View Full Version : Spybot won't load; Google hijacked; Restore won't load
Hi,
Ive got a real mess.
The first thing I noticed was that gooogle links get redirected. Then spybot, malwarebytes, and hijackthis won't load properly. Then my anti-virus, CA, won't update. Then my restore will not get past the selection of a date.
Then all my restore points disappeared.
Then I noticed this DCOM error with different services --DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service SENS with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{D3938AB0-5B9D-11D1-8DD2-00AA004ABD5E}
Finally I noticed a whole lot of services are disabled.
I got hijackthis to run by renaming the executable. Here is the Log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.
You are infected, have a look at this which is likely what it is:
http://www.systemlookup.com/Startup/10117.html
You are also hacked by Ukrainian criminals, see this: 85.255.112.64
http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.112.64
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Business_Network
http://rbnexploit.blogspot.com/
They have started stealing information and since they have access to your computer, you should read this for you own safety:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
If you wish to continue, we will start like this:
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from here:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Tutorial if needed
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should. Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more. I see Secunia PSI, are you using it, is it up to date?
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX <<< check this:
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05 <<< VERY old
Java(TM) 6 Update 13 <<< valid but there is an update.
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
(uninstall all old versions)

Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< this program will help if you have trouble uninstalling old versions.
SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 <<< a very good program that I have used for years, but it is totally out of date.
Open the program and update it will then guide you through the process of uninstalling v3.5.1 and reinstalling version 4.2.
Follow the directions carefully and in the posted order.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
(if you still have MBAM there is not need to download, but make sure you update the program and run it as instructed)
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?
Thanks
Hi,
Things are much better. I use secunia and 3 items are flagged, Adobe9.x, IE 7.0, and windows XP. I plan to stay with XP for the near future. I'll upgrade the other two items
I updated SpywareBlaster and ran ATF
Below are the MBAM and HJT logs.
I have a few outstanding issues.
1. When looking at the processes in task manager the user names are missing. IE david and system
2. Looking at the services browser there are 61 services disabled. See attached. (If you open it in Excel its more readable).
3. All my printer definitions are gone.
Your advice is appreciated

I have a few outstanding issues.
1. When looking at the processes in task manager the user names are missing. IE david and system
2. Looking at the services browser there are 61 services disabled. See attached. (If you open it in Excel its more readable).
3. All my printer definitions are gone.
I may not be able to help with these issues, you might have to repair or reinstall the operating system. I will do what I can if I can get more information.
1) Provide more information, exactly what you are doing and exactly what you see. Have you tried to create a new user to see what happens?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783
2) http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp
Have a look at this information to see if it helps. Many services are off on my computer and if you need to have it running or not is not something I would know. I have additional links for checking different service if you wish, I will post them for you.
3) "All my printer definitions are gone." <<< I am not sure what you mean by this, please provide more information, any error messages, post those word for word, anything you think will help. Have you considered reinstalling your printer software?
No action taken <<< why did you take no action when MBAM located those items.
but make sure you update the program
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.37
Database version: 2182 <<< not updated?
(Database 2268 Date 6/12/2009) <<< newest database.
Open MBAM > Click the Update tab > click Check for Updates > allow MBAM to download and install the newest version.
click the > Perform Full Scan
Please follow the directions this time: Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
post the results and provide more information about issues you are having.
Thanks
I reran MBAM updated and its clean. See MBAM and HJT logs.
1. Regarding the user name question, see the attached screen print.
2. Would reinstalling or repairing XP restore the normal set of services? ie automatic manual, and disabled
3. I'll reinstall my printers.
Thanks so much for your service. You are a lifesaver (or computer saver!)

Good morning David, I regret that while my knowledge of malware and removal is good, my expertise in other areas may be less than yours. This is why I help at "Malware Removal" and usually refer other issues to folks who deal with those and who send me their malware problems:)
HJT appears to be clean of malware as does MBAM, this does not rule out the possibility of hidden malware.
1) When I look at your screenshot of TaskManager, it appears normal to me (I am not looking at running processes, since I would not know all of yours anyway) You have the same tabs I have, what exactly do you want me to see.
2) Please see if this information helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841996
Let me know if that resolves your issues. Continue to watch for and post (word for word) any error message or symptom of malware.
Thanks...Phil
I've got my computer back and that's most important. I have you to thank .
If you look at your task manager you should see each process assigned to either the "System" or whoever is logged on. In my screen print those names are missing. I can live with this little deal.
Thamks again,
David

Ahhh...I see that now. You know you can mouse over the lines between items like PID and User Name much in the way you resize Windows. Would you click the User Tab and tell me what is there.
David, have a look at this information: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Especially starting here: Task Manager
to see if anything there helps. That is a very good website to save, here are a few more:

This information may help the computer run better:

Let me know if that helps revolve the Task Manager issue, then I will remove combofix and wrap up.
Thanks...Phil

Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update CA Anti-Virus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.
