View Full Version : IE Redirects to PornTube, then crashes.

Upon visiting www.e a s y i s h o p.co.uk (spaces added for safety) a few days ago AVG flashed up a virus warning. I moved it to vault where it is currently showing as: -

Infection - Virus found JS/Obfuscated C:\...Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WTABCDEZ\index[1].hmtml

Since then my IE occasionally redirects me to www.b m x o k.info (spaces added for safety - looks like PornTube) when I click search results in Google (instead of the actual destination). Then my browser crashes.

I tried to update AVG but the got the error "Access is forbidden by the server". I found http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1867#faq_1867 and did that which allowed an update, then ran a full virus scan and that came back clean.

I update Spybot S&D and ran a system check, that came back clean.

Things seemed OK but then this morning I got the YouPorn redirecection again. And my AVG now fails to update again with the same error as before.

If IE7 locks up whenever I'm restarting windows or shutting down I get an error saying AXWIN Frame can't shut down, don't know if this is related.

Using Win XP SP3 IE7.0.5730.11

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, anything else will waste your time and mine.

Nothing I recognize as malware in the HJT log, let's have a look starting like this.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks for your help.

As a side issue (don't know if it's related) since this happened I have also had 3 websites I manage have their files changed and a JS/Downloader.Agent virus added into the code. These are 3 sites that I have accessed via cPanel and/or FTP since I got the virus warning, and my server admin has told me that the passwords must have been compromised as files above the web root were changed.

Anyway, here's the logs: -

As you can see I didn't remove the last 2. Ultramon is a dual monitor app I've been using for years without any problems, and comes with mirror drivers for display. I don't think these are a problem?

For future reference, keep in mind MBAM quarantines what it removes and if a mistake is made, the item/s can be restored from within the Quarantine tab.

ATF-Cleaner should have cleaned all Temporary Internet Files, you may want to check that folder to be sure it is empty.

How is the computer running?
Not bad...a bit slow but that's due to the virus scans etc..when I pause them it's back to normal. Haven't had any google redirects in the last 24 hours. Spent yesterday restoring websites and changing passwords, I've had a read about and I'm 99.9% sure that this is Gumbar: -

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/16/20090515/ttc-gumblar-attack-explodes-across-the-w-6315470.html
http://www.pcworld.com/article/164899/new_wave_of_gumblar_hacked_sites_installs_googletargeting_malware.html
http://blog.unmaskparasites.com/2009/05/07/gumblar-cn-exploit-12-facts-about-this-injected-script/

It all seems like exactly what's happened to me, including stealing FTP passwords. Any sites I FTP'd to within the previous 2 days were infected with rogue Javascript just before the body tag.

So, assuming it is / was Gumbar, how do I check / remove?

Thanks again for your help.

I am sure the folks at MBAM do all them can to avoid removing valid files, but it happens with all malware removal programs at times. If you would like to help, you can notify those folks so they can fix that problem like this.

Open MBAM > click the More Tools tab then Report False Positive.
To submit a ticket please send an email to support@malwarebytes.org <<< click the addy to start email and briefly explain the program you are using and show the files that were removed and send it along. If they need more info, they will contact you.

I also have Adobe Acrobat 3D (7.1.0), is this safe to keep on my system?
I am not sure, not being a user, but PSI will know...or you can check with Adobe for updates.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Adobe+Acrobat+3D+&btnG=Search

Gumblar <<< that's with a L, and it is new to me. I am sure you read all the information about how to remove and prevent this and other malware in the links. Thanks for those links also.
More information: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=remove+Gumblar&btnG=Search

How is your maintenance, takes around two -three hours on my computers? Either you have a hugh amount of files or your hard drive is in bad need of maintenance, or it is damaged. You can run a free diagnostic here, if you want some free information:
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)

Delete these files (in red) manually and you may need to unhide files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp
C:\WINDOWS\qlorpbu.ida
C:\WINDOWS\tbr.dwq

So, assuming it is / was Gumbar, how do I check / remove?
You are reading about it at the same time I am.

Good information here:
http://kupika.net/random-discussion/1481-gumblar-cn-virus-k-net-infected.html

(Database 2133 Date 5/15/2009) <<< newest MBAM database, so update and run a full scan, ignore the valid files again and let me know how the computer is running at that point.

Thanks...Phil

(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)I did a separate Kaspersky scan when nothing else was running and it didn't take nearly as long (5 hours for all drives). The previous scans were done while MBAM and / or AVG were scanning, too, so took much longer. I do have a large number of small files which always makes these things more time consuming

(Database 2133 Date 5/15/2009) <<< newest MBAM database, so update and run a full scan, ignore the valid files again and let me know how the computer is running at that point.I updated MBAM yesterday (5/17/2009) to 2144 and ran a full scan, which came back clean.

A full Kasperksy scan yesterday also came back clean.

I've finally lost faith in AVG as it was running and up-to-date when this all kicked off. Looking into ESET Smart Security (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php) for 3 PCs (£44 / year) but if you have a recommendation in that price range I'd be glad to hear it :)

FYI it seems (in my experience) that Gumblar stole FTP details from unencrypted Filezilla XML config files. I had the latest Filezilla installed but only had 2 sites in my settings, all others (40+) were on another FTP client which uses encrypted configs. The 2 from Filezilla were compromised along with 2 I had connected to using my other FTP client, which makes me think it stole those details when traffic went to any ftp. address or via port 21.

For safety I changed all my FTP / cPanel passwords for websites I manage, and disabled FTP for them in cPanel. My plan is to enable, upload changes, then disable FTP again whenever a site needs to be edited - a little more work but safer given the increase in FTP stealing viruses recently. I'm also looking into limiting FTP traffic to my static IP address in future (which is actually a cPanel feature request - http://bugzilla.cpanel.net/show_bug.cgi?id=5599).

Once again, many thanks for all your help! It looks like I am virus free for now and things could have been a lot worse! :thanks:

I personally run AVG 8.5 free and firmly believe keeping security programs up to date and running them often, coupled with good online security habits have much more to do with safety than does the price of the software. If security is lacking, you are going to get infected reguardless of the antivirus program you run. Having said that, I can only suggest you search for information as I do not suggest individual subscription programs.
