Problem updating Spybot,AVG and using Internet Explorer

Hi there, just wondering if somebody give me some advice. I had AVG 7.5 until a few weeks ago until it ran out and i (stupidly) didnt get new protection for a short while. I believe i now have a virus on my computer as when i try to load WIEx the page just doesnt do anything. I deleted cookies and temp files and restarted and this allowed me to access the net and download AVG free 8.5 and Stopzilla but I cant update the files. After using the net for a short while the problem with WIEx happens again.

With AVG i get a messege saying 'server will not allow updates' and with stopzilla the update seems to just keep running. I left it to update overnight and it just kept updating with nothing happening.

I tried to follow the instructions on the 'Before you post' thread and accidently (stupidly??) downloaded Regcure rather than ERUNT and ran a scan. Since then ive downloaded and ran ERUNT and have a HJT log as below

McAfee & AVG <<< uninstall one of those completely from the computer, then restart the computer.

3) Post a new HJT log reflecting that change, add any comments you think will help. Since malware is not showing in the HJT log, please describe any symptoms and post any error message you receive word for word.

4) Any possibility these issues started with the IE8 installation?

5) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Hello Andrew, thanks for the feedback, if we are dealing with malware, you will have to download tools to remove it. Do you have another computer you can download on to bridge the tools to the infected computer?

Note:
If you have lost your Internet connection on the infected computer, or otherwise cannot post from that machine; you can download HJT to a clean PC if you have one.

Do not use a usb/external hard drive that has been connected to the infected machine to transfer media!

You can also try this if malware is blocking your access to security forums and tools. Then,

Upload HJT to infected machine

Hi Phil

Ive been trying for the last two nights but having no joy getting online unfortunatley. Msn messenger works fine so my connection is ok, and windows media player and other apps are working, if a little slowly.

Even trying to turn my computer off appears to stall and I get message boxes with a blue timer/bar going across the screen (sorry, cant remember the text) to say programs are closing down. They are programs i dont use such as AOL Dial which I believe was pre-installed on my laptop prior to purchase. Il get the exact names of these for tommorow.

I could download fixes etc to my friends laptop if required

Since we are not sure what it is, we will run a multi-purpose tool first. Be careful you don't infect your friend's computer.

combofix is 2.82 MB's in size, so make sure you have enough room on the removable media you use.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Remember to re-enable them when we're done.


Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
