View Full Version : Svchost.exe Application Error - cmd won't work
Hi,
I have a Dell PC running Windows XP SP 3 WINNT 5.01.2600
I started getting a Svchost.exe Application Error. “the instruction at "0x10001e39" referenced memory at "0x037bb000". the memory could not be read” every time I used the PC. The performance became very slow, and it would not shut down after this error occurred. I searched for information online and went through steps recommended at sites like the following.
http://swigartconsulting.blogs.com/tech_blender/2006/07/windows_update_.html
http://www.pchell.com/support/svchosterror.shtml
At this point I realized that “Windows Task Manager” would not run, “cmd” would not execute, and if I tried to do a Windows update it would hang when I tried to start the download.
I started to suspect a virus or Malware and ran through all the suggestions shown on this thread.
www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t219956.html
The tools listed in that thread reported some suspected spyware and malware, and I let them delete it. But the basic problem didn't go away.
To be honest, I went on so many websites and tried various tools and suggestion over multiple evenings that I've lost track of everything I did and tried. If I had any idea that the issue would be this difficult to correct I would have taken notes from the start.
I downloaded “Absolute Startup” an stopped all “Useless” and many “at your option” programs from starting at boot up. I looked at “services” but was not comfortable messing with that.
The other day I noticed that Windows Firewall was turned off. Not sure why or how long. I used to have Norton Anti-virus and Firewall on the PC, but have been running Bit Defender for several months.
At some point the pc started shutting down normally again, and task manager started working again. Windows update finally worked again today for some reason, and I did three "critical" updates.
Some things still seem odd, like the installation of IE 8 hung and I had to power off the PC, but it seems OK since reboot. But the one item that still won't work is "cmd". It behaves as described in this thread: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=47823
"When I try to open CMD there is no error message. Everything on the screen disappears except for my background. Then they all come back, as if I were being logged on again. The computer does not acknowledge that I tried to open CMD at all." Same thing on my PC.
Below is a HijackThis log of my PC. I have not opened up any threads on any other websites regarding this issue. Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Since TeaTimer is not disabled as instructed, I must assume you missed the "Before you Post" instructions. Please read them now so you know what is expected of you.
Any reason you have Symantec running on the computer at the same time as BitDefender?
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2009
If not this tool will remove the leftover Symantec:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
Google is returning nothing on the error you posted, if you get it again, would you please post the error word for word, just as Windows give it to you. Post any error messages you receive as we work together.
No malware that I can see in the HJT log, but something may be hidden. If you wish to continue, we will start our search like this.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I was called away by work, but am back now.
I did read the “Before You Post” instructions, but thought I’d leave tea timer on until debug started to keep the PC protected. It is off now as per your instructions.
I’m 95% sure that “the instruction at "0x10001e39" referenced memory at "0x037bb000". the memory could not be read” is the exact Svchost.exe Application Error I was getting. When I searched I found that others were getting this message but with different numbers. A Google search of ”the instruction at referenced memory at the memory could not be read”, gets many hits. If I get the error again I will post exactly what it says.
No, there is no reason I should have Symantec running and didn’t realize it was. Thanks for catching that. I downloaded the uninstall tool from the link you provided and did the uninstall. There are still two DLLs in that directory, but the EXE is now gone.
I downloaded ComboFix then disabled AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. The first time I tried to run ComboFix it stopped during what appeared to be the install. I waited for several minutes, but nothing. At that point I could not open task manager or reboot, so had to power off. After reboot it installed and ran fine.
Listed here are the ComboFix, a new Hijackthis logs, and a Hijackthis uninstall list.
Thanks for your help!!

Thanks for the feedback, let's look at the uninstall list first.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
Adobe Reader 7.0
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Adobe Reader 7.1.0
All out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2009/04/update_on_adobe_reader_issue.html
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <<< very old
Java DB 10.4.1.3
Java(TM) 6 Update 12
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 12
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 5
I am not sure what you use the Development Kits for, you may have to query Java before removing them, but the rest of the Java (especially that old version) are out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< you may need this tool to remove old versions.
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition <<< not sure you need this, I understand it's free, but if it runs, it uses a load of resources.
Viewpoint Media Player
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

combofix: Since it is showing only one item removed, it is possible it removed other malware that did not show in the log. I see this.
ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt 2009-05-09 01:28
Should be here: C:\qoobox\quarantine\ <<< content of folder in RED
I would like a look at those contents if possible, you may attach the .txt file if you wish.
I would like to see a scan result from updated MBAM, no need to download if you still have it, just make sure to update and run as instructed.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running, any malware issues?
Thanks...Phil
Hi Phil,
I used PSI to clean up old programs. Thanks for pointing me to that. As part of this cleanup I installed the Revo uninstaller and started using it.
When I was removing programs I saw brief message about Sonic RecordNow. It was gone before it occurred to me that this is what ComboFix removed. Should I run ComboFix again?
Thanks for the links on how to speed up the PC. Yes, I agree this PC needs some “spring cleaning” and I have started. These links will help me.
ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt is under C:\qoobox\, not C:\qoobox\quarantine\. I have attached it. The only file under quarantine is catchme.log. It wouldn't attached, so here is the text.
catchme.log

So, no Malware detected, and right now everything seems OK. I've deleted all old software that you and PSI pointed out and now have latest versions.
Thanks again,

I had turned tea timer back on, and realized this is what may have given the message about Sonic RecordNow. So I went into Spybot and looked at the resident log. Sure enough here is the entry.
4/27/2009 9:46:28 AM Allowed (based on lassh blacklist) value "Sonic RecordNow!" (new data: "") added in System Startup user entry!
I didn't do anything with Sonic. I thought it was odd though that ComboFix removed this in the first place. I use RecordNow for burning CDs.
Thanks,
Gene

Those were registry backups, not the originial file. You can scan those file if you wish here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
It's rare that combofix makes a mistake, but it can happen. That is why combofix quarantines what it removes. If you want to scan those files, do so before you follow these directions.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update BitDefender Antivirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
