Dear Spybot team,

I have been unable to remove this infection, I believe I got this infection from stupidly downloading and installing this "Vplayer" application from a pornographic site (huge mistake obviously to download anything from a porn site, which I knew but now that I have had to pay the consequence with this Trojan infection, it is something I will NEVER do again!). I promptly uninstalled the application after it did not work. I suspect this because the log files from the program that I downloaded from c-net.com "Ashampoo anti spyware 2" I have used several programs to try and remove it but I cannot. As a last ditch attempt to fix the problem I went into system 32 in windows explorer and deleted suspicious files which had characters like "notavirus" and "trojandownloader" contained inside the file name. Deleting those files did NOT fix the problem. It probably was a bit of a risk to try and do that, but I have just been so frustrated over this.

After doing some research I found that this must be a rootkit infection and going in system 32 only confirmed this as there were HUNDREDS of files with suspicious names. My firewall (Zone Alarm Extreme Security) has continuiously detected a file entitled " C:\Windows\System32\gxvxcpvegeudqbpbiyjbfsmqpsecucstodwjp.dll" when it runs an automatic "On-Access" scan when I go to start firefox or internet explorer. At first, Zone would go and quarantine the file, now it says it cannot quarantine or rename the file, and when it goes to delete the file under the action taken it says "deleting..." then quickly you can see "error" before it then says "deleted". When I did an ultra deep virus scan, and a deep inspection spyware scan nothing was found but a few objects of "Low" significance. I also have had issues installing spybot (I tried several times), in which my system would blue screen and do a memory dump towards the end of the installation, which, then messed up the install. This memory dump occurs several times per day, and is obviously quite aggravating, I am not sure if it is due to my low ram (1GB which I hear is on the low side for Vista) or if it is due to the infection. I assume it must be both, but I never had this issue before the trojan so I assume it is due to the trojan. Also, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and AdAware will not launch. As mentioned in the first paragraph of this post, I was able to search around c-net.com downloads and found a program named "Ashampoo Anti Spyware 2" which had also detected the trojan and quarantined the item but it still apparently has not worked because the on-access scan continues to run and detect the trojan upon launching Firefox or internet explorer. I was having a lot of browser redirects, but was able to stop this after several virus and spyware scans. I tried running the "rootkit buster" program but was unable to get this to work either. Below is the log file from Hijack This:

Hi again,

That looks better :)

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.

You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run

Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives

Click on My Computer under Scan.

Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.

Click on Save Report As....

Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Save this report to a convenient place.

Copy and paste that information & a fresh hjt log into your topic. How's the system running?

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

Blade 81,

I have completed the tasks you requested from me. The system seemed to run well after I ran the scan Thursday night, but starting Friday the system had an extremely slow boot. Today, before I had gotten to doing the steps you requested of me, Zone Alarm did an on-access scan and found two trojan downloaders in the same location I gave you when i first posted. I selected delete and zone appeared to have deleted them but I still noticed my system being a bit sluggish and I noticed that even when i wasnt using the laptop the light saying that the computer is busy or in use (functioning) for example, when you install a program the "busy" light is flashing all the time. Except, in my case, the light is on even when I was not performing any tasks. One thing I forgot to mention last night is that I had a great difficulty in shutting down zone alarm, I had to manually turn off my firewall by unchecking anti virus and spyware protection and firewall protection which I had to shut off as instructed to run the combofix application. I was able to shut it off however, but zone alarm locks up when I try to right click the tray icon to hit "shutdown firewall". I also had a bit of a lock up today as well when trying to do this, so again I had to manually turn of antivirus and spyware protection for the kaspersky scan to work. Here are the results of the reports you requested:

Hi

Part of hjt log is missing. Could you post a complete one, please?

Apologies that the log got cut off. System seems to be running a bit better today, zone alarm hasn't detected anything. Zone is doing an automatic virus/spyware check right now so I will see what happens, usually only the on-access scan finds the trojan downloader however. Rootkits tend to be hidden from what I understand so even though it dose not find it, it still could be active.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type "c:\users\Mike\Downloads\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade
