Spybot stalled at Virtumonde.sdn

Spybot S & D started at bootup this AM and ran through 398,186 of 542132 files but stalled at Virtumonde.Sdn. After waiting about 15 minutes I exited the program and which allowed boot up to complete. I searched the web and found Virtumonde.Sdn to be malware. The manual removal procedure on this cite appears rather awesome. Is there an easier way to remove this animal and how might I protect my PC from this and other bad actors

I would like to add that my system is WIN PRO/SP2 and browser is IE7 and PC is a DELL 9150.
