Hello!

I've been having a problem for a while with my computer and found temporary fixes that have kept it running. Nothing would update (Windows, Spybot, AVG ... ) and I couldn't figure out why. Recently though, I tried to update windows manually (by going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and got redirected to a fake google page. While searching, I found a similar problem on the forum with positive results so hopefully you can help me get running 100% again. Thank you for all your help in advance!

I understand that whatever is on here is pretty darn nasty. Even while trying to reply to you my computer is giving me fake "This Page Cannot Be Read" messages. Whatever is on here doesn't want to be fixed and that's enough reason for me to try. Worst case scenario I know is to reformat but I'd like to see if it can be repaired otherwise. Your help is greatly appreciated and I'll go and reread the terms and check out those other websites (computer willing).

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Thanks for the feedback, it may be hard to remove so don't expect fast or easy. I believe SDFix will remove at least part of the junk, so we will start like this.

1) Are you using a router?

2) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

3) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks...Phil

Yes I do use a router from my DHL service. There is one other computer that uses the router and various consoles (one wired, two wireless).

Well that was a fun time. For reference, when SDFix restarted my computer the program ran fine, but my system froze up immediately after it generated its report. I could see the "windows update" icon appear as well as the "your system may not be protected" icon. I restarted though and the "windows update" one vanished. I also was unable to connect to the internet ("unable to clear netBT" was the error produced when trying to reset it). Just trying to keep you informed about what's happening. I'm on another computer (the other one on the router for reference) for now so here are some log files for you!

Hackers have also started infecting routers, have a look:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/06/malware_silently_alters_wirele_1.html

Please be positive "Word Wrap" is disabled in Notepad under Format.

I also was unable to connect to the internet ("unable to clear netBT"
Please be sure any error messages are complete and word for word.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=unable+to+clear+netBT&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
A reboot may fix the issue, or you may have to power down all eguipment and restart it. (unless the router is infected, they resetting it should fix the problem)

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX <<< check this:
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2009/04/update_on_adobe_reader_issue.html
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 <<< out of date
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_02 <<< VERY OLD
Java(TM) 6 Update 13 <<< valid but their is an update:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< will help if you have trouble uninstalling the old version.

Mozilla Firefox (3.0.6) <<< out of date and unsafe, update from within the program.

Follow the directions carefully:

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed

My apologies about text wrapping, I thought it said to enable. I'll disable from this point forward.

The router was reset about the time my computer was starting to act funky (reset from the machine that's acting up) but I will reset it again.

Adobe Flash and Reader I uninstalled. FoxIt is downloaded, but I'll install it later.

Java has been uninstalled and I'll fetch the most up to date version when I use RPTools next (the only program I use with Java).

Firefox says its up to date now.

I also removed a few other programs that were old.

Here are the two logs requested after ComboFix was run.

Current Firefox is version 3.0.10?
Open Firefix then Help and Check for Updates.

Delete SDFix from the computer, we are finished with that tool.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

Windows has started running updates again (its running updates automatically). Also, Firefox updated to a newer version before (3.0.10). Sorry for the confusion. SDFix was removed.

You were right about the computer running a little slow on start up, but hey I'll live with it until it gets up to speed. Better then the alternative, that's for sure. It seems to be a lot more responsive over all!

Here are the log files requested.

Thanks for the feedback, give Prefetch a few restarts to repopulate. I can see from your running processes that you could benefit from this information:

Before we can proceed, I am not seeing an antivirus program on the computer? It won't do any good to clean it if you are not going to try to secure the computer. If you don't have a plan, here are three good freeware programs. Install only ONE and scan the system. Let me know if there are any problems at that point.

AVG is the virus software that I've used for the past 6 years or so. I removed it recently (past week or so) since it wasn't updating and I was trying to get an updated copy running to try and catch whatever was causing the issue. Obviously that wasn't successful.

AVG is installing now and I'll get down to doing some reading of the sites that you linked to. When AVG is done I'll update it and run a full scan (unless you say otherwise of course).

Sounds good, I run AVG free 8.5 myself.

* Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

* Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.

* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

* Close results and close the Interface.

* Copy and paste the contents of that file unless it is clean.

Thanks

Over 30 windows updates!?!?! Wow. That's quite a bit (including the .net update I was trying to update a few weeks ago unsuccessfully).

Also, a couple questions that you would be more informed to answer for me.

1) What's a good Firewall program to use? (one of the websites you gave provided some lists, but since I have the expert on the phone I figured I might as well ask)

2) Freeware v. paid subscriptions? Is it worth upgrading to a paid version of something like AVG for example (besides the obviously boon of supporting the future development)? What about any other programs that you are suggesting? (there is a decent chance that someone else will inherit this computer in a month or so and they aren't nearly as computer literate and would sooner buy a new computer then try and fix it like I am)

AVG did run into a bit more of the Twex (in Combofix's quarantine?) and a couple other things. The log is posted below as requested. Windows is still updating its 31 files and I'm sure after a few restarted from it I'll be back.

Over 30 windows updates!?!?!
That is a lot, about 6 were just released, but thirty (if they are Windows Critical Updates) would mean a lot of months without downloading any?

1) "What's a good Firewall program to use?"
This link mentions the freeware firewalls available:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/Links.html

I personally use Zone Alarm free, it was dropped from the list because they starting installing ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker
http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2007/12/beware-of-zonealarm.html
http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installations/askjeeves-banner/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3143

If you want to try ZA, make sure you opt out when asked about that adware.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/

2) "Freeware v. paid subscriptions?"
I personally only suggest freeware products. You can Google for information about paid versions. I really don't want to get into comparing, perhaps the experts will in the links I am going to provide. I certainly believe keeping programs up to date and safe online habits have more to do with security than the price of the software.

combofix quarantine as well as combofix will go away with the closing information. AVG did move two bad files to the Virus Vault, make sure to clean the vault after a few days (give time to make sure there has not been an error) It can happen no matter how careful we are.
AVG interface > History > Virus Vault

Let's see if we can wrap up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

(optional but it won't hurt to scan)
Update AVG 8.5 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

I got an error message with a lot of windows updates that it said couldn't be updated. Afterwards though it did finish updating the 31 files (I copied both lists if you want to see either). It then tried to install an update to IE7 when I restarted even though one update was to upgrade to IE8. Also AVG found one corrupted restore point with one of the worms on it.

Combofix was uninstalled successfully.

Restore "off", Reboot, Restore "on" performed.

MBAM is scanning now and ran into no problems. AVG is scanning again and I'll report tomorrow morning if there are any issues with its scan.

In the mean time I do have two other questions. I have an external drive that I believe may have some of the malware on it. What steps should I take for it cleaning it out? Will it be ok to just plug it in and run MBAM and AVG on the drive before I open anything?

Secondly, before we finish up. Are there any other preventative programs that you would recommend having? Things such as MBAM used monthly for example (as you said before).

Also AVG found one corrupted restore point with one of the worms on it.
Clean the System Restore files like this: <<< if you did this first, the order the instructions were posted in, the System Restore files would have been clean.
Run AVG again to make sure this is the case, if not, follow those instructions again.

I am far from being knowledgeable about Windows Updates and consulted http://support.microsoft.com/ the last time I had an issue. If you are patient, email is free and the support techs are knowledgeable and will stick with you until your issues are resolved.

Optional Windows Updates troubleshooting:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Will it be ok to just plug it in and run MBAM and AVG on the drive before I open anything?
Yes

Are there any other preventative programs that you would recommend having?
Please take the time to review the links from security experts I posted, they should answer all of your questions. If you still have questions once you have done this, please let me know.

Thanks

AVG found a number of files that were very similar to this (I cut and pasted one, but I'll provide the whole list if needed):

"C:\System Volume Information\_restore{08D29AFB-552D-4B1E-861F-8314B47870C5}\RP1\A0000063.inf";"Virus found Worm/AutoRun";"Moved to Virus Vault"

Other then that though it came up clean. After reviewing, I did follow the instructions given in sequential order. I'm probably just confused about the purpose of that parent folder and misspoke about it.

I've redirected my query about updates to Microsoft.

If the files AVG found though are kosher, then I think things are significantly better over here and you can close the thread. If there are further steps to follow from what AVG found let me know.

One way or another thank you so much for your help over the past couple days. Things are running much much smoother and I really appreciate your time and effort in helping me out!!

C:\System Volume Information\_restore <<< those are infected System Restore files, the directions I posted, if followed, will purge all System Restore files and give you a clean System Restore?

(posted before)
Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Ok. I went step by step again through it and after running again AVG provided a clean scan. I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time, but its all looking good now.

Thanks again for all your assistance over the past couple days. I really appreciate it a lot!
