View Full Version : Need help with malware, IE pop-ups.
Hello~
Thanks in advance for the help.
The symptoms are simply that while there is no process running at all, no web browser or anything, an IE window will pop up and try to connect itself to a website such as http: //rxtraffclicks.com or http: //218.93.202.50
I have avast! antivirus installed and that will warn me everytime that it prevented me from connecting to those sites, and the page would load with a "Server not found" IE error in the former case or a 404 error in the latter. I just have to continually close the windows everytime they pop and then i can go on with my business. There are no other apparent effects, no slowdown or anything.
I have Firefox installed and i use it myself but recently someone also using the PC checked their Yahoo mail using IE and got an avast! virus infection alert, ever since then i have performed some scans with both avast and Spybot S&D and deleted some files but the windows pop-ups persist. Here is my HJT log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.
Since TeaTimer is not disabled, I have to assume you did not read the directions, please do that now so you know what is expected of you.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Just a short note, I did follow your instructions and disabled avast before going on with the process, and then when i restarted the computer to restore my internet connection (after combofix was done) as you suggested, avast was active. This time it did not give me any more virus warning messages which was great. I will wait for further instructions,
Thanks so much again for your help~

Please do this in the numbered order:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\pch.bat
c:\windows\t55ft2633f44.dat
c:\windows\t55ft2659f44.dat
c:\windows\t55ft2655f44.dat
c:\windows\st_1240636730.exe
c:\windows\st_1240640255.exe
c:\windows\st_1240654344.exe
c:\windows\st_1240616021.exe
Folder::
c:\windows\9g2234wesdf3dfgjf23
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

The computer has been running fine, there have been no more pop-ups or virus alerts. I've noticed a minor thing, after i ran combofix the first time a new "Internet Explorer" icon appeared on the desktop so i now have two of them. Should i just right click and delete both? I'm hoping it would prevent people from using it by mistake/relflex if the IE desktop shortcuts were gone.
Waiting for news or further instructions,
Thanks!

While we are doing this repair, no one else should be using this computer at all? Once we remove combofix, if everything does not go back to normal, we will address those issues then. I am wondering why Recovery Console is not getting installed? You all allowing combofix to install it...correct?
Let me know about Recovery Console so I will know how to proceed. As far as I can see everything look good except that.
Thanks
Right, no one else is using the computer ever since we've started the process here, i was just refering to the future but if you say that will be fixed when we're done then its all good, i'll just go through with your indications.
As for the recovery console i have not been allowing combofix to install it. Can you give me some details about how Combofix will proceed to install it if i accept? Will it link me to Microsoft's website to download/install it from there? If that is the case i have been trying to avoid that for WinXP CD-key reasons :x
So it might not work.
Thank you~
pskelley

If you have a valid Windows XP CD you have Recovery Console available on it. If you need to recover from a problem, you can drop in the CD and boot to Recovery Console.
Instruction for installing are at in the link I provided here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix#manual_recovery
4. Manually installing the Windows Recovery Console
If you prefer not to install it, let me know and I will proceed.
Thanks
Yeah i will skip this step and wait for further instructions.
Thanks

Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update Avast4 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

Hi pskelley,
The MBAM and avast scans went fine, no more junk was found.
I just have a few questions if you dont mind, its minor details so sorry for asking. First i still have 2 IE icons on the desktop, one of them has the small arrow in the lower left corner of the icon and the other one doesnt. Can i just delete both or? I've always wanted to remove all IE shortcuts off the desktop so that no one clicks it but i've hesitated because usually when you delete a shorcut with Right click + delete, Windows pops up a warning saying that this only deletes the shortcut and doesnt uninstall the program, but this doesnt happen when i try to delete IE icon. Sorry again for the newbie question.
Second, speaking of IE, should i still reactivate TeaTimer even if i intend to make sure that IE is never used again? Is it ok to use Spybot Resident and avast and a firewall (i plan to install one soon) at the same time?
Finally, i think i will keep MBAM as you suggested, but i assume it is safe to uninstall ERUNT and Hijackthis?
Thanks so much for all your help!! :)

Click or doubleclick those, if they both open Internet Explorer 6.0. then right click and delete the one with the small arrow (shortcut) I also strongly suggest you think about updating Internet Exployer. IE7 has been available for a long time and is more secure than IE6 and Internet Explorer 8 is now released.
Second, speaking of IE, should i still reactivate TeaTimer even if i intend to make sure that IE is never used again? Is it ok to use Spybot Resident and avast and a firewall (i plan to install one soon) at the same time?Yes (I personally use nothing but IE even though I have Firefox installed for emergencies.
but i assume it is safe to uninstall ERUNT and Hijackthis?
Both programs are free and require only disk space.
ERUNT:

Registry backups should be a part of almost any major change in your system. I would keep this tool and use it to protect yourself from registry problems that can occur with even something as simple as a download.
HJT: I have had a copy of HJT for many years (since it's creation) and even though hackers are learning more and more how to hide from HJT, I still consider it a valuable asset to operations that will do much more than create a HJT log, see this tutorial.

Hope the information helps

Alright then, thanks for the clarifications. I have deleted the IE shortcut and reactivated TeaTimer. I also checked my version of Flash player as you suggested earlier, and i am up to date to the newest version 10.0.22.87 in Firefox but the Flash player for IE is still at 10.0.12.36. Firefox is set as my main browser so should i still update it in IE? I'm not too sure how this works.
Thanks

My suggestion would be to keep all programs as up to date as possible.
Thanks:)
