View Full Version : Trojan.BHO help!
happylove
2009-05-27, 01:02
Hello, I recently found Trojan.BHO with Malwarebytes and had it quarantined. My computer is running very slow and the only thing I installed recently (and since removed) is "Hotboxalbum" program that came with my new Casio digital camera, because it seems to be running slow after I installed that. I can't restore to a previous date, even though the option is there.
Here is my HJT log: any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806
We will start our search for the reason for these problems like this.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together
(No need to download if you still have MBAM, make sure you update the program and run it as directed)
2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
Tutorial if needed:

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Please read the directions carefully:
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Flash Player ActiveX <<< check this
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <<< VERY OLD
Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< this tool will help if that old version is hard to uninstall
I can't restore to a previous date, even though the option is there.
I need more information, what message do you get when you try to use System Restore.
I would like to look at the results of a free diagnostic report here:
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)
Post the information I requested, a link to the diagnostic report and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help.
Thanks...Phil

Oh my gosh, what a time I've had! I updated my Adobe, then had problems installing the new Java, which I finally got. Then had trouble trying to run the pcpitstop, had to install Neptune (?), but finally was able to run it in IE instead of Firefox. I'm not sure about this, but here is the link to the results, as you requested: http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22181999
Can In uninstall Neptune?
When I tried to restore to previous date, I was able to select a variety of dates, but then after reboot, it said that it was unable to restore to previous date and no changes were made.
By the way, I think I still have issues, but my computer seems to be running somewhat faster. My NAV runs out in 3 days and I'm considering a different AV, have you any suggestions? As always, I appreciate your expertise!
Here is my new HJT Log:

had to install Neptune (?),
I don't know what that is, can you show me a link to it. In many times of using this diagnostic, you are the first to say you "had to install Neptune"
Have you looked at the Recommended Fixes yet, each of those links has information that explains their suggested fix. You have many performance issues to address including stuff like having
739 MB MB's of junk stored in your Recycle Bin. You will need to work through issue by issue but you can bet that and the amount of RAM you have on board is not helping the computer's speed.
Memory Installed 512 MBs <<< while Windows may run on this much RAM, that is all it will do, and that will not support any resource intence games or multiple programs running at the same time, see the information I posted earlier about RAM.
Click through each of the tabs, information to help you learn about your computer is there.
As you progress you can rerun the diagnostic report to see the improvement and PCPitStop wil retain a recond of the tests to refer back to if needed.
While I remove malware, I will be glad to help with questions if we are working together, and you can also get free help here:
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=6
or here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3
Systen Restore <<< see this information from the diagnostic report.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/tips/TipRestore.asp?conid=22181999
Where you should be using about 3% (1696 MB) of Disk space, you are using 11569 MB's, much more than is suggested and that might be your problem.
My NAV runs out in 3 days and I'm considering a different AV, have you any suggestions? As always, I appreciate your expertise!
I personally run AVG 8.5 free from Grisoft and make a point of not comparing paid subscription programs, but Google does.

Let's do some cleaning, this will also empty the Recycle Bin if you have not.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(the HP redirects are not malware, but are not needed)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
Let me know how the computer is running.
Thanks
This information will help your computer run better if applied. Some may repeat what PcPitStop has said.

By the way, I think I still have issues
The scans are not showing malware and while something could be hidden, I personally believe maintenance is your problem. When was the last time you ran scandisk to look for errors, defragged the computer? When did you last open the cabinet to blow the dust out of the fans, etc.?

Hi Phil, here is the link for Neptune: http://www.meadroid.com/neptune/index.htm I think the reason I installed it was because I was running Firefox instead of IE. I ended up using IE, so I'm going to uninstall Neptune (it is a plug in).
I haven't checked all of the issues yet, but I'm going to do that. I did the recommended fixes in Secunia, except for one that states I have a newer one installed (Adobe Acrobat Reader 4x). Should I remove this? It keeps showing up on my
I just emptied the recycle bin, the items in there were from the last few days, as I do regularly empty it. I also recently did a defrag even though the analysis said it didn't need it. I also did run scandisk recently. I had my computer "in the shop" within the past year, so it was "dusted" then.
My NAV expired and I removed it an installed AVG 8.5 (thank you).
Here is my latest log:

Adobe Reader 9.1 <<< according to the uninstall list, you have the newest version of Adobe Reader, here is more information:

(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
http://www.meadroid.com/neptune/index.htm <<< that's new to me, never saw it before and know nothing about it.
(Adobe Acrobat Reader 4x). <<< I don't see this in the uninstall list, I would read the information I just posted about the newest version. If that does not answer your questions, ask here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/reader/
MBAM scan looks clean, could I look at a AVG scan, these instructions may vary slightly since they are for 8.0.
* Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
* Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
* Close results and close the Interface.
* Copy and paste the contents of that file unless it is clean.
Post a fresh HJT log also.
Thanks...Phil

The HJT log is showing Norton/Symntec programs running which should not be if you are going to run AVG 8.5, see this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

Post a new uninstall list so I can see what is there.
No infection was found during this scan <<< AVG scan
Please describe any issues you are having.
Thanks

Hi Phil, I'm surprised to hear that Norton is still showing, because I removed it in the Add/Remove program. I did see a couple of Symantec technical programs yesterday that I also removed via Add/Remove. What else can I do to be sure it's gone?
You asked for an install list, but I don't see how to post the log from the Secunia program. Here is a new HJT list, does this help? I'm running alot faster than I used to, but I want to be sure everything is removed that should be. As always, thanks for your help!

I wish to make sure there is no uninstaller for any of those and nothing there you are using for any reason. Post the uninstall list just as you did before.
Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Make sure you review this information I posted earlier, I see many programs running I don't think you need everytime you boot including Secunia PSI:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
Remember that any program can be started via Start > All Programs if needed. For instance, I have four programs checked in MSConfig, two are my Antivirus, one is my firewall and the other is Windows Live Messenger that I use a lot.
Thanks

My apologies, I forgot about the uninstall list in HJT. It is attached. I do remember your comment about the Secunia and removing it from the start list. I planned do that, but haven't yet. I know I don't need Java and Quicktime. I will remove those from start up as well. If there are more, please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the uninstall list. I suggest you look closely at each item and ask yourself if you use the program, if not do your computer a favor and uninstall it. I will comment on only what I see.
LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation
Uninstall these and then we can see if all Symantec is gone from the HJT log.
QuickTime
RealPlayer
This is just a for instance for you. I personally do not use these players (you may) I use Windows Media Player 11, so I uninstall other players as soon as I take the computer out of the box.
but I want to be sure everything is removed that should be.
The nice thing about that is it's your computer so you get to choose what is installed on it. Be careful not to remove any security or Windows stuff, use Google to find out what stuff is if you are not sure. Here are good research tools.
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Post a new HJT log once you have finished and I will take a last look. Let me know about any issues.
Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil, I removed Live Updates via add/remove. My new log is below. I did take the quicktime and secunia from my start up.
I do have one issue: When I opened my firefox browser, I got a warning about a backdoor trojan. I hit the "heal" button from the AVG option. I'm kind of concerned about that. It takes a long time to run the AVG scan, so I'm going to do that in the morning while getting ready for work. I am going to run a quick scan via Malwarebytes and then shut down for the night. Hopefully there isn't something new (and bad) going on here. Thank you!

I do have one issue: When I opened my firefox browser, I got a warning about a backdoor trojan. I hit the "heal" button from the AVG option.
I need more information, what is the name and location of this "backdoor trojan" Did you check to see if AVG moved it to the Virus Vault?
Open AVG interface > History > Virus Vault. If there are infected files there, Empty the Vault.
What happens when you open Internet Explorer?
Let's have a look at Firefox plugins:
Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click
Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.
Thanks

Thanks Phil. The infection is a Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic22.TDY and it is in the virus vault. It's location is C:\\WINDOWS\system32\igfxcfg.exe.
When I open internet explorer, it now takes some time and I've also gotten some "connection interrupted" notices.
I will empty the virus vault and do the steps that you advised me to do (without doing step 2). Thanks.

I'm sorry, but where do I find Gooridfix?

Joyce, that file AVG removed may be a false positive? See if you can scan the file with one of these tools before you delete it: C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxcfg.exe
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
Here is the Google on the file:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=igfxcfg.exe&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
It might also be in the Recycle Bin if you removed it. It may be infected but it also appears to might belong to Intel.
Programs do make mistakes, that's why they move stuff to the VirusVault first.

Hi Phil, I deleted the vault this morning, from how I read your reply, that's what I was supposed to to. I looked for the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxcfg.exe and it wasn't there. My computer is running slow again like when I first contacted you. It was fine for several days but now it's very slow again. I haven't downloaded anything other that what you instructed me to do, so I don't understand what could have caused this.
My Goodred fix log is below.

Please delete GooredFix from the computer, it did not find anything. Post a new HJT log.

Just so I'm clear, I am not choosing option 2, but actually deleting the application Gooredfix?

Yes Joyce, delete Gooredfix, the program did not find any infected Firefox plugins so there is no reason to run it.
I see no malware in the HJT log, please update your disagnostic report at PCPitStop and post a link.
I do see running processes that are likely not needed daily. Remember, not only do those programs slow your startup and shutdown, but they use resources as they run if you use them or not. With only 512 MB's of RAM, you have nothing to waste.
You need to look at each Running process in MSConfig and uncheck them. http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
Please also run the free deepscan to look for anything that may have been missed.
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post
Thanks

You need to correct the problems mentioned in this link:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22187170
Four are directly related to computer performance and four are out of date drivers which can cause the same poblems. I can not do this for you. If I have not pointed to these links, I will do so again:
Help with the test results:
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=6
Help with XP problems:

The Kaspersky result:

Let's also run one more tool to see what it might locate.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Would you recommend purchasing PC Pitstop Optimize to do these tasks? I tried to do the first task "change internet buffer" and when doing the step by step instructions, trying to create a new DWORD Value, nothing happens. I realize there is a cost for this, but if it will do these corrections for me, I think I may want to do that rather than manually, since there are alot of things to fix.
Thanks.

This is what I posted with the first PCPitStop link:
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)
I personally consider optimizers a waste of money. A computer that is well maintained, has enough RAM and is free of malware should run fine without them. However, it is your computer, I remove malware and it is fairly obvious you have problems way beyond malware that I do not usually work with. I think you should look over all of the links I provided for helping with a slow computer to make sure you missed nothing. Such as in the case of the items in the diagnostic report that were not resolved.
If you can't do the first task without help, move on to the others and see how the computer runs when you are finished. Personally I would rather see you put in additioanal RAM than waste $$$ on questionable programs.
Post the log from combofix when you have it.

Phil, I am about to run Combofix but it's telling me that my AVG scanner is active. I don't know how to disable that. I did "exit" from the icon tray but apparently I need to do something else. How do I do that?
Also, from the PCPitstop, I tried to update the drivers that is suggested, but two of them said that I already had the latest update and did not install the update. As far as performance, I defragged but it's still telling me I need to defrag (?).
I will wait for your reply regarding disabling the AVG scanner before gong any further with Combofix. Thanks.

Thanks for the combofix log, it did find some junk, don't know if that helped you?
PCPitstop: Post a fresh diagnostic report and I will see if I can help with any remaining issues.
Has scan disk been run on this computer? When it runs, the computer can not be used as the utility needs complete contoll over the computer. It is best to set it up before you shut down at night, then it will run first thing in the morning and may take a couple of hours.
Open MyComputer then RIGHT click the C drive and choose Properties. Choose TOOLS then Error-checking. Here is more information about this utility.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
I can not say this will help, but it will not hurt. If there are problems on the Hard Disk, it may correct them.
Post a fresh HijackThis log with the diagnostic link.
Thanks

Hi Phil, here is the new Pcpitstop log: I do want to point out that I previously took care of the craplets (there were 4 before), I defragged, I changed the internet buffer. They are now showing up again, could this be because of the Combofix? I had to set up my outlook express email again after running that and then I received 298 messages that were duplicates of previous emails! (this has happened before).
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22237231
Scan Disk, not sure about that, but I did what you instructed and will set it up to run when I reboot, which I am going to do now.
Here is my new HJT log:

I have been at the logs since 4 AM EST and I am burned out, I will look at the newest information in the AM. Give me some feedback about performance once scandisk has been run.
Thanks...Phil

I understand.
I ran it after reboot, it didn't take long. No better, as a matter of fact, probably worse. I am getting errors about pages being interrupted when loading and some of my graphics don't load, so I have to "show image" to get them to load. I use excite.com for my home page, and when it loaded it told me I need to install flash 8 (or something like that) to view videos.
Here is a new HJT log, just in case.

Thanks for that feedback, the errors indicate that you may need to repair or reinstall the operating system. We are moving into an area that I am not familiar with and would prefer that you move to a free forum that can help with Windows XP issues. Here are two good free forums, but post only at one.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-XP-2000-2003-NT-f5.html
Wish I could help more, but either forum has excellant folks who deal with XP issues.
You may certainly link them to this topic so they can see what we tried.
Thanks

If you have not removed combofix, please do so.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
