View Full Version : Runtime packed fsg warning from AVG?

I recently did a re-format due to Win32/Virut, and after re-formatting I played every pre-caution to make sure my other drives were clean by running AVG, Spybot S&D, and Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I picked up a few things and removed them once I did and it looked as if everthing was fine until now. Runtime packed fsg is popping up in Resident Shield from AVG and says the location is in my System32/svchost.exe file. Is this a false positive or should I be concerned about it? By the way I just installed a new XP theme from Belchfire.net, could this be the problem?

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.
I am not really sure, I will see if I can help and we will start like this.
1) Read "Before you Post" again carefully, since you missed the instructions to disable TeaTimer we want to be sure you missed nothing else you need to know.
2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
3) I need the error message you are receiving "word for word", exactly as you get it.
4) Let's update AVG and scan like this:
* Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
* Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
* Close results and close the Interface.
* Copy and paste the contents of that file. (unless it should be clean, then just tell me)
5) I would like a look at your uninstall list for potential problems:
Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

I think I got it right this time and hhope I didnt miss anything. I did a scan with AVG per your instructions with no infections. I disabled Tea Timer and saved another HJT log and here are the results. By the way it may be awhile later on today before I can get back with you or post results from other instructions you give me. I am working 12-15 hour days right now. Sorry about the delay in response and thank you once again.

Since AVG is scanning clean, click History at the top of the AVG interface then Virus Vault then Empty Vault.

Let's do more cleaning and have MBAM take a look for junk.
1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to My Web Search Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <<< delete that folder and contents if there
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I followed each step (all 6) from your last reply exatly as you desribed and I will post the results below from the mbam log and the uninstall list I failed to post before, Sorry, I thought I had everything right. A few things I need to let you know first before the logs:
The O23 - Service line did not show in the HJT scan. I fixed all others how you desribed though.
Also while I was running Mbam, another Resident shield warning came up from AVG with the following 2,
Trojan Horse BMO.IMS located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{F030456C*******(I healed and left this located in the Virus Vault until instructed to remove), and
Runtime packed fsg also came up located in almost the same directory but in D:\System Volume Information\_restore{F030456C***(It did not give me the option to heal or move to the vault, only to add to exceptions which I DID NOT).
There is alot in the Mbam log but I did remove all the infections that came up. The computer does seem to run a little slower now than before the format and before I became infected with the Win32/Virut (also before the format), but seems to be somewhat stable. The uninstall list is posted below the Mbam log.

Trojan Horse BMO.IMS located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{F030456C <<< this is in System Restore and Microsof protects those files. We will clean those soon and it can not harm you unless you should do a System Restore using the restore date that is infected...so don't!
Runtime packed fsg also came up located in almost the same directory but in D:\System Volume Information\_restore{F030456C

Moving on, this is what we will do next, make sure all System Restore files are checked if you have an option for both C & D drives:
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer
Open MBAM > Click the Update tab > click Check for Updates > allow MBAM to download and install the newest version.
click the > Perform Full Scan
Make sure to delete anything found (may be clean) Post the results, or let me know if it is clean.

1) As far as system restore monitoring both drives, yes it was. It was merely overlooked from my recent format to turn it off on that drive.
2) I installed PSI and turned it off in msconfig per your recommendation.
3) I scanned with PSI and ran the solution for both the Adobe flash player update and WinRar update per PSI’s instructions. I also installed the same version of flash player that PSI gave me directly from Adobe’s web site just incase. Re-scanned clean.
4) Uninstalled Earth 3D space screensaver just incase.
* Out of curiosity, why isn’t screensavers needed anymore?
5) Turned off system restore and rebooted as instructed and turned system restore back on (turned of the D: drive at this point) re-booted again.
6) Opened Mbam, updated, allowed update install and Performed Full Scan as instructed and was clean as below.
We must be doing something right because the system is booting up faster and seems much more stable at this point.

Since you reformatted, you probably installed it with a valid program. Few folks take the time to read the EULA agreement before they install programs and as a result adware and other malware gets installed because it is bundled. Legally the "end user" must be informed but that information does little good if the information is not read.

I did another AVG scan that came back totally clean. Thank you very much for all of your help. You guys are awesome and I cant thank you enough for your help. I recently donated to Spybot and will continue to do so periodically for everything you do. Spybot S&D is an awesome program and it should be on every computer in the world. We are all lucky to have you guys out there to help us without even charging us. :2thumb:
