthis log taken just before writing this post:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum is information placed there for you. I suggest you read it all but you must read and follow the "Before you Post" instructions so you can see stuff like this:

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines. Otherwise the log is hard to read.
1) Post a new HJT log with Word Wrap disabled.

2) Post the information Spybot is showing you about this trojan.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Google for that BHO and you will see it was added to the Spybot S&D database around September of 2008.
http://www.wizcrafts.net/blogs/2008/09/spybot_search_and_destroy_definitions_update_19.html
++ Nebuler.BHO <<< here
What you are seeing is a left over registry entry because the BHO was removed and the registry entry (can not harm you) was not.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=34063 <<< another link where this issue was addressed.

Nebuler.BHO: [SBI $84C71824] Settings (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\w32id
See what I highlited in red, I believe Spybot, if updated and immunized, will remove that registry entry if you tell it to do so, see this:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html

Let's look at the uninstall list:
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Adobe Reader 8.1.4 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

BitLord 1.1 <<< p2p program, uninstall in Add Remove programs.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

Java DB 10.2.2.0 <<< don't know what that is?

Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
these are all out of date and unsafe:

Spybot - Search & Destroy
Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.

Let's run a free diagnostic to see what it shows us, do this before the next information posted.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)

You have a load of running processes, look at this information to help you improve performance:

Ah, okay, I guess I never checked the box to get rid of the registry entry x.x But it's fixed now, it doesn't show up anymore.

Okay, Spybot is updated and immunized!

Wow, quite a list - I guess getting lax and not looking at that stuff for months and getting behind in updates cost me. I've updated the Flash Player, I've updated the Reader, BitLord is removed, the database is removed and I've updated to the latest Java, 6-13 and removed the older entries.

Ah, that was a doozy, but I think I have a link to the PCPitstop test results - I did the full spectrum of tests. Here is the link: http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22040268&report=Summary

Yeah, I have been wondering why there are so many, I will definitely look into those since I've gotten up-to-date on the programs and got the diagnostic finished.

I suggest you review the information at each of the fixes, they are explaned well, but if you do have questions, post them. You need to visit Nvidia site and get your drivers up to date. The lack of free drive space is a real problem. Here is what PCPitstop has to say.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/tips/DskAdd.asp?conid=22040268

PC Pitstop recommends that you maintain at least 25 percent of disk space free for optimal performance. With less than 25 percent free, your system performance degrades rapidly. As the free space decreases, the hard drive fragments more rapidly, negatively impacting system performance, and your hard drive's useful life.

You can google for information about how much free space is needed and you may not need as much as 25%, but 10% is very low:
http://www.coolnerds.com/Newbies/Fear/hddFear/hddFear.htm

Free-up the hard disk space
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/space.htm
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+free+hard+drive+space&btnG=Search

Disk maintenance become more important:
Defragmenting
http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm
Check for Disk Errors in Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Will there be anything else?

I have been and still am, a lot of information to take in! Useful information, too : D I really do need to free up more space, go on a cleaning spree, this is even more incentive to do so.

As for more, no, I do not think so - and thank you so much for all the help and all the links. Looks like I have quite a bit of work ahead of me, but it's more than worth it for more speed and stability.

Again, thank you!
