If anyone has lately (May 2009) had a problem updating or installing Spybot, then you probably have a similar root-kit virus to the one I had. My resolve was to run ComboFix.exe from Removed which will clean just about anything.

Hi,
I posted a 'fix' for this problem today. It seems to be connected to a root-kit virus that disables both the update and install features of Spybot. I ran ComboFix.exe (from Removed which did the trick.
