Inherited Computer, promised trojans

[hamburglar]

My friend gave me his old laptop and he promised there would be some malware on it. I installed Spybot and tried to run the scan but the computer would always shut off on its own. I tried to boot into safe mode and it was also shutting off by itself. The computer runs OKAY, but it still lags here and there, so I suspect something is wrong. It scares me that safemode doesn't work well. Here is my Hijack This log. Please help!

oh, and one more thing, before this scan i did uninstall some p2p tv stuff from china. i googled one of the processes i saw in the task manager, i forget what it was exactly something like aap****.exe and it went away, but i'm afraid it left some nasty stuff on the machine.

i know i should just wait for a response, but i just wanted to add this. i tried scanning with malwarebytes and something triggered a shutdown. then on startup, a window flashed and shut down the computer again.

also, when i closed firefox, it showed that it had a bunch of instances open. that seems fishy. i'm not exactly sure what is the problem with the computer, and i am unable to accurately diagnose because it keeps shutting down.

hi,

i dont recognize any malware in the log but that dosnt mean you dont have any. Malware is not the cause of all computers problems. The laptop could simply be overheating for some reason. If you can get a updated malwarebytes spybot and your AV to complete a scan and they look ok, then you might look for other causes. a good place to start is the laptops manuf. website. you can troubleshoot the causes and possible solutions for unexplained random shutdowns there.

thanks for the response. i completed the "smart" scans with malwarebytes and norton and they found nada, so i hope they and you are correct. i still wasnt able to complete any "comprehensive" scans, but maybe they were shutting down because it was like 90 degrees the other day. i'll try cleaning the hardware and starting again.

you said that just because you didn't see any malware on the hjt log doesn't mean that there isn't any... is there any way for me to try and dig deeper to be positive there aren't any? like i said before i took some p2p programs off the machine so i'd just like to be sure.

I would rely on the updated anti-malware scans and AV scans for possible malware. I would try to complete a full scan not a quick scan (in malwarebytes case)Not all malware will show up in a hjt log.

looks ok to me. one last thing you can do is a online scan if you want, just as another check for any malware. Then I would visit the maunf. website and check into caused for random shut downs:

i hope its just the summer weather.
Using a laptop in a warm environment may not help the situation, but laptops with all the electronics in such a small space can generate alot of heat. normally this is removed by a fan and a exit duct. Mix in some dust and air may not move around so well causing over heating. This is one reason why it may shut down, there are others. visit the laptop manuf. website for possible causes and solutions.

Heres some tips for helping to remain malware free:

Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version:

1) It is essential to Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could be exploited. 2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons, like adware, toolbars and malware. Do not install any files from ads, popups or random links. Do not fall for fake warnings about virus and trojans being found on your computer and your then prompted to install software to remedy this. 3) Install and keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless. Scanning frequency is a function of your computer habits.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

8) Install and understand the limitations of a software firewall.
