View Full Version : (HJT log) problem: random crashes and recurring rootkits

Sheeppaste
2009-06-06, 19:57
Somebody please help me, AVG 8.5 is constantly saying "2 rootkits found" yet after being removed and the computer is restarted then another two, slightly differently named rootkits are being detected. My system also suffers from random crashes when initialising or exiting programs and oftentimes simply when starting the computer. Here is my HJT log:

Hi Sheeppaste

Please post next AVG report :)

Sheeppaste
2009-06-08, 02:22
Last AVG scan reported 35 new tracking cookies since the last scan, which was yesterday, and two rootkits. Today's rootkits are:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\ahlc8bcj.SYS
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\a0oy43vn.SYS

They change with every different scan yet interestingly the names for the drivers always begin with "a", which seems odd.
Please help me as this computer is rapidly becoming less and less stable.
Thank you.

Those look like to be related to DAEMON Tools.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Would they be legitimate drivers for daemon tools or corrupted/hijacked ones? Thanks.

Shaba
2009-06-09, 07:04
They are legit drivers, yes.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I was bored one day when I was about 15, wanted to be some infamous hacker, lol, couldn't get them to work so just forgot they were on here. I must have seen the matrix too many times. I deleted them now and it's reduced my rootkit count to only 1 :), any idea what could be causing the other one? I do have a lot of ancient things on here, like something called borland that I downloaded years ago. I hope you'll still help me, even though I am notorious :p.

Which rootkit AVG finds now?

Argh it keeps not saying that I haven't posted anything, so very annoying... hopefully this works :)

Sorry but I don't fully understand you.

Can you please explain again?

2009-06-12, 17:05
oh sorry, i keep posting replies but it doesnt say that I have done. Plus I didnt notice your request for the AVG scan.

AVG rootkit scan shows 1 rootkit:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\ao2sipn8.sys

sorry for the confusion earlier.

howcomes the rootkit cannot be completely removed by AVG and why does it change it's name constantly?

Thanks

That is most likely related to daemon tools by the looks of filename.

Do you have daemon tools installe?

Sheeppaste
2009-06-13, 14:04
I did but I deleted it before when you said it could be related to daemon tools. any other ideas? Also, how safe is it for me to be doing online transactions, such as ebay? Thanks.

Shaba
2009-06-13, 14:44
I think that it still is related to that.

If you right-click that file, choose properties and information tab, what does it say about vendor?

Sheeppaste
2009-06-14, 19:53
Hmmm, strangely the file can't actually be found in the folder that avg says it's in. also, when performing a rootkit scan directly on the folder then no infections are found. The rootkit can only be found when performing a complete scan and is discovered within the first 10 seconds of the scan being started, long before the "WINDOWS" folder is scanned. The information that AVG gives on the infection is: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\a35updwt.SYS";"Hidden driver";"Object is hidden"

I've set my computer to show hidden folders and looked in the system32\drivers folder many times and can not find it. This is all very strange and confusing :(. Hopefully you can help me :). I hope so, thanks.

So let's check this:

Download gmer.zip (http://gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save to your desktop.
alternate download site (http://hype.free.googlepages.com/gmer.zip)

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html) for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial106.html).
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Hope that helps :)

There are signs of both Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

So that driver is related to one of them and nothing to worry about :)

oh ok then, any idea as to why my computer keeps randomly turning itself off? it started a while back when my friend tried to start up a game and then my graphics card died, i got a new one but has been randomly crashing ever since :( this computer is rather old so it may just be that the motherboard is worn out :(. thanks for the help with the rootkits :) I thought they might be the cause for my computer's strange behaviour.

That indicates hardware issue.

I'd guess that is has something to do with your new graphics card. Have you checked its temperature?

I've got to be honest that i'm not too good with the hardware side of things, it was only 6 months ago that i actually realised to install my motherboard, somehow it was working for years without it. how would i check the temperature? Thanks.

p.s. I removed daemon tools and alcohol 120 and AVG is no longer detecting any rootkits :)

thanks again.

Everest (http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) should help.

Those are not rootkits though they are hidden. No need to uninstall those programs.

Well i never used those programs anyway, so thought i might as well get rid of them. According to everest my GPU temp is 52*C and GPU ambient is 45*C. Hmmm could the fact that the north bridge is nVidia nForce4 but is being used by an ATI radeon X850 Pro cause some problems? Thanks, this hardware stuff is so confusing :(

Those are fine.

What does it say about CPU temperature?

Sheeppaste
2009-06-18, 13:21
The CPU temperature is 32 to 33*C. Sometimes when my computer randomly turns itself off, when I turn it back on again there's a windows message that says something about a power failure, could the voltage of the cpu be wrong? Thanks

Yes or some other hardware issue.

Is it OK to redirect you to some windows forum?

Yeah that should be fine, thank you for your help :) :) :)

Thanks for that :) one last concern I have, if you don't mind, is that spybot search and destroy keeps on saying that I have "right media" and that it's something to do with yield manager, spybot S&D keeps failing to remove this though :( any final words of wisdom before all my problems are solved? :) Thanks for your time.
