View Full Version : Computer infected

About a month and a half ago, I was working with Blade81 on getting rid of some malware. We got it mostly cleaned up, and I went out of town for work without being able to complete. I just got home and found a serious problem on the computer. My desktop has huge red letters stating that the computer is infected with spyware and that I must clean it immeadiately. Problem is, I can't run Spybot, Adware, Malwarebytes or HJT. Every couple of minutes, a new website pops up (some not so cool for my kids to see). I am at a complete loss on what to do. Please help.

Thanks,

David

Hi Dburnell

Please rename HijackThis.exe and tell me if you can run it now.

Hi Shaba,

I tried renaming HJT and it still would not run. I get a brief flicker of a window, and then it disappears. I have since tried to run other programs, and I get the same thing. This malware overrides all programs and won't let the windows show on the screen. I can't even use "cntrl-alt-delete" to see what is running. Some basic Windows sceens will come up (IE, Windows Explorer, My Computer and Control Panel).

I have a new icon on my desktop labeled "Security System 2009". It has an orange and black stripped shield as the icon. It points to "c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\14719374\14719374". I can't get to folder "14719374" with Windows Explorer. I assume that its attribute is "hidden" and I have forgotten how to display hidden files.

In addition to new Internet Explorer windows popping up, I get a pop-up that says my new Security System 2009 has found "TrojanSPM/LX", and I should install "IDS Software" immeadiately. Another popup says that "Lsas.Blaster.Keylogger" is trying to send my credit card info to a remote website.

This Security System 2009 malware has caused the computer to Blue Screen a couple of times due to "NTFS.SYS". I did not have time to write down the codes at the bottom before auto restart. On bootup, I briefly get what I think is a real window titled "Data Execution Prevention" that says windows has shutdown "Boot Acceptance Application For Registry". This window then disappears behind my wonderful new desktop with the big red WARNING information.

I don't know if all this info is helpful or not. I have not tried starting the computer in Safe-Mode, mainly because I wouldn't know what to look for there anyways.

Any guidance and assistance that you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Hurrah! I was able to run HJT in Safe-Mode! Attached is the log. I hope it has the info that you need.

Thanks,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post

Shaba,

Bad news indeed, but thank you for the help. I disconnected the computer from the internet last night. We are in the process of canceling/replacing our credit cards and changing passwords for our online banking accounts. Tomorrow, I will talk to our bank about closing these accounts and what to do about any outstanding checks that we have written recently.

I think that I would like to try to clean up my computer so that I can more easily retreave pictures, music, etc, before I reformat. As it stands now, I cannot run any of my programs.

Thanks again,

David

Then please let me know if you can do this in safe mode:

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

File::
C:\qkeyge.exe
C:\elvjsd.exe
C:\kortcale.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Empty this folder:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

Shaba,

Everything seems to running properly now. By the way, what program is Qoobox associated with? It seemed that the creation or modified dates all of the files in it ranged from 4/09 until present. It had several logs in it as well as some "submission" (or "submitted") files in it. Is this folder OK or was it installed by some malware program?

The link that you attached for OTCleanIt gives me "error 404 - Not Found". Did they move this?
