Pretty sure this problem is linked to mywebsearch and possibly virtumonde. Most symtoms have been removed with malwarebytes and superantispyware, but the computer is still slugish especially with internet downloads like erunt (took 30 minutes or so). Here's the HJT log. Let me know if you need anything else.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

Last computer you posted about was Vista, this is a personal computers?
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25712&postcount=5

I am not seeing anything in this HJT log, the problem may not even me malware and I might send you to a Windows XP forum? If you want to look to see what we can find, we will start like this.

but the computer is still slugish especially with internet downloads
Contact your Internet Service Provided (technical support) and have them check your upload/download speeds, the problem might be with them.
Here are some tests you can run yourself, but do involve the folks you pay first.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=check+download+speeds&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

SAS uses a lot of resources, unless you paid for it, make sure it is not running.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) No need to download MBAM if you still have it but make sure you update, run the program as directed and post the results.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

4) I usually wait until the bugs get worked out of a new browser, have a look at this:

Spybot detects 2 registry files with mywebsearch and 2 system files. SAS detects 19 registry files and 2 system files. After this post I will remove SAS.

Since installing Service Pack 3, I think there is a problem with my DLink Driver. I get the error message about wlanapi.dll on startup and I've heard that SP3 causes issues with this. File exporer finds this file in four locations on the hard drive

Although I just put service pack 3 on at the beginning of the week. I don't know if this is affecting the internet or not, but I do know that downloading from IE or Firefox is near impossible and utorrent seems to be a lot easier to download from.

Any advise? I appreciate your help.

Thanks

Proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Adobe Reader 7.0.8 <<< out of date and unsafe:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2009/04/update_on_adobe_reader_issue.html
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 <<< out of date and unsafe:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Logitech Desktop Messenger <<< install with other Logitech programs because the EULA agreement is not read. A resource waster and I suggest, unless you use it, that you uninstall it.

2) MBAM: did you allow MBAM to reboot when it requested it? Run a new scan to make sure it is clean.

3) Spybot S&D: check for updates, run a scan, fix any problems then:
on the toolbar menu select mode and switch to advanced, on the left select tools, view report, make sure all the options are selected near the bottom except:
Uncheck[ ] do not report disabled or known legitimate Items,
uncheck[ ] Include a list of services in report.
Uncheck[ ] Include uninstall list in report.
Now select near top-- view report, Press export, and save the log on your Desktop, post the saved log in your next reply.

4) SAS: post the results of the scan, I would like to see what it is finding.

5) DLink Driver: Suggest you take that up with technical Support here:
http://support.dlink.com/chooseCountry.asp or perhaps even here:
http://www.opendrivers.com/company/22678/d-link-free-driver-download.html

5) "Although I just put service pack 3 on at the beginning of the week."
Microsoft has created a place where you can ask questions and get help with Service Pack #3 issues:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

6) wlanapi.dll:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=wlanapi.dll+&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
to research error messages, they must be posted exactly "word for word" just as Windows gives them to you.

6) utorrent <<< p2p program? All p2p programs must be uninstalled.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

Thanks

Hi,

1. I installed PSI and updated its recommendantions, and updated software per your recommendations. I kept two of the four logitech programs. It's my father-in=law's computer and I think he uses those two.

2. I restarted after first scan of MBAM, scanned again with exact same results. I've run it about six times in the past three days all with the same result.

3. I'm not sure this is the spybot log you're looking for, but here's what I got (I'm running a fresh scan now and I'll try it again. This one is pretty big)

5-6) The error message is "The procedure entry point apsinitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll".
I'm not sure what my father-in-law has for wireless hardware from dlink, so i may try to tackle this problem another time.

7) Sorry, removed utorrent. I put it on so that I could download malwarebytes, superantispyware etc since I couldn't download conventionally at the time (ie Iexplore).

Let me know if you see a problem in either report. Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, they look like leftover items in the registry, could you tell me if you are signing in as administrator when you are running Spybot? It may be the registry items need administrator mode to remove stuff from the registry? I am not an expert with Spybot S&D and we may need to ask for help but first let's see if combofix will locate and remove the junk, I know it does target MyWebSearch.

It's my father-in=law's computer and I think he uses those two.
That's answers one of my questions, what did the technical support folks have to say about the download speeds?

Read and follow the directions carefully:

1) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

2) Could you describe how the computer is running now?

3) I would like a look at a free diagnostic, register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)

Thanks
