When a friend returned my laptop, it was infected. Although I use Firefox as my browser, when connected to the internet, the system will automatically launch IE and then try to go to various porn or other sites. I'm unable to use system restore - it will cycle through the entire process but then simply note that the restore has failed. It doesn't seem to matter which restore point I use. The system also operates very slowly now. I should note that the problem doesn't occur immediately on launching Firefox.

I've run Erunt. This is the Hijack log. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi folarr

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Ugh - thank you for the advice. The computer has been disconnected from the network almost consistently since I first discovered the situation. I say almost because it took a little time to understand that the system was infected and I tried initially to download virus elimination programs from that system, before moving to a new one and using a flash drive to transfer the programs to the infected computer. Nothing particularly sensitive is on the infected computer.

I have two questions. First, when connected to the Internet (wirelessly), the computer was part of a home network system that requires a password. Is that system in jeopardy (I will be changing the password)? Are the other computers, which do have personal financial information on them, in jeopardy?

Second, my preference is to reformat the computer. But I'd purchased the computer used from work and I do not have the original OS software on a disc. Will that be necessary? I assume I can't use the OS disc that came with the computer I'm using now (both Windows XP) because of validation issues.

Thanks.

1. I recommend to change password of home network and all online passwords used in that computer.

2. I should be able to use it as long as you have legit product key.

Thanks again. I've changed home network password we're working on on-line passwords. As for OS disk does it matter that it's for a Dell and the laptop is Lenovo (I suspect not, but want to be certain).

It can matter but I doubt it.
