Here are the symptoms:

I can't run Spybot, Malwarebytes, Spywaredoctor, etc.
I tried to install Hijack This but when I clicked install nothing happens.
Windows System Restore restore points have all been removed.
Acer eRecovery fails.
When I try to go to certain websites, I am redirected to other websites with ads.
Some of peripherals (external DVD burner for example) show as working correctly but burning software doesn't find them.

All of the above happens whether I am in normal or safe mode.

AVG found one virus and quarantined it (FakeAlert) but the problems persist.

The biggest problem is that I can't identify the virus in order to remove it and Hijack This won't install.

The virus also installed itself on my external hard drive.

Any help would be much appreciated. :bigthumb:

Hello Mike

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

See if you can run this, you may have to download it to a known clean computer and transfer it by CD to the infected one.

Download OTListIt2 (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTListIt2.exe)to your desktop.

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your topic.

If it has been four days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a new HijackThis log with a link to your previous thread. Please do not add any logs that might have been requested in the closed topic, you would be starting fresh.
