Has the virus been removed?

Hi,
a few days ago Bitdefender gave a warning that we had two trojans (ntos.exe and adaptifv.exe)

Foolishly I accepted the trojan as I was unable to switch of the pc hoping to remove it later on with the antivirus.

Afterwords I used Spybot, Malwarebytes and Bitdefender to clean my computer. I discovered that I had a load of unwanted stuff on the computer, except the two programs I had initially been warned about.

After running these three security programs I thought I had removed everything. However when I switched on the computer this morning. I received a false warning telling me that connection couldn't be made with IE even though I had clicked on FF which is the browser I usually use. Seconds later I got a warning from my browser stating I was visiting a reborted attack site. The URL was of some porno website.

Am I correct in assuming the problem remains.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. thanks a million for the help so far!

I have already disconnected the pc from internet and will proceed to change all passwords asap.

I want to continue to reformat and reinstall Windows. However I have yet to find all the necessary cds etc. So I would be grateful if you could help remove the infections for now.

Also, if I proceed to backup all my essential docs onto an external harddrive what are the odds that the infection is spread as well?

I doubt there's sense trying to clean if you're going to reformat after all. So, one of those two options has to be picked.

If only docs (music, videos and pics can be too) are backuped then odds for spreading the infection shouldn't be high.

Hi,
I've done the necessary scans. I've attached the various logs to this post. As far as I know Bitdefender was not running though according to the log of Combofix it was. I hope this hasn't messed things up.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck MSN toolbar if it's offered there.



Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

Hi,
I followed all the steps mentioned. Attached are the required logs. However, I was not succesful in letting Kaspersky Online Scanner do it's work as it first stalled and crashed at 40% and the second time refused to continue past 53% even after me leaving it to run the whole day. Do you perhaps know how I could get it to work?

Two things to make Kaspersky scanner progress faster: 1) disable antivirus protection while the scanner is running 2) have hard drive(s) defragged.
