I have a friends computer that previously has some spyware found. This wass corrected and worked fine for several weeks. Today we lost all the desktop icons and taskbar. We used Windows task manager to start iexplore.exe to be able to execute both a virus scan and malware scan. The machine was infected with some viruses that Symantec detected and spyware that malwarebytes detected. We removed the viruses and spyware and was asked to re-boot the machine to fix the rest of the items. Upon re-boot a Windows screen appears to select the user to sign on the machine but when you click on the user name the machine does a logoff and shuts down instead of proceeding to the desktop in normal mode and Safe Mode. The administrator account does the same thing. What can I do to hopefully resolve this quickly? Would it help if I took the hard drive out of the infected machine and ran a virus scan and malware scan on the drive as a USB attached device on a working computer?

Window XP. I have the OS disk. The malware log file showed I had a Hijack.Userinit and deleted this file. I was able to get to the Recovery console and entered the following to be able to get signed onto the machine. Expand E:\i386\userinit.ex_ c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe I then ran a virus scan and a malware scan. I used ATF cleaner to delete temp files as I saw a Packed.Generic.225 virus in APQ2A.tmp. Below is the curent Hijack log file. Machine is a little slow to boot but seems to work okay.

Download the latest version of Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool
* Close all other applications and double-click and run the installer.
* When AVPTool starts, select all the scanable items except for CD-ROM drives and click the Scan button.
* If malware is detected, don't remove anything.
* After the scan finishes, don't neutralize anything.
* In the Scan window click the Reports button and select Save to file.
* Name the report AVPT.txt, and save it to the Desktop.
* Close AVPTool.
* You will be prompted if you want to uninstall the program; click Yes.
* You will then be prompted that to complete the uninstallation, the computer must be restarted. Select Yes to restart the system.
* Copy and paste the first part of the report (Detected) that you saved in your next reply. Do not include the longer list marked Events.

The scan results as requested. I believe the friend clicked on a .zip file that was sent in an email as a Postmaster tracking attachment that had a virus and started the problems with the computer.
