1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
Post the C:\rapport.txt
3) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg
Recap: Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the log from combofix, a new HJT log (run after combofix) and the uninstall list.
Thanks

Ran everything according to the instructions. As far as I can tell, I'm not getting the pop-ups anymore, but the computer still seems to be running a little sluggish (although that may be because the computer is getting old).
Here are the 4 logs-

I am posting a lot of information at once. In no way am I expecting you to rush with the instructions. Take the time you need to complete the instructions safely and if you run into questions, stop and post them.
Smitfraudfix did locate some issues, please run the clean function like this:
Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Before we start, can you tell me about this item, are you sure it is safe for your computer?

C:\VundoFix Backups
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Ughh... I've got knots in my stomach.
I did the Smitfraudfix stuff as per your instructions, and upon restarting my computer, all of the settings for Windows and Internet Explorer were back to factory settings. The computer no longer has internet access and there are no connections to choose from in the network settings panel. I still have my bookmarks and desktop shortcuts, but it looks like everything else was reset to factory settings . Is there a way to fix this or do I need to reset everything manually? I won't be moving on to the other steps until this step is finished. Thanks.
For reference, the exact steps that showed up on the screen during Smitfraudfix running:
Computer was in safe mode (without networking enabled).
Ran option 2.
Was prompted for registry cleaning (pressed Y).
No other prompts were displayed and the program finished (hit Q to quit).
Rebooted computer in normal mode.

Give this a try:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm
If that should not work, try this:
Go to Control Panel > Network Connections.
Right-click on the network icons and select Repair.
Thanks

Nope, didn't work . I downloaded the program and ran it, but nothing changed. I can't right click on any of the connections to repair them because there aren't any there to connect. In running the smitfraudfix, it reset things back to their factory settings and deleted any network settings that had been created. Thus, (on all profiles) the backgrounds have been reset, all custom options (such as toolbar preferences, start menu settings, etc.) have been reset, screen resolution, etc. The computer doesn't even recognize any peripherals connected through USB ports (printer, camera, webcam, etc.). At this point, I'm going to salvage the few important files I have (mostly pictures and Microsoft Money backup files) onto my laptop and then reformat the computer. Thanks for the help in any case.

In running the smitfraudfix, it reset things back to their factory settings and deleted any network settings that had been created.
I have used Smitfraudfix many times and it does not do what you say. The malware we are trying to remove may have caused the problem.
