Hi bjorning

Do you mean that you deleted internet explorer?

bjorning
2009-04-28, 21:01
I deleted all iexplorer executables (there were multiples when I searched my system- deleted, not task-mange closed)- however, I can still access internet properties...

Shaba
2009-04-28, 21:15
So then first step would be reverting back system to step before that using system restore.

Please post a fresh hijackthis log after that.

bjorning
2009-04-29, 06:54
Multiple and various restore attempts failed-

Shaba
2009-04-29, 07:20
Then you can download IE8 and install that.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log afterwards.

I don't want IE...

You don't have to use it but it is part of operating system :)

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

After that, please post back a fresh HijackThis log.

i'm currently running C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWService.exe

but i'll look into AntiVir too

Shaba
2009-04-29, 20:54
Ad-Aware is antispyware and not antivirus. It has also no real-time protection. You will need also antivirus.

Please install one of the free ones I suggested, post back a fresh hijackthis log and we will continue.

i'm asked to login to windows too, which is new- i'm the only user and cannot recall ever baving to login.

Did AVG found something related to virut or vitro?

If it did, it is no wonder that windows won't boot as virut is file infector and likely infected system files.

bjorning
2009-04-30, 20:51
t is definitely wide spread.. not sure all whats there... i wish i would have let it go a couple days as i have a huge deadline to meet tomorrow...

assuming i'll need to wipe and reinstall XP now?

Shaba
2009-04-30, 20:53
Yes but you can backup important data first, no .exe, .scr, .html and .htm files though.

I don't recommend using usb sticks/external hard drives as it can spread through them. CD/DVD is better choice.

bjorning
2009-04-30, 22:31
hooked up different hdd to use os for pulling needed files-

now avg is finding virut on the other hdd- is virut a no win situation?

what do i do now? start a thread for the other hdd too?

bjorning
2009-04-30, 22:38
i didnt transfer files hdd to hdd-just infected hdd to thumb (only option right now)- using clean hdd for os

Shaba
2009-04-30, 22:38
Yes it was a bad idea. CD/DVD is practically only worth trying considering backupping.

Virut isn't practically curable so it is a no win situation. So you can backup important files (no .exe, scr., .htm and .html) to CD/DVD and reformat both hdds.

bjorning
2009-05-01, 06:34
and the best way to access the files without infecting more hdds? use infected drive #2 to burn cds?

why cds over thumbs- i can wipe thumbs just as well after transfer right...

Shaba
2009-05-01, 11:26
Best way would be disabling autorun first from both computer. Let me know if you need help with that.

However, if you are planning to use usb sticks it can still autolaunch something and that's why CD/DVD is preferred.
