Some background info to start....

A couple of weeks ago I dload a trial for WinXP Manager from what I thought was a reputable site. The installer was simply named SetUp.exe. Due to me having "Show hidden files and folders" enabled I spotted that the installer gave me an autorun.inf and a Run.exe on all of my partitiions/hard drives (I have 16 partitions spread across 8 hard drives. 4 hd's are external).

Although I thought this was strange I decided to go ahead with the install. A couple of days ago I uninstalled the trial & found that all the autorun.inf and Run.exe files were still there. Each time I tried to manually delete them they returned again pretty much straight away.

That's when I thought it was dodgy. A scan with my a/v found nothing. A scan with SpyBot S&D (which I've used for some time btw) found entries for the hijacker CoolWWWSearch.OleHelp. I hadn't previously spotted the svchost.exe in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer. After some searching about to find a way of removing it manually I came here to hopefully get some help.

I've followed the instructions ie: disabled teatimer, backed up my registry with Erunt & made a log file with HiJackThis v2.0.2.

In the log file I noticed 3 entries for Alcohol which I uninstalled some time ago. A friend installed his copy for me so that I could view the contents of an.iso file. I never used it again hence the uninstall. Those entries or the program, while it was installed, have never given me any issues so I'm not bothered about them.

Some help removing the hijacker CoolWWWSearch.OleHelp would be greatly appreciated though.

I'll now add the contents of the HJT log...

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) and save it to your desktop.

Alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
Alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:

Make sure the Perform Full Scan option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found.
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi Bio-hazard :) Pleased to meet you.

Although the world & hence the internet is a big place the old saying about it being a small world is often true. For instance I see that you live in Cornwall. Well I'm not that far away from you as I live in Bristol.

Also about this time last year me & my partner went to Somerset to visit an online friend of mine who I've known for a little over 5 yrs now. Just recently I've made another friend on facebook who lives just 40 miles away.

Getting back to the topic at hand you say that you want the mbam log to start with...

I have no idea where the files in sys volume on drives f and s came from. My only thought there is maybe facebook where some of the ppl that play the same games as I do have reported getting a virus from ad's on the site. I also spotted a news story about this on theregister.co.uk however as far as I'm aware I've not had any problems from this myself.

As for the microsoft Security Center entries...I disabled the Security Center myself along time ago as I was told by some online friends who I consider trustworthy that it is a resource hog & not really needed.

RSIT logs to follow in seperate posts as they are both long...

How my pc is now behaving.

I've noticed no difference but then I'm not sure that this hijacker caused me any issues beore recieving your help. In the last week I've had the occasional error message saying that DKservice (Diskeeper) had to end. Could that be a symtom of this malware that I have?

A few wks ago I upgraded my net connection to virgins 50mb package. On the 1st 2 Sunday nights I lost connection due to DHCP renewing the lease while all of the last week, since Monday 25th, I've lost connection 2 - 4 times each night. I was blaming this on the router that they supplied (netgear wnr2000) which doesn't get very good reviews online. A couple of nights ago I switched back to my old router (linksys befs4r1) which I've had for a couple of yrs without any problems. I still lost connection last night for around 45 mins & again tonight for an hour. Imemediately after it happened to night I connected from the modem straight to this pc so that I could reply to you. This didn't work as I thought it would & instead I was given an ip address that had the modem as the gateway. I was then able to type in an ip that led me straight to the modem setup where I found error & warnings due to "No Ranging Response received". I now think that I have a faulty modem so tomorrow I intend to ring virgin to report it.

After removing the entries found with Mbam I still have the autorun.inf & Run.exe files on every partiton. Also the svchost.exe in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer has unfortunately returned.

It is very hard to say what caused that problem.

As for the microsoft Security Center entries...I disabled the Security Center myself along time ago as I was told by some online friends who I consider trustworthy that it is a resource hog & not really needed.

Malwarebytes fixes them because infections tends to disable them. When we are finished you can disable them if you wish.

Download and Run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

Here you can find a tutorial about Combofix: HOW TO USE COMBOFIX (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. A guide to do this can be found HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

IMPORTANT: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Sorry that it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you. I had to wait for a technicin from my isp to arrive yesterday before I could do anything. Knowing my luck he would have arrived while I was in the middle of doing the scan with ComboFix. As it was he showed up late in the day & provided me with a new modem with instructions to make notes of when & if I get disconnected over the course of the following week before calling them back. I then decided that it was best to wait until today to go ahead.

Now I have just spent the last 2 & 1/2 hours trying to find a way of disabling my Norton Internet Security without getting a warning from ComboFix. The only way that I can see of disabling the anitvirus & firewall is by right clicking the icon in the system tray where disabling them is 2 of the options available. When I do this however ComboFix gives me this warning even though the sys tray icon has a red cross on it showing the A/V & firewall to be disabled.

ComboFix has dectected the following real time scanner(s) to be active:

antivirus: Norton Internet Security

Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are known to interfere with ComboFix's running. This may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.

Please disable these scanners before clicking 'OK'.

I haven't been sure wether I should go ahead with the ComboFix scan or not due to that & now I see no choice but to ask for your advice on this. I want to be careful rather than sorry. So I now ask should I go ahead with the scan even though I get that warning?

btw it seems that I have now fixed the issue with Dkservice that I mentioned previously. I did this by increasing the MFT size (82% was in use) & then used the chkdsk /f command on the hard drive that was affected. I did this last night & no issues with it since so it looks like that problem wasn't related to this malware afterall.

Thats ok. I am glad you got that sorted out.

If you have done this then go ahead and run Combofix.

I'd already looked at that link however it doesn't apply to the latest version of NIS which is what I am using. I can only assume that refers to an older verion & that symantec haven't updated their site.

Here's is what I did do...

In the Settings under the Computer section I turned off Auto Protect. (doing this disables the Antivirus protection)
In the Settings under the Internet section I turned off both the Smart Firewall & Intrusion Prevention.

I then started to run Combofix & still got the same warning so I then turned off Antispyware from the main NIS page. The warning was still there in the next screen but I didn't see that I had any choice & continued with running Combofix. Once Combofix had finished NIS wouldn't run at all until after I rebooted. I wanted to turn back on the disabled features of NIS asap & was able to do so after the reboot.

Looking on my drives/partitions all the autorun.inf files are now gone & so is the svchost.exe from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer. The Run.exe files still remain however. As a test I deleted one of them from a partition to see if it would return as they did before. It didn't :) I did restore it again, from the recycle bin, for the time being until I get the go ahead to delete them all from you. It seems to me though that Combofix has done the job :)

I'll now post both the Combofix & Hijackthis logs as you requested.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....

I've now deleted all of the Run.exe files from each drive/partition but before I go any further I feel that I must ask a question.

You say...

It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky.
Will I be able to uninstall this again after the scan? If the answer is no then I don't like the idea of installing it as having 2 antivirus programs (Kaspersky & my Norton) installed is never a good idea.

I would never ask anyone to install 2 antivirus programs on to the same system. Kaspersky is a Online Scanner, it only scans your system. It is not a full antivirus program.....only a scanner.

Combofix failed to delete S98EA5D5E.tmp. Whatever that file is I can't see it being harmful as googling for that name didn't bring back a single result which it undoubtably would have done if it was infected with anything.

The one infection that Kaspersky found belongs to HFS which is a free filesharing application that I've used a couple of times to transfer family videos, made with a camcorder, to a family member in Australia. I don't see that the one file found is or will be a problem.

HFS homepage: hxxp://www.rejetto.com/hfs/

btw I chose to only scan Critical Areas. Scanning the whole pc would have taken all day & tbh I don't have the time for that.

Now I'd like to ask if there's any where of removing the files that Kaspersky downloaded to my pc?

Combofix failed to delete S98EA5D5E.tmp. Whatever that file is I can't see it being harmful as googling for that name didn't bring back a single result which it undoubtably would have done if it was infected with anything. If there is not google matches i am always suspicious about the entries. It looks like it might belong to Norton but i cant be sure. Thats why i want upload that file.

Now I'd like to ask if there's any where of removing the files that Kaspersky downloaded to my pc?Yes i saw that HFS entry in your Combofix log. The Kaspersky entry is harmless as you can see it says it is not a virus. Kaspersky also show other entries that can be a security risk.

I would have like to see a full scan but i understand your decision. However i can not be 100% sure that you are clean.

You should have entry in Add/Remove panel called Kaspersky online scanner. So you can remove it that way. Also after you have done that check that this folder has gone: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kaspersky Lab

I'd like you to check (a file/some files) for Viruses.

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com) or Jotti's (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

c:\windows\S98EA5D5E.tmp

Copy/Paste file into the white Upload a file box.
Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
Copy and Paste results in your next reply.

How is your computer running now?

None of those scans will work on the file at the moment as it's currently 0 bytes in size.

Virus total: 0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio
Jotti's: File is empty (0 bytes)!

All I can do there is keep an eye on it for a couple of days to see if it does get bigger in size at all. If it does then I'll try both of those sites again. Maybe one of them will say if it's related to a particular program although I doubt it. If I am able to scan it with one of both of those sites then I'll post the results for you to see.

I did boot into safe mood a little earlier in order to scan the file with Norton which found nothing wrong. Norton wouldn't scan the file otherwise saying that it was in use. It's a hidden file btw & can only be viewed by unchecking the "Hide protected operating system files" box at tools/folder options/view.

As for how my pc is running now...well it's running without any probs that I can see. I've still to remove Kaspersky aswell as Malwarebytes, Hijackthis etc. Which reminds me. Is there a way of removing or disabling the Windows Recovery Console?

Disabling would be the preferable option so that I don't get the choice of booting to that or my OS again. Just disabling it would mean I could enable it again & keep it installed should I need to use combofix at any time in the future.

Hello!

I am fairly certain that it belongs to Norton. I just wanted to be sure.

Is there a way of removing or disabling the Windows Recovery Console?

Disabling would be the preferable option so that I don't get the choice of booting to that or my OS again. Just disabling it would mean I could enable it again & keep it installed should I need to use combofix at any time in the futureThere is a way to remove it but order to do that you need to edit your boot.ini file, if done incorrectly it can make your PC unbootable.

Here are instructions how to remove it: How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial117.html).

I would keep it as it only adds 2 seconds to your start up.

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

You can get rid of the tools we used:

RSIT and the folder C:rsit - (You can just delete the exe file from your desktop)
HijackThis - (You can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs)
malwarebytes Antimalware - (I would recommend to keep this program. You can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs)

Delete ComboFix and Clean Up
Click Start > Run > type combofix /u > OK (Note the space between combofix and /u)

Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions.

General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate) on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector) or F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html). I suggest that you run one of them at least once a month.
Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE (http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm)

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE (http://www.winpatrol.com/).
SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html). You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html).
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php). Here are two tutorials: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6926) and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6913).
Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=22187) and for more information regarding host files read HERE (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).
Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead: Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) or Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/)

Here is a great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html).

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php). You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!

Thanks for all the help you've given me over the week or so :) I do have 1 last question for you. After running the combofix /u command I still have a couple of items left on my c drive. There's the log txt which I know I can just delete but there's also a folder titled ComboFix containing 2 files. There's a MS-DOS application named "Nircmd" and a Windows Command Processor named "CF23491". Can I just delete that folder too?

I'll remove HJT & RSIT once I've finished replying to you however I've decided to keep Erunt installed as it may prove useful should I run a trial of any application again.

Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
NIS keeps itself updated thorughout each day.

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
I'm waiting until we are completely done before getting updates (I forgot last month tbh). My second machine & my gf's machine were done yesterday & earlier today. There are 35 patches in this months updates.

I hope you don't mind me pointing out a small criticism in what you say concerning visiting the MS update site on a regular basis. Not everyone will know that MS issues updates on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. You could add that fact to what you say rather than just telling people to visit the update site on a regular basis. I think this could help some to know when exactly to go to the update site.

Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Impossible with at least a few of my installed applications as they are no longer made. Partition Magic for example. The same with Paintshop 9 as Jasc sold out to Corel. I stuck to v9 as I didn't like the program much after Corel took over.

# Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE
IE 8 will be installed once I've got the MS updates. It's very rare that I use IE anyway as I've been using FireFox for the past 3 to 4 years.

Recommended Programs
I've saved this page as .htm so that I can look at your suggestions at a later date.

Thanks again :)

Lot of our users are not knowledgeable about computers as you are. So for them it is a reminder to check these things.

So go ahead and update your Windows. Please post that you have read this so this can be archived.

Deleted that folder now.

I've now found that I have a minor annoyance which is links in emails etc opening in IE rather than FireFox as they used to. Once I've updated windowns I'll get that sorted & then make an image of my c drive.

Thanks again & all the best to you :)

I guess al thats left to be said is that you can now close this thread & archive it.
