I work at an office, and have been given the privilege of fixing a computer on our network. Please note that I am not an 'IT' guy; just a guy who has moderate knowledge on computers.
The computer in question would not start in normal mode. I went to safe mode and attempted to run a virus scan. Norton would not start. I downloaded Malware Anti-bytes and installed, but it would not start. I downloaded Norman Malware Cleaner and ran a scan. Please see log.
This allowed me to start in normal mode and run Malware Anti-Bytes. Please see log.
After all this is done, I was still not able to launch Spybot S&D. So I ran a virus scan, and a Trojan.Flush.M was found. When I went to follow removal instructions from Symantec's website, the entries were not on my box. I then searched for help, and that is why I am here. There is still an issue with this computer, and I would ask any help that could be given. Thank you so much!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.
First you need to be aware that you are dealing with criminals from the Ukraine and who knows what else.

You said: "a computer on our network" please view the information in this link.

More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.
To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.
It's not that we don't want to help, but there are too many issues that could arise from a networked company machine that malware forum volunteers are not experienced in dealing with.
Thank you for your understanding.
My advice, if they are dealing with secure information, is to consult a security professional, and you may want to pull the plg on this network until that is done.
Thanks

Thank you so much for responding.
This is a very small company (10 employees), so there is really no IT department. The boss has pulled the plug on this box, but wanted to know if it could still be attempted to 'clean' it.
Is it best to reformat? or is there another method?
All other boxes on the network have been checked with Spybot S&D, with no infection noticed.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks again for the response.
I won't be at the computer until 8am EST, but I know for a fact that I cannot get Spybot S&D to start. I can update, but it will not load. In the system tray, it show the spybot resident icon, but again, it will not run.
Suggestions?
Thank you for your time.

Do your best to get TeaTimer disabled as instructed. It's job is to block changes and that is what we must to do remove this junk. If you can not disable TeaTimer, run combofix anyway.
Thanks

You can see what was causing the problems in "Other Deletions" in the combofix log. Let's look at the uninstall list and Spybot S&D issues next.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html
Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 << out of date, uninstall:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Spybot S&D: I can not see any reason for having issues and perhaps with the malware quarantined you won't. See now if you can disable TeaTimer:
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
If you can disable it, then post a new HJT log. If you can not, then see if Add Remove programs will uninstall Spybot S&D now. Restart after the uninstall.
I will wait on your report or a new HJT log.
Thanks...Phil

I completed all tasks from your last post. Had a bit of trouble with Adobe Flash Player and PSI program, but it is all sorted out now.
I was able to access S&D, and turned off the Tea Timer prior to the other tasks being completed.
Here is an updated HJT Log:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
(you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, no need to download, but make sure you update to: Database 2058 Date 4/29/2009 and run the program as directed)
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
Tutorial if needed:

How is the computer running, any malware issues?
Thanks...Phil

Sorry for delayed response, but I only have access at work.
I followed the above steps, but when I go to run a full scan w/ Malware, I lock up at around 78k objects scanned.
I've done it 3x and here is the file that gets locked on:
c:\windows\inf\appmig.inf - locked on this one twice
c:\windows\installer\23bd2.msi - locked up once
I can run a quick scan and get an error free log. I've included an HJT log as well.
Also, my quick virus scan popped up today, and still showed I had a Trojan.Flush.M on my system.

Is maintenance being done on this computer regularly?
Check for Disk Errors in Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
Defragmenting
http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm
Make sure MBAM is up to date:
Open MBAM > Click the Update tab > click Check for Updates > allow MBAM to download and install the newest version.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/
Run a full scan and post the results unles they are clean.
Also, my quick virus scan popped up today, and still showed I had a Trojan.Flush.M on my system.
Is this a scan from Symantec/Norton? Tell me exactly where the scan says this item is located.
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/languages/english/check.html?n=1213442456390
1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post
Thanks

I must apologize, I had posted a response yesterday. For some reason it didn't post.
The condensed form of my 'lost' post.
I ran the windows disk clean up proggy, and tried to run MBAM. Still locked up. So, I started in safe mode, and ran successfully. There was one infection. Please see report below.
I attempted to run Kapersky multiple times, but have underestimated the time requirements. Yesterday (when I posted my response), I had been running it for 6 + hours and was only at 48% completion. I cannot leave that box on overnight due to an anxious boss.
Norton System Works v.2007.10.00 Build: 113; is what is on this machine. I ran a full scan and here is where the issues are:

Did you folks install this item on purpose?
C:\Program Files\Google\Google Toolbar\Component\fastsearch_A8904FB862BD9564.dll
Most of what Norton is finding is quarantined in combofix, let's remove it and check again.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: []
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'Default user')
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update Norton and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
When you get to this point, give me a performance report. Make sure the items on the uninstall list are updated also.
Thanks
