View Full Version : Trojans from suspicious site (email?)
Hi
I am posting this for my son, he allowed someone else on this laptop and 'somehow' a page about asian porn was on comp and wouldn't close...I did all that you requested before posting...and am including the HJT log...I know he has some kind of peer to peer program on here, but think it better if you let me know what they are and what to disable and/or uninstall...he uses this machine mainly for World of Warcraft and I am quite sure the infection did not come from playing his game...I also installed S&D, updated, immunized, ran a scan it found some trojans, and some suspicious items that are in the registry...I did NOT fix those problems as you suggested to not run fixes before posting...I did fix the cookies that were found...TeaTimer is disabled and here is the HJT log

Hi Josh, I am not seeing malware in the HJT log that I recognize, but hackers have learned to hide from HJT. I you wish to continue, let's start out search like this.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Hi Phil...sorry I am just getting back to this, my son was not home and I had no access to this comp til today, here is the info you requested. I also have a question...when I ran S&D and it found Trojans, and I DIDN"T fix them, would you like to see that log too?

when I ran S&D and it found Trojans, and I DIDN"T fix them, would you like to see that log too?
Did you run it before or after MBAM. Are you sure Spybot S&D is completely up to date and fully immunized? Keep in mind Spybot places anything it removes in "Recovery" where it can be restored if a mistake is made or deleted completely from the computer when you wish to do so.

Vongo <<< if you want it gone, uninstall it. I do not use it myself, so if you wish advice, you can google for it.
MBAM has quarantined a lot of junk, what I would like you to do is complete the uninstall instructions, then make sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized, then scan with it and remove what it finds. Then post a new HJT log and tell me about any malware issues.

I ran S&D before I posted this original thread, I installed S&D on this comp because I was quite sure there were some problems. It is up to date and fully immunized, I also ran a scan yesterday 'after' the MBAM scan, it came back clean! :bigthumb:

As of August 1, 2008, Vongo stopped accepting new subscribers and was discontinued on September 30, 2008

I understand what you are saying about ERUNT, and doing a backup before cleaning in the registry (as MBAM and other tools we use surely do) is a good thing, I just do not use it myself, prefering to manually backup.
am unsure exactly how you want me to scan just this file.
I looked and all I can think is to restore the file to the original position and scan it there, but if you are uninstalling Vongo, I would just clean out the MBAM quarantine folder after a few days.

I did all you asked and I uninstalled Vongo, plus scanned it with MBAM before uninstalling, it was clean. I just tried to immunize S&D (after updating) here is the message I am getting when trying to immunize::
Immunization incomplete::
There are 28 items still unprotected. There might be various reasons for that::
Other security software (Like AVG Free or ZoneAlarm) on your computer might not look close enough at the immunization changes and mistake them for malware instead of malware protection, blocking them. Help Menu has more information about this (I went to help, it said I could change this in settings...I cannot see how to change it in settings)
On a default Vista Installation (meaning UAC is enabled) you cannot immunize the whole system unless you elevate the immunizer. If you told immunizer to not offer this again, you can get it back in settings.
I don't understand why this is happening, I immunized yesterday and the first day I installed S&D with no problems. It is also saying I can't continue what I am attempting because I don't have or am not on THE adminisrative account...there is only ONE User Account on this computer, so I am definitely on it.
so...since I am unsure I am asking you before I go any further

If you used Add Remove programs to uninstall, it should be fine.
Let do some cleaning and double-checking.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Click the Empty Selected button.

4) Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
5) Update AVG8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

Phil, when I did run ATF, Prefetch folder is not enabled to clean, is this because of Vista?

Trojans found, in the Secunia PSI, Download and uninstall file...I removed them and just did a solitary scan of PSI, with MBAM it came back clean, log of MBAM::

I uninstalled 8 and Phil, when I did run ATF, Prefetch folder is not enabled to clean, is this because of Vista?
Yes...I usually remove the Prefetch information for Vista but missed that:sad:
C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\Uninstall.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Users\mr aquarius\Downloads\PSISetup.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Those are going to be false positives from MBAM, we will notify MBAM that it is happening. You can return those files so the Secunia program is not missing needed files like this:
Open MBAM and click on the Quarantine Tab
Put a check in the box in front of those two items
Then click the Restore button.
Would you do us a favor, with MBAM open, click on More Tools at the top, then the Report False Positive button. That will open a addressed email, briefly tell them about the program Secunia and show them the files that were removed:
C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\Uninstall.exe
C:\Users\mr aquarius\Downloads\PSISetup.exe
If they need more information or a copy of the files, they will let you know.
You can clean some debris leftovers like this:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
