Grandma needs help!

I am coming here because I need help with my computer's problem with unwanted ads and solicitations. It is my granddaughter's old computer but new for me and I can't say for sure what has happened, why or where. I have grandsons who tried to get rid of the problem with spyware programs but it now seems worse than ever. I would like some help but I am not entirely up to speed on what to do- do be patient with me because I will try to understand.

While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.



Looks your computer is infected with the Vundo Trojan :sad: Run this program, follow the instructions and post the log and a new Hijackthis log after its done. Any questions about this fix by all means please post back and ask.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Hi Alma,

It looks like you just ran Spybot Search and Destroy, if you still want my help, please to not run any other programs except the ones I list at the moment as it just confuses the fix.


Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.




Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Ken545, please rest assured that I absolutely want your help but I could not for the life of me remember running that program; however, I have discovered the Spybot program kicks on right when the computer is started up! I will need to figure out how to stop that from happening before I do anything else I suppose. My sincere apologies on that one.

Hello Alma,

You can open Spybot Search and Destroy and after it loads, use the menu up on the top/left and click MODE and select Advanced Mode. Then click the Settings tab to open it, then click on Setting, you will see an option about halfway down named Program Start, uncheck them all, then System Start, click the radio button for No Automation.Then close out Spybot, you may need to reboot for this to take effect.

Then proceed with the rest of the fix.

Well, ken545, I have lost the computer so it seems. I was without internet for some days as the computer did not seem to want to connect so the internet people came to the house and fixed the modem. Soonafter that the computer just quit working altogether. There is nothing but a black screen and an 0xc0000005 message and the computer just won't do anything at all now. I am using my grandson's laptop at the moment.

It seems there is not much else to be done here! But I certainly do thank you for your time and help in the matter! I apologize for taking so long to get back and explain the situation.

So sorry about that Alma, sounds like maybe your hard drive went bad, not sure. If the computer is pretty old its not worth fooling around with, but if its fairly new than you should contact the manufacturer. Do you know of a small shop in your area that you can take it in to have them look at it? Stay away from the large chains, there very expensive.

You can also try posting here and see what they say.
