Hi I'm hoping you can help me...

I have an infection, which I think I have partially cured in that my browser (firefox) is not now being redirected, and I can access spybot and other malware web pages which I couldn't before . I did this by running Hijack this and reading the various 'How to read Hijack this Log' which are on-line.

What I still can't do is

Run Spybot
Run Malware bytes
Run Norton 360 Scan
Run Trend Micro House Call

Please see my log and details below.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.
Hi kmboo and welcome to Safer Networking :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Next:

I notice you have a application installed called PeerGuardian, so if I may bring to your attention the below:

P2P programs (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=218503&postcount=3)

If you have any Peer to Peer applications installed at all, please remove them, thank you.

Next:

Please download Rooter.exe (http://forums.whatthetech.com/redirect.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Feric.71.mespages.googlepages.com%2FRooter.exe) to your desktop.

Right click on Rooter.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.
Post the contents of Rooter.txt in your next reply.
Next:

Now lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer shall we as follows:

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.

Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to start RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:

log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.

Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
Rooter Log.
Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Hi :)

First off many thaks for your reply, and your time, it's much appreciated. I have done as you instructed, please see my response in the order requsted below. You're welcome!

The computer is running as it did prior to downloading and runnning the programs you asked me to.OK thanks for the situation update.

I wasn' too sure what you meant about posting the above logs individually, I hope this is OK.
By that I meant one post for each of the RSIT logs, mainly both for my own ease when researching and to lessen the chance of part of a log being cut off and not posted. No harm done however so do not worry about it OK.

I notice you ran the Rooter scan four times, did you encountered any problems with running the application?

Next:

Now we need to disable three of the security applications you have presently installed so they do not interfere with the malware removal process as follows.

Note: Make you sure you do carry out these steps below as they are very important!

Disable Spybot S&D Registry Guard(TeaTimer):

You may re-enable this fine feature of the aforementioned application when I give the all clear OK.

If you have version 1.5 or 1.6, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
On the left hand side, click on Tools.
Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Lavasoft Ad-Aware:

One of the RSIT logs is reporting the Ad-Watch Live of the aforementioned is active. Please go here (http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=19804) and read this part:

HOW TO TURN OFF AD-WATCH in Ad-Aware 2007 or Ad-Aware 2008

To check this is really not active. My advice however would be to uninstall this application as even when not completely active it still resides in system memory. At the very least do check that Ad-Watch Live is disabled OK.

Turn Off Windows Defender:

This is not a particularly effective application however it cannot be uninstalled because it is a integral part of the Vista operating system.

We do however need it turned off so it does not interfere with the malware removal process.

How to do is explained in this tutorial here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8279)

Now restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Next:

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:-

Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Note: You should have disabled the Anti-Spyware applications I mentioned prior, so here all you need to do is temp' disable the Norton 360 application for the ComboFix run.
Right click combofix.exe and select Run as Administrator & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.
Note: Just re-enable your Norton 360 application not the three prior disabled OK.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

When completed the above, please post back the following:

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
Answer to my Rooter scan query.
ComboFix log.
A new HijackThis Log. <-- Remember to right click on HiJackThis.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Hi Dakeyras

Hope youv'e had a good day.

I notice you ran the Rooter scan four times, did you encountered any problems with running the application?

Yes I did, well sort of, as I said above when I ran this program, a red warning box appeared with the words 'Windows - No Disk' in the top left hand corner. Within the box was a Large Red Cross insidea Red Circle, the Txt next to this read:

Exception Processing Message 0x0000013 Parameters 0x763792A0
0x00000004 0x763792A0 0x763792A0

However it gave me the choice to cancel the message, I did this and the scan result popped up regardless,

That said I have just ran it again to double check the message, and it ran fine, no message popped up and the scan result came up fine.

# Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
# Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
# On the left hand side, click on Tools.
# Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
# You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
# Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
# Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

I can't do this (I have tried) but Spybot will not run.

As this is the case I have not gone any further with your instructions as yet, and await your reply.

Regards... Kevin

OK please disconnect all removable drives and leave them disconcerted. This will include any USB type Hard-Drives also, Flash drives etc.

Do so safely as outlined here (http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/usb-drive.htm). Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Hi Dakeyras

My day was fine thanks, the computer is nothing really in comparison to the problems the majority of people face in this world... Anyway

The computer is now acting fine. I can acces Spybot, update etc. Norton is working again. I haven't tried Malware Bytes as I never really used it before this infection and don't intend to from this point on.

Please see the answer to your Root Scan query in my previous reply

Here is my ComboFix Log, Please note I ran this prior to enabling Spybot etc to check if they were working

Hi :)

The computer is now acting fineGood to know, however we have some way to go yet to complete the malware removal process.

I haven't tried Malware Bytes as I never really used it before this infection and don't intend to from this point on.
Please see the answer to your Root Scan query in my previous reply Actually this is a excellent application and we will be using this shortly as part of the aforementioned malware removal process. I do not see it installed in the Programs and Features at all, either way a fresh download/new installation is what I will be advising.

Please see the answer to your Root Scan query in my previous reply
I have made a note of this and we will be addressing the Windows - No Disk related errors in due course. This may be have caused by malware and or something related to a software conflict too removable drives not stopped/removed safely. For the time being leave all removable storage media disconnected as they will require disinfecting. First though I wish to address the malware issues on the main installed Hard-Drive.

OK Spybot will require the TeaTimer function disabling again but due to the present location it is installed at/running from it would be best to uninstall this then re-download/install after I give the all clear. I advise you uninstall LavaSoft Adware also but that is at you own discretion and deemed a optional removal and will be highlighted in red. Mainly because it not that effective a application against todays constant evolving malware.

We will be removing a older installations of Java also as if left in place, this poses a security risk and a back-door for malware to reinfect a system.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Spybot - Search & Destroy

To do so click once on each of the below and click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Then Reboot(restart) your computer.

Upload a Suspicious File:

There is a file I would like to be checked as follows:

Note: Internet Explorer is the browser to use for best results.

Please go to VirSCAN.org (http://virscan.org/) free on-line scan service.
Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box at the top of the page:

C:\Windows\HideWin.exe

Click on the Upload button
Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply. (Ctrl & V)
Custom ComboFix Script:

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Folder::
c:\downloaded programs\Utorrent

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"CustomizeSearch"="http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) to your desktop.

Right click on mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator then follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
File submission results.
ComboFix log.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
A new HijackThis Log. <-- Remember to right click on HiJackThis.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Hi Dakeyras

Hope your good. Sorry I haven't got back to you until now, I've been away on business and had to stay overnight so I didn't have access to my desktop.

Please see the results as requested below

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?

All seems fine, in fact it seems a little faster if anything particularly when opening Firefox

Hi :)

Hope your good. Sorry I haven't got back to you until now, I've been away on business and had to stay overnight so I didn't have access to my desktop.
Fine thank you. Not a problem thank you for informing myself.

All seems fine, in fact it seems a little faster if anything particularly when opening Firefox
Good to know :bigthumb:

Next:

Please download OTMoveIT3 (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) to your Desktop.

Right click on OTMoveIt3.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Hi :)

I am fine thank you, overall the situation is looking good. I just have a few more tasks for your good self to perform.

Next:

Right click on OTMoveIt3.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:Files
C:\Users\Family\Documents\LimeWire
Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
Then click the red MoveIt! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
Close OTMoveIt3.
Flash_Disinfector For Vista:
Please download Flash_Disinfector (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Right click on Flash_Disinfector.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If you receive a prompt, please allow it.
You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Note: carry out the above for all your removable storage media and remember to remove all removable storage media afterwards safely (http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/usb-drive.htm).

When completed the above, please post back the following:

Hi Dakeyras

Bit of a problem. When I try to save Flash Disinfector to my desktop, I get the message:

C:\Users\Family\Desktop\Flash_Disinfector.exe could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred.

Try saving to a different location.

Then when I try to follow the link again another tab opens up and displays the message

File Not Found

The file http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.

* Could the item have been renamed, removed, or relocated?

* Is there a spelling, capitalisation, or other typographical error in the address?

* Do you have sufficient access permissions to the requested item?

If I then close firefox, re-open it, come back to this post and follow the link again, it opens the download box again fine, but I still get the first message, i.e. that it could not be saved.

So I have not downloaded and ran it yet, please advise.

Hi Dakeyras,

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?

Funnily enough whilst on line this morning the right click on the mouse was very very slow to respond and open the choices window (I use this to open windows in a new tab). Yet this afternoon it seemed fine.

Hi :)

Funnily enough whilst on line this morning the right click on the mouse was very very slow to respond and open the choices window (I use this to open windows in a new tab). Yet this afternoon it seemed fine.Hmm OK, if a wireless mouse check the battery's. If a PS2 mouse check for debris that may be accumulated under the button, you can also check the settings via: Start(Vista Orb) >> Control Panel >> Hardware >> Mouse.

Congratulations, your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read the below listed topic as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

What to do if your Computer is running slowly (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php)

Uninstall ComboFix:

Click on Start >> Run...
Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean up with OTMoveIt3:

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed bundled security application, Norton 360 automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

I advise you visit: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Install the Active X
Once installed it will advise set Auto-Updates if not set and you then you will be able to manually check for updates also via:
Start >> All Programs >> Microsoft Updates
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
Never open emails from unknown senders.
Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/) or Pricelessware (http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/).
Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/noscript.exe) by Symantec or Script Defender (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm) by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Note: Internet Explorer v8 has been recently released from its beta program, my advice hold off upgrading for the time being as no doubt flaws will be identified and fixes released over the coming months.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

MVPS Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
Bluetack's Hosts File (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8406)
Bluetack's Host Manager (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?autocom=faq&CODE=02&qid=16)
hpHosts (http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?s=Download).
Only use one of the above.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place? (http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4959)

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions? feel free to ask, if not stay safe!

Hi Dakeyras

Many thanks for your help, I have a couple of questions if you dont mind.

I use Firefox is this OK, and can you give me any tips to make it more secure?
Will the Host Files you list work with Firefox?
What about Spybot and Ad-Aware, should I download/use these?

Hi :)

Many thanks for your help, I have a couple of questions if you dont mind. You are very welcome and a pleasure to be of assistance!

FireFox is a fine browser and I use it myself upon occasion. Check for update periodically via:

Help >> Check for updates...
The below article is a good resource about FireFox:

How To Avoid Hacker Attacks And Make Firefox More Secure (http://www.universefirefox.com/how-to/how-to-avoid-hacker-attacks-and-make-firefox-more-secure-mini-guide)

Will the Host Files you list work with Firefox? As far as I am aware there should be no conflict with any of them. I use the MVPS Hosts File myself and have never encountered any problems when using FireFox.

What about Spybot and Ad-Aware, should I download/use these? By all means re-download/install Spybot and enable the Registry Guard(TeaTimer). No need to immunize however if using one of the custom Host Files.

Ad-Aware is at your own discretion. In my humble opinion having something installed even as a on-demand scanner only that also resides in system memory is not good at all. Having both Spybot and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware as on-demand scanners is a good enough line of defense, providing you check for updates regularly for both and perform a scan with each at least once per work.

Hi Dakeyras

Couple more questions, hope you dont mind.

What do I do with the programs listed below which we used whilst cleaning my PC?

Rooter.exe
RSIT.exe
OTMoveIt.exe

How often should I update the MVP Host file?

Now everytime I boot up, I get a message Box with a picture of a piece of paper with a magnifying glass on it in the top left hand corner, it reads:

Windows cannot open this file:

File: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk.disabled.

And asks me to make a choice of either

· Use the Web service to find the correct program
· Select a program from a list of installed programs.

I know it's something to do with my printer, I have been cancelling it and doing nothing to this point, any ideas?

Regards... Kevin

Anything not removed just delete manually and then empty the Recycle Bin.
