View Full Version : Malware problem - web redirects/etc
Hi guys
My wife's PC is redirecting both Firefox and IE on attempts to visit a wide range of sites, especially any of the anti-virus stuff. It redirects via "google-redirect.com" and "homesearchtulsa.com". It also is interfering with things like setting desktop background(?? why!), and installing - I copied downloads for spybot, spydoctor, adaware across on a memory stick but in normal mode I could not run/install any of them, it simply hung when I tried.
The PC also blue-screened twice, which it has never done before.
In safe mode I was able to install the 3 named above, but spybot can't download its updates in safe mode, and seems blocked from doing so in normal mode. Spydoctor 'recognises' several high-threat-level trojan related items, but won't give details or try to remove them without a registration fee (among other things, not willing to type card details into a PC that seems this compromised...!).
I am going to go back now and try to get HJT going via safemode and back in, and will post any results here. Any initial advice?
Thanks!
Any advice appreciated - ran Anti-Malware in safe mode and ID'ed 5 high-threat items, removed them, ran it again in normal and found 1 high threat, removed it, however there is clearly still something wrong; e.g. AdAware won't install, and e.g. Spybot won't download updates - when I tried to run the zip update package the machine reboots. However at least for now the webpage redirection seems to have stopped.

* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

MBAM shows nothing but one infected System Restore file that we will clean soon.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX <<< out of date and unsafe
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html
Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2009/04/update_on_adobe_reader_issue.html
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
All out of date and unsafe:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.

Viewpoint Media Player
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Have a look at this information:
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll

http://www.geekstogo.com/2008/07/19/adyieldmanagercom-results-when-trying-to-check-yahoo-mail/
I suggest we do some cleaning, like this:
View all files and folders for this Operating System:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\Program Files\BAE <<< delete that folder if there
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
How is the computer running, please describe any malware issues.
Thanks
Thanks again. I performed the cleaning fixes you listed, and I'll work my way through the less-than-safe installations and updating items where appropriate next.
The malware-type PC issues (still happening now) are - most or all Control Panel options won't open dialogue boxes after selecting, i.e. I can't click through to Display Properties, or System, or Security Center, etc. After spending a few minutes trying, the machine blue-screened.
Browser redirecting has possibly stopped. The machine 'feels slow'.

Thanks for the assistance, very much appreciated.

I would appreciate it if you would follow the directions to run this free diagnostic scan and post the results first.
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)
The malware-type PC issues (still happening now) are - most or all Control Panel options won't open dialogue boxes after selecting, i.e. I can't click through to Display Properties, or System, or Security Center, etc. After spending a few minutes trying, the machine blue-screened.
Can you tell me about any error messages occuring with those symptoms? It's possible there may be one more files that are corrupt of even missing, please follow the directions in this link to run System File Checker:
http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/
You have a lot of running processes that are likely not needed at every boot, like SUPERAntiSpyware which I suggest you uninstall unless you purchased it. Not a bad program, but uses resources.

I do not need to see that log...thanks
Recap: Post the link to the diagnostic report at PCPitStop and any error messages you are receiving.
Thanks
Not sure if this is the right link - testing -

In general, no error messages with the symptoms described - they simply get clicked on, hourglass for a second or three, then nothing at all happens.
For the BSOD, it was the sort that contains a STOP message with hexadecimal following it, but no file or driver names or anything like that, just the generic warning text.

That's, please make sure you click the links to see what is suggested for each item. Note that you have a load of storage being used for System Restore. Where suggested is 1696 MB's, you are using 28,031 MB's.
Please also note that you have two drivers that need updating, out of date drives can cause many problems hard to explain.
This will clean that one infected System Restore file MBAM found:

Trying to run SFC - ran for quite some time, eventually got the pop-up "Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache, insert your CD" dialogue.
As I don't have an XP CD, I read the link to the site guide you posted, and attempted to change my registry sourcepath entry to point to C:/ for C:/i386 folder - however it was already set to C: as it turns out, and it still doesn't work. From the guide site, it sounds like this means my i386 folder is corrupted...?
I attempted to follow the instructions for removing System Restore; in the System Restore, my options were only 'System Restore Settings' hyperlink, or radio buttons for 'Create a Restore Point' or 'Restore my computer to an earlier time'.
I clicked on the settings link, got the same symptom as above where it hourglassed briefly but nothing happens.
I assume I shouldn't be creating a restore or restoring my computer, so didn't select either of these options.
I am unable to follow most of the PCPitStop recommendations, due to the non-functioning of the various items - e.g. typing msconfig in the Run window, or navigating to System in the Control Panel to reduce system restore max capacity, both hourglass then do nothing and launch nothing.
Final note, and sorry for repeated posts as no edit function; I attempted to update my display driver as per PCPitStop recommendation, I BSODed partway through the install bar progress.
Thanks again for all your help. The inability to run system apps like msconfig and the Control Panel contents seems to be still a serious problem not showing up on the various checks and diagnostics?

As I don't have an XP CD, I read the link to the site guide you posted
Computers come with this CD? It is needed in the event you need to do a repair of the Operating System, a reinstallation of the Operating System and a reformat of the hard drive if that becomes necessary?
If I can not be assured the Operating System files are intact and not corrupt, I do not see how you can expect me to help you.
You can look here for help with the MSConfig and Control panel problem.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm look here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=System+configuration+utility+will+not+open&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
You have a real problem without an Operating System CD. I can only suggest you work through all you can and see how the computer runs.
Well, thanks again. Computers unfortunately don't always come with this CD, it's pretty common in the last few years here I think, for PCs to simply have Windows pre-installed and the vendor saves by not including the CD itself.
I'll try the various troubleshooting. If I can't get Control Panel options or msconfig to work I am probably out of options bar finding a windows install CD I guess.

Computers unfortunately don't always come with this CD
Not sure where you buy your computers but I have three and even the Dell's include reinstallation disks that will restore to factory condition.
If you wish to continue to look for hidden malware that might be causing this problem, we will start with Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS)
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post
and BlackLight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe <<< download to your Desktop
Double click the fsbl.exe and accept the agreement
Click NEXT...then Scan
BlackLight will Scan for hidden items
If anything is found save the report and post it.
Items found may be valid so do not remove anything.
Beginning to guess I'm a hopeless case.
Blacklight revealed nothing.
Kaspersky won't run due to out of data Java. Java update (v6 update 13 from the java.com website) won't install, got partway through the wizard then had a popup referring to installation error 25099, "unzipping core files failed".
No Control Panel options work, even things like clock/calendar won't open, doubleclicks give a brief hourglass then nothing. Except immediately after boot-up, when for a couple of seconds if quick you can open something.
I've used MSConfig to remove some things from the startup (MSConfig only works if launched immediately on boot). I've gone into System Restore and removed the infected Restore file.
I've updated my display driver, and I'm trying to get to the other programs flagged up earlier in the thread as outdated and therefore risks, but most (but not all) the time I install something, either it does nothing/won't launch as per control panel items above, or the PC bluescreens partway through the install. The machine has also BSODed a couple of other times with no apparent triggers.
I'm going back over the thread to see if I've missed something good to do.

Perhaps combofix will show something.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

May be a bit premature, but combofix seems to have fixed things. Can now open control panel items, installed java update with no error messages, etc.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like combofix removed some nasty hidden junk and found a infected file
Infected copy of c:\windows\system32\sfcfiles.dll was found and disinfected
that it replaced from: Restored copy from - c:\i386\sfcfiles.dll
So System File Checker should work for you now but first, let's do this.
Follow these directions carefully:
Make sure you can view all files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp
Use this scanner: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to scan this file in RED
c:\documents and settings\Kat\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_13\lzma.dll
and post the information.
C:\VundoFix Backups <<< please delete that folder in RED
e:\PciCon.sys <<< I can't find much infomation about this file, looks like a USB or Flash drive "e", have you been using one?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=PciCon.sys+&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
Let me know about this.
Thanks
