Webwatcher infection

Hello,

I've been recently infected with webwatcher and my private data was exposed. Out of inexperience, I downloaded spybot, ran a check and fixed the problems using spybot. A forum member (matt, who has been pretty helpful so far) asked me to visit this section and do what the 1st thread says to do, and I produced the HJT log

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.
Make sure you read those directions so you see stuff like this:

as such it should beable to uninstall via Add Remove programs. So I am not real sure what you want us to do?

Let's take a look like this:

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

That's it. I edited out the stuff you told me I can from the uninstall list. Malware mybytes discovered an ardamax keylogger in my system. It's pretty weird though because spybot never detected it. Hopefully spybot tea timer (which was off throughout this process ) prevented it from sending any data for the past few days.

Look at each item in the uninstall list, I see nothing that looks like Webwatcher?

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

The POL.exe file still appears. Tried to run a spybot scan and it crashed right at the end, but the log showed a right media cookie tracker detected and fixed. No evidence of webwatcher or any keylogger. Only the POL.exe file in the HJT log is giving me the creeps.

In the above HJT log that you just posted, TeaTimer is still running:

TeaTimer is powerful enough to block our removal attempts. If you can not disable it, then uninstall Spybot S&D before you proceed, then restart the computer. You can install Spybot S&D once you are clean of the keylogger.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) To be sure, open Task Manager, then on the Processes tab, End Process on this item if you see it: C:\Program Files\POL\POL.exe

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Looks good to me, let's do this to be sure.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

Update ESET and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Since I run the risk of being infected with spyware very often (because like you already know, others have physical access to my computer), would it be a wise decision to create a system restore point today (i.e. with the clean system), so that in case of any future suspicions, I can just use system restore? or is system restore useless in eradicating malware? yes this is my personal computer, but my family member also use it from time to time. Webwatcher was installed by one of them while I was out of the house, that's why I need a quick and reliable method of recovering the system, since there is a huge chance they will install it (or any other spyware) again. From your statement, I guess that system restore is reliable. I'll do what you told me to and create a clean restore point tomorrow. Thanks again !

I beg your pardon, but do you mean me using a limited account for everyday activities ( to minimise the effect malware can have ) or only allowing them to use limited accounts so that they can't install anything, because I don't really think they'll agree on using limited accounts. Thanks again.

It seems like this POL.exe file only appears when I switch Tea Timer on. That happened earlier too if you read the previous posts. I'm gonna run a malwarebytes anti malware scan and see what it tells me.

Looks like it may be the TeaTimer memory keeping the item in the registry, let's try this.

1) Download TeaTimerWipe.bat to the Desktop
www.neoshine.co.uk/mina/Downloads/TTWipe.bat
Double click TeaTimerWipe.bat then read and follow the prompts carefully.
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer from restoring them upon reactivation).

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [POL Agent] C:\Program Files\POL\POL.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Restart the computer and check a new HJT log to be sure the item is gone. No need to post again if that is the case.
