Hello,
I fear that I have a MAJOR problem on my hands. Searching the following problems that I have are what led me here.
-Google redirects.
-Cannot update any anti-virus/malware/spyware etc, programs.
-Cannot download any new anti-virus/malware/spyware etc, programs.
I am sure that there are other issues that my weary mind cannot think of at this moment.
I did have LimeWire installed, I "removed" it at least 2-3 weeks ago. Learned my lesson with P2P, not worth the saved $.
There are multiple programs installed recently that I do not want, and in hindsight, might not be safe.
These were installed to load custom ring tones onto my cell phone. Have since found out that my provider does not allow this.
This is a tough, crash lesson on internet safety. It is a shame that I chose to be ignorant of the risk I was taking by not being informed.
I have not yet disabled TeaTimer. I have run and saved with ERUNT. Here is my current HijackThis log.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
-Christine

Hi Christine,
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
Please download GooredFix (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/GooredFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so soon.
I searched around online, since I am unfamiliar with script blocking, and believe that I turned it off. There is a strong possibility that it is still on, considering all of the random "protection" programs I installed....
If I did not do this correctly, I am quite sorry for wasting your time. Could you please let me know what I would need to do to disable ALL script blocking?
So here it goes.....

Hi again
That went well since you wouldn't had been able to create log if blockers had been present :)
You seem to have both Comodo Antivirus and Avast installed there. It's recommended to have only one antivirus program installed in same system.
Uninstall COMODO SafeSurf if you didn't install it on purpose.
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log (by re-running DDS).
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Uh oh. So I tried to run ComboFix, I got as far as the first blue box where it is preparing to run.
Then...
An Error box stating the following:
-----------------------------------------------
!!Alert !! It is NOT SAFE to continue!
The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised.
Please download a fresh copy from:
http://www.b l e e p i n g c o m p u t e r.com?combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Not:You may be infected with a file patching virus (Virut)
(Ok button)
----------------------------------------
I added the above spaces in bleepingcomputer, have see it done and figured I would rather be safe than sorry.
Did some searches. Sounds bad.
Re-enabled avast.
Awaiting you advice.
Thanks.
Hi
Let's do a deeper scan.
Download the latest version of Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (ftp://downloads2.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool)
* Close all other applications and double-click and run the installer.
* When AVPTool starts, select all the scanable items except for CD-ROM drives and click the Scan button.
* If malware is detected, don't remove anything.
* After the scan finishes, don't neutralize anything.
* In the Scan window click the Reports button and select Save to file.
* Name the report AVPT.txt, and save it to the Desktop.
* Close AVPTool.
* You will be prompted if you want to uninstall the program; click Yes.
* You will then be prompted that to complete the uninstallation, the computer must be restarted. Select Yes to restart the system.
* Copy and paste the first part of the report (Detected) that you saved in your next reply. Do not include the longer list marked Events.

Hi again,
Let's try ComboFix again.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Download Combofix*from any of the links below. You must*rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Double click on Combo-Fix.exe*& follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a fresh dds.txt log so we can continue cleaning the system.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Again sorry for the delay, I am dealing with my dog, emergency vet appointments etc... Other wise I would be able to stay on top of this.
I tried to run ComboFix again, it downloaded fine the first time, followed all the instructions, including renaming it, and got stopped at the same point.
If I click on the X to close the error box, then ComboFix stays on my desktop. If I click on the "OK" button in the error box, the box closes and the ComboFix icon on my desktop "disappears."
I tried to download it a few different times, from the sites linked, it would not download, and almost froze my computer. I could move the mouse and try to close the windows, or cancel the not-loading-download, but none of it worked. I also could not use the taskmaster to close anything. I eventually turned the computer off at the power strip....Not ideal.
Just now, when I opened Firefox, one of the downloads started and finished again. No prompt from me. My Avast is also saying it has been updated. I have not tried to update anything since starting this thread, so it did it on its own....
I did turn off all my anti-virus and firewalls before running ComboFix. Earlier I turned them back on and Comodo is telling me that ComboFix is malware.... I am going to try turning them off before the download...
Not sure what all this means, I will try ComboFix again right now.
Thank again!

Whew, thank you! :bighug:
Hi Christine
As I told you before, you should uninstall either Comodo Antivirus or Avast. Multiple antivirus programs decrease system performance and may also cause other kind of weird symptoms.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

The ComboFix log....Well the first time I ran it and hit save, I then was uninstalling Jave, the computer,um, half froze. The saved file on my desktop was no longer there. I ran ComboFix again....Saved that second file. When I clicked the icon to run it, I got an error box telling me I could not save it as Combo-Fix and to rename it. As far as the computer, I could still do things, but not cancel the uninstall,or close the add remove programs menu. I could do all the things I needed to shut down, but the computer never did shut down. I had to turn off the power strip...
Here is the second ComboFix log:

The computer is acting much better, I am not having any redirects, some pages I am not able to view the pictures and over all look different.
I tried to view more smiles and that window that popped up and loaded earlier does not appear anymore, the screen jumps to the top.
Other wise everything is much better/faster.
Thank you.
Hi
Kaspersky findings can be ignored.

Please clear browser cache (instructions (http://www.groovypost.com/howto/security/clear-firefox-browsing-history-and-private-data/)). Then see if those pages appear correctly :)

Yes, yes, much better! Thank you so very much.
I am so grateful that out there, in this vast internet world, there are people like yourself, who are willing to take their time and energy to help a stranger out...
(If you can't tell it has been a rough day.)
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type "c:\documents and settings\Phillip Pinson\Desktop\9876.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK
Click Start >> Run and then copy/paste the following into the box and hit Enter:
"%userprofile%\Desktop\GooredFix.exe" /uninstall
If any of your security programs query a new Registry/AutoStart value being added please allow the changes.
You may also delete dds.scr file and related logs now.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

Hi there, :greeting: I am very sorry to have not posted back. I ended up with a used Mac, the threats, so far, are much less. I have not been back on the pc since. I still plan on using it, and so I will be hooking it up this next week.
I will follow all your directions, they have been very clear and easy to understand.
The computer works wonderfully. Thinking that I might have, through my ignorance, compromised my system and my online safety, whew! Scary.
I can post back and let you and others know how it all worked out.
Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Someday, when I have a job again, I won't forget this. For now I send all the internet helpers my thanks and wishes for health and happiness!
(I'll be around, didn't want to get archived just yet.)
:wav:
You're welcome :) I'll keep the topic a few more days open.
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help. :)
Note:If it has been four days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.
If it has been less than four days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or MOD a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
