Hi there,
you have helped me once before and I hope you can help again. My computer tends to take a very long time to open. When everything has loaded, opening the internet browser can takes a good 2-3 minutes to open and there are times when page loading errors occur. These are intermittent problems but non the less frustrating.
Another problem is that my mouse tends to lock for no apparent reason and can not be easily moved about. I have also noticed activity when the browser is not open - is this related to the google desktop thingy?

before you ask, this is my personal computer and no longer associated with a business. if there is nothing bugging my computer can you advise what I can do to speed it along a bit.

I regularly run the anti virus, spybot and malwarebytes, which don't return an apparent infection.

I have turned off the spybot tea timer and done a registry back up with Erunt as advised. below is a copy of the HJT log.

thank you for you time.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

G'Day Michelle, I am not seeing anything in the HJT log. (does not mean something can't be there) I will do all I can to help you with these issues.

I would like to start with a free diagnostic to see if it will shed any light.
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)

A few questions:

Have you discussed this with your Internet Service Provider? It could be that they have issues you don't know about.

Have you checked at the website of your mouse to see if there is an updated driver? The symptoms sound like an out of date driver.

"page loading errors occur" <<< we always need error messages word for word, exactly as Windows give them to you, please post that complete error message.
For instance "page loading errors occur" at Google returns:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=page+loading+errors+occur&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
Results 1 - 10 of about 138,000,000 for page loading errors occur
The more accurate the message the better the chance of getting the information you need.

I have also noticed activity when the browser is not open - is this related to the google desktop thingy?
You have a load of running processes that could be causing this, start looking at this information for help:

Recap: Provide that diagnostic report, any error message and any comments you think will help.

I regularly run the anti virus, spybot and malwarebytes, which don't return an apparent infection.
Would you provide the results of an MBAM scan as soon as it is finished, make sure you update before you run it.

Cheers...Phil

Evening,

I have run a pitstop check and here is the link as requested

http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=21533391

i am guessing my little lap top is nearing the end of it's usable life!
if so, what are the best things to do to decrease its stress!!

Here is the MBAM log

=======================================================

I have cleaned up what i feel comfortable at doing based on the links you send through but I am unsure of the start up ones - which are really needed?

regarding the mouse I should qualify this as saying the cursor gets 'stuck' at times - is that the same thing? I dont use a mouse on the laptope only the mouse pad so it is a problem when it freezes.

I have not had any page loading errors at the moment - but I will check with the ISP for further information.

thanks again

Misch

You have read the diagnostic report? Especially the Recommended Fixes.
Click each of those and make the suggested fixes. You can see System Restore is using 45775 MB's of space, here is some System Restore information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx

Keep in mind as a register member at PCPitstop, when you correct issues and run a new scan, it will show your progress and maintain a history. If you have questions related to the tests:
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=6
or have questions about non-malware related XP issues:
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3
Folks are very knowledgeable and will do all they can to help.

i am guessing my little lap top is nearing the end of it's usable life!
I would not say that, it just needs more tender, loving care. I have a ten year old with Windows 98SE that runs like a new computer and the one I am working on is a Dell with XP Pro and is seven years old and runs great.

if so, what are the best things to do to decrease its stress!!
We already started discussing that with the links I posted earlier, as we age, we need maintenance more often.

Here are links to help you learn about the programs on the computer:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

regarding the mouse I should qualify this as saying the cursor gets 'stuck' at times - is that the same thing? I dont use a mouse on the laptope only the mouse pad so it is a problem when it freezes.
I would guess a driver update should correct the issues. Visit the website of the mouse and look for drivers, it should tell you what you need.

An option would be to purchase a new mouse, they do wear out, how long have you had it.

Post a fresh HJT log for a look along with any comments you have.

Thanks...phil
