hey,,,

got some weird things happening,,,, first my virus protection software disappears !!!!! (its telus ecare or som like that) reinstall did not work :S
and now i am infected with a virus i believe is called virtmonde
unfortunetly i have been unable to remove it and am now seeking your help :)
i no longer see it appear in my scans through spybot but the system is deffinetly acting weird, now i only get some things called win32.src (some like that, cant remember the exact name,,, i would have to scan agian to get it)


anyway,,, any help would be MUCH appreciated,

Peter, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Virtumonde is present and it and be removed, unfortunately, this infection can not:

This machine needs to be formatted.

This system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

hey pskelly

thanks for the replay (even though it brought bad news):sad:
I will try to attempt to restore the pc with the restore disks, but i was wondering, are there any precautions i need to take since the the virus infects both memory and possibly any restore points on the pc (using restore disk should though circumvent that problem, right !!! ).

I had a external hard drive connected to the pc for the last days, although i haven't used it at all (99% sure), the blog said that virut would actually (possibly) infect ALL .exe files, so is there a scan i could perform to check if the hard drive was spared or is there NO hope and i should just format it to :sad:

And for any future precautions, how do the computers get infected in the first way, is it like automatically just through connecting to the internet or do i actually have to click on link that leads to malicious website and is running program such as Avast a sufficient protection. (sorry for asking ssooo many questions :red:, its just reformatting the pc OR the hard drive is not something that people look forward too)

I have only had to perform one reformat and that was on a Windows 98SE box, so I am not the best person to ask the questions you are asking. If I was in your position, I would use Google for information, for instance:

As is explained, if you save one infected file you can get reinfected, so it is best to bite the bullet and wipe the drive clean, then reinstall nothing that was there. Here is some information:
