Requesting help with Win32.TDSS.rtk

Computer was infected with multiple trojans. Spybot was able to clean all of them except this one. I have read the sticky, backed up registry with ERUNT, and run HijackThis. I will post two HijackThis logs: one before using RootAlyzer, and one after. I used RootAlyzer according to the manual removal guide for this trojan on this site. RootAlyzer identified 5 files that were hiding. I think the main one is:

ovfsthxmyvovbac.sys

This one is always present. If it is deleted by Spybot or RootAlyzer, then on reboot the other four appear. Two of the others are are:

ovfsthxrecqlrrx.dat
ovfsthxsfhmioad.dat.

I didn't get the other two filenames. I will post the HJT logs next.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

ComboFix is still running. It has been running continuously over the last 3 days. It is not frozen. It found the trojan and deleted it. Since then it has been deleting files in the directory C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\. I think this is from an old program (uninstalled a while ago) from Norton that had some sort of super un-delete function for the Recycle Bin. Each file takes about 5 minutes to delete and apparently there are hundreds of them. I will post the requested logs when ComboFix is done. Thank you for your patience and assistance. They are much appreciated.

I have never heard of combofix running for that long, usually about 20 minutes is it's run, you may want to stop it.

I am going to let it run for now. I would like to get rid of those files anyway and I don't think it will let me delete them without ComboFix. If it freezes, I will stop it.

I stopped ComboFix on the fourth day of its running. It was still deleting the C:\Recycler\NProtect files. ComboFix did not produce a log, I guess because I stopped it. In Explorer, I was not able to access the Recycler folder, even with hidden and system files visible.

ComboFix detected rootkit activity and deleted the following 6 files which I think are all part of the same trojan in question. On reboot, the trojan activity of balloon notifications from the Quick Launch toolbar was not present.

I don't know what combofix accomplished, it did show you some of the files that have to go and it appears NProtect is keeping that from happening?
Let's go at it another way until you find out how to get rid of the NProtect junk.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

I will update those programs. Should I do that now?

McAfee Agent: I use McAfee Enterprise for my anti-virus, so I think this is part of that.

I tried to delete more of the NProtect files using information in those links. I was able to unhide the Recycler folder, but it appears that the NProtect folder is gone. Perhaps ComboFix deleted it? I made multiple different attempts with different commands and in different modes (Recovery Console, Safe Mode with Command Prompt) to unhide and delete the NProtect folder and its files, but nothing ever deleted anything. I even took control of the Recycler folder with my administrator account (using cacls command) and the folder only shows the appropriate file corresponding to the recycle bin. I can
look at the properties of the Recycler folder in Windows Explorer and it says it is only 8 KB. So I think NProtect is gone, but it would be interesting to run ComboFix again to see if it finds more files to delete. I did find one part of the Norton Systemworks 2004 program still installed (not the recycle bin part) so perhaps that is why NProtect was still there. I tried to uninstall this after running MBAM, but it said the uninstall failed and it needed the disk, so I will try this again later.

The trojan activity is now absent. After running MBAM, the ability to alter the desktop wallpaper was restored.

Ran ATF Cleaner, and MBAM, and HJT. Logs below.

I don't use two anti-virus programs, I only use McAfee. I was using one component of Norton Systemworks 2004, the Password Manager. I have uninstalled it using the program from the link you provided. It all seems to be gone: the Symantec components (the main program and updating programs) are now gone from the Add/Remove programs list in Control Panel.

I will start updating those programs. The computer is running great with no problems. All the trojan activity is gone. Here is the HJT log:

Thanks for the feedback, let's see if we can wrap up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

Update McAfee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
