My laptop runs very slowly. Sometimes IE or AOL will hog massive amounts of memory in the processes list. The commit charge, whatever that means, will be at least 50%. I am using a computer given to me by a former employer, and it still has the outdated Symantec antivirus software on it and that I can't remove because I don't have admin privileges. As a result, the software I run like AVG and Avast! can't initialize properly on start up. So I don't completely trust them. I could buy a "real" protection suite, but again I still have Symantec and can't get rid of it.

I first became concerned about my computer being infected when I started getting pop ups a few weeks ago telling me I had to go buy software to fix my computer. I think this was part of that worm that was hyped in the news so much. I'm pretty sure SpyBot killed it, but I'm wondering what else is on there. Then Avast said I had something called Rootkit-gen. I think that's gone now but that may just be the tip of the iceberg. I got a message a short time ago saying a virus had been detected by a heuristic method in the memory. It recommended I ignore it, reboot, and run a scan. I did and nothing came up. I can't remember the name of the file but it was a .sys.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

You have a real problem here and it is likely not a malware issue and this is a malware removal forum. I will try to help if I can, but once I realize I can not, I will tell you that, please respect that decision.

1) You have three antivirus programs running at the same time, see this:

For starters, you must remove all but one antivirus program. There is no way to tell what issues are occuring that are being caused by conflicting programs.

2) "I am using a computer given to me by a former employer"
Normally when someone give you a computer, the administrative passwords and any program installation disks, the Operating System disk, etc. are given with the computer. Were you expected to return the computer when you no longer worked for them?

3) TeaTimer is not diabled, if you have no read the directions, you need to do so.

4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
