Hi All,
First, thank you for having spent all the time and effort in helping me, in the past. This time I am writing to you because something is occurring with my niece's computer.
She is running an HP laptop with a Pentium M. She has MS XP Pro SP3.
My niece came to me when she kept getting all sorts of messages, including a "Personal Anti Virus" program display. She was smart enough to not fall for that.
Along with that, there were several warnings that she had a virus from FormSpy, etc.., plus a virus attached to both her Acrobat reader, and a flash add-on for her IE. When I tried to use her IE to go to sites, I got blocked. Luckily, she has Safari, which allowed me to update her AVG, AdAware AE, and SB S&D.
I ran those programs and first found nothing. On running them a second time, Spybot found one of the incarnations of the PAV virus and got rid of it. I then ran the system through Kaspersky's online scanner. That came up with nothing.
Since I was rebooting the system, and I knew that many programs attach themselves to the Restore file, I disabled the Restore function.
The last time I rebooted, I chose to use Safari as the default browser. This allowed me to locate and delete the PAV files, which I found using the search facilities of MS Win. I then ran the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs again, and came up clean.
When I again rebooted, I tried using the IE. I got weird actions on a site I usually use. That told me something was quite wrong. I then installed and ran "HijackThis." The log file is below.
Please note, the Restore feature is still off.

If you still want help we will start the removal process like this.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Hi Phil,
Thank you for your fast reply. Once I have done all, I will upload the things you want.
I found out a few possible ways my niece got that crap into her system:
1) She thought she is supposed to run the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs everytime she updates them, because that is how her father, my brother does it;
2) She uses AOL mail and AIM;
3) And, she uses certain movie sites to view movies, etc.
On the good is her not opening unknown attachments and E-Mail.
As said, just a little info, in the event any of the sites she uses might be known to harbor malware.

As instructed, I downloaded, installed, updated, and ran MBAM; and, followed all its instructions. I saved the log file.
I then ran HijackThis and saved its log file. Then I saved the "Uninstall List."

Sometime removing the malware restores that function, sometimes it takes more work. Just don't let me close the topic until it is working right.

Hello Phil,
As requested, I have done what you suggested. I will have the new HJT log at the end of this note.
I am convinced that, not only are you correct about AOL placing software on computers which are not needed, but, as long as you are using ANY of their software, those programs are written to also check to see that you have installed ALL the software AOL wants you to have! Thus, should you eliminate any truly unneeded program (not even needed by and for use with AOL stuff), you will get a message that you need to download and install that program. This is just one reason I am against the use of AOL. Another reason is their not fully deleting files they upload to the user, to use in the installation of programs and other files, thus eventually destroying an harddisk drive's ability to function, or even to be properly reformatted.
Since my niece is the one who must test out the computer, we will have to wait until she comes by my place to pick up her computer. I will report it back to you.
I intend to place Partition Magic v. 8 on her computer, to create a boot partition; a partition which would get the browsers' cookies and histories, and downloaded programs; and a partition to contain those programs which are not necessary in running the computer, like office suites and games. I also have instructed her to place all her created data onto a removable drive, like a pendrive. This way, should she again get a virus or other malware, the chances are only her boot partition will be infected. In that case, should a reformat be needed, only that partition would need reformatting and reinstalling.

I had to manually activate the "System Restore" feature, which went smoothly. I did this after rebooting and doing the HJT test, and then rebooting again.
Thank you, also, for telling me how you go about checking for files which do not belong (potential malware). I now have an idea of how to use HJT to check for such items. This allows me to be more helpful for myself, for my friends, and for my clients. It also allows me to be able to give a more educated request to experts as yourself.

You still have Viewpoint showing is this: Scan saved at 3:01:16 PM, on 5/30/2009 HJT log. If you have run the uninstaller and it did not remove it, follow these directions. Though I do not allow aol anything on my computer, you should be able to run AIM without installing it. It is very important that the EULA is read carefully before any installation, even updates. Legally, they do have to tell you what they are going to install, but few folks take the time to read that information and opt out.
1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
2) Open Task Manager:

then under the Processes tab, End Process on this item:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
3) Navigate to this folder in red and make sure it has been deleted.

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

Hello Phil,
I followed your advice. I even got rid of Viewpoint, totally. I used the Add/Remove Programs facility in the Control Panel.
The result of all was to have a nicely running computer. In fact, I have installed "Partition Magic" v. 8, to be able to create partitions for my niece's benefit. I created a small (5 gig) partition to place all the temporary internet files (cookies, etc.) and needed downloads. I also created a large partition to house her regular programs which do not demand to be in the C: drive/partition.

I do have a general question (not directly connected with this thread), and a comment.
First. Other than the prior Java updates (Java, JTE, etc.) which I know can be deleted, without adverse effects, are there any other listings of updates, which I see in the Add/Delete lisiting, that I can also delete? It would be nice to get rid of junk.
Second (This is more of a warning). If you have not installed IE 8, do not do it. It cludges up the system. I do not know why it is slowing everything down, when other programs start up, but it does -- even when IE, itself is starting up.
And, then there is the URL bar, which when you click on that down-facing arrow to get the listing of the last set of sites visited, you only find out that there is now a delete gadget almost in the middle of each line. What makes this bad is that the gadget only shows itself as the mouse pointer is on the line that has that past URL. So, as you think you are clicking on that URL, to automatically load into the URL bar, you are actually deleting that URL from the listing!
The only reason I have not gone back to version 7 is because I figure MS will figure out the screw ups and put forth a fix. Unfortunately, they have not done so yet.

If you are asking about the uninstall list, you can uninstall anything you wish, depends on what she uses and needs. For instance, most OEM installations include QuickTime, RealPlay and Windows Media player, sometimes more. I use WMP11 so I remove the others as soon as the computer comes out of the box. OEM installers get $$ for including the junk.
