I know that there is something infecting my computer... My version of Norton expired and before I could install any other anti-virus software something has taken control of my PC. My applications crash randomly. The PC itself reboots randomly. I had an error with java and now I cannot reinstall it. I cannot install any anti-virus software.

Here is a copy of the hijackthis log... please help...

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.

Not sure I can help, but if you will follow directions I will give it a try.

1) Keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting.

2) Follow these directions to properly position HJT as was stated in the directions:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close HJT until I ask for a new HJT log.

3) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

8) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

You have posted an MBAM report from:
Database version: 1945

The newest data base is: (Database 2050 Date 4/27/2009)
Open MBAM interface then click Update tab > Check for Updates > allow MBAM to download and install all updates.

Now click Scanner > Perform full scan follow the same directions and post those results along with a new HJT log created after MBAM has run.

How is the computer running now?

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Adobe Reader 8.1.0
Adobe Reader 8.1.2
Both are out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)

I really see no reason for the issues you are having? Are you not able to post any error messages when this occurs so I have something to research. Sounding more and more like issues other than malware.

You can wait until we stabilize the computer to update your programs if you wish, just stay away from PDF files until Adobe Reader and Flash player is up to date.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)

Thanks

Here is the link from pcpitstop... let me know if it doesn't work...

http://pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22060303

most of the time when the computer reboots I don't get an error message

however next time an app shuts down I will post the message...

when trying to install any virus scanners it tells me the file is corrupt... (I've tried downloading onto other computers as well and using a flash drive same message)

for what ever reason I could not update Adobe it kept crapping out saying that the downloads could not be verified.

I have the same issue with Java...

Any of those performance or driver issues can easily be causing your problem. Click the link in from of each item and follow the directions to fix them. When all items have been corrected, run a new diagnostic test and post the results for me to view.

This is two vague for me to begin to comment on. What file is corrupt, what are you trying to download. Is the Flash drive you are using infected?

for what ever reason I could not update Adobe it kept crapping out saying that the downloads could not be verified.
If you don't have the patience to get your programs up to date, I can't really help you. Perhaps you need to take this computer to a local technician.

You can try getting rid of all the add-ons:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

If I was having the problems I would uninstall Firefox and download a new program and this time I would not plug in all the junk.

I have tried to download and install both AVG and avast! neither will allow me to install the error message tells me the files are corrupt. I have tried to install Java to use trend micro's online scanner and I receive Error 1335. I follow those instructions and receive more error messages.

I did attempt to fix the driver issues for the networking and graphics however I encountered the same problem after I downloaded them to the computer on my attempt to install them the files were corrupted and I was told to try and download them again.

This is the error message I receive when attempting to install Adobe

Adobe has detected a corrupt file (checksum error). The program has been closed without installing.

Please send the Info ID to http://www.adobe.com/misc/bugreport.html

I'll rescan pcpitstop... I was in the middle of doing so and IE crashed giving pcpitstop's dll as the cause...

Sounds like you may have a file infector virus (like Virut) which would require a reformat. Scan with Kaspersky Online Scan to find out.

Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/languages/english/check.html?n=1213442456390

1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post
