View Full Version : Personal Antivirus! What the H#ll?!!

My significant other's computer has been infected with something ridiculous called Personal Antivirus. It blocks you from viewing websites by putting up a "blocked" page which says:

"Warning: visiting this site may harm your computer"

Even on this lovely Spybot S&D site, it puts up a nifty Active X-looking bar at the top that says:

"This page is infected with Malicious advertising code. Such code can seriously affect your computer. CLICK HERE to protect your computer with Personal Antivirus"

Most of us wouldn't fall for that, but unfortunately, my wife clicks on these types of things. We (you guys) just cleaned her system not long ago and I downloaded AVAST for free, but it needs to be periodically re-registered or re-enabled and I think it finally turned itself off because she won't maintain it.

Anyways, this thing virus is lame - its embedded in the task bar (and pops up with notices about worms and such), on the desktop and in the program menu, but I can't delete the folder or take it out with add/remove. But I do see it hiding in Hijack this below (PAV), but I will let the pros tell me how to handle it. Thanking you guys in advance for your help.

Subsequent to above post I ran Malwarebytes and it picked up this nasty and I deleted it (FYI - Spybot did not pick it up). I don't know if it's completely gone, but if you can look thru the updated Hijack this log below, I would appreciate it. Thanks guys.

I am not seeing malware, but you have a load of running processes I doubt you need. Those processes slow your startup, consume your resouces needlessly and slow you shutdown. Have a look here for help.

Thanks PS!

Since system appears to be running fine and you don't see any malware, I will assume all is ok.

We are having trouble re-registering with AVAST though. Don't know if any others are having this problem. The free version expired and so my wife has entered registration to get a new free version, but they never send a password. Unusual. Any suggestions? Other anti-spyware that you recommend in its place?

I will look through the other information you provided, thank you.
