View Full Version : Restore Fred

Whatbox
2009-06-13, 02:18
My computer, named Fred was having problems a yer ago after I plugged in my Ipod... all the USB are dead, presumably because drivers are gone. I have done everything I can to restore them but to no avail. A little while after that by screen went haywire with some really strange overlapping of windows. after that i got the blue screen of death and could only work in safe mode till I replaced the graphics card. My system continues to run slow. I am thinking it's a virus. Can you please help me?

Here's my HJT Log as directed:

hi,

dont see any apparent malware in the log. Also dont see a antivirus app installed. do you have one installed and updated? Does a updated spybot dig up anything after a scan? Once we see its malware free then we can see if we can find what may be bogging it down. Its not always malware.

I just have SpyBot and AdAware... No Virus Protection software. Wha do you recommend?

I updated SpyBot and did a complete system scan. Spybot says my system is clean.

I noticed that even though I turned off Tea Timer it's still in the list of programs that ran on start up. Did I do it right?

you disabled tea timer like this?

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Some links to AV, some free, some paid. Paid may have trial versions you can try. Some may come as suites, containing not only AV but anti-malware and/or firewall- check them out and try one, install, update and do a scan.

I dont recommend any particular one.

Rather than not recommending any of them, did you mean to say that each of these virus protection products are equally good?

I installed the first one; Avast, which found and deleted four viral files.

Rather than not recommending any of them, did you mean to say that each of these virus protection products are equally good

I would use any of them myself. Do you have alot of icons down by the clock?
All stuff running in the background, Click on icons one by one and check any options/settings not to start with Windows. You do want to see your AV icon though.

There are 10 icons in the Tray: Java, Outlook, MultiMedia Keyboard, Avast Recovery Database generator, Avast On-Access Scanner, 3 printer helpers, volume, and creative diagnostics Agent.

Task Manager says that there are 60 processes running and CPU usage is between 2% an 12%. Do I need all those 60 processes?

I would say the majority of processes in task manager are needed. Most are Window processes that run in the background. Ending the process would only work for that session, at reboot it will be running again. Software (icons) by the clock also run and burn CPU cycles. Check options to not have it start with windows.
Another way to control what starts up is with msconfig. You do want your
AV running. A good site for using msconfig information:

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

I checked mine after booting into windows and I have 31 processes running in task manager in XP and 40 something in Vista so maybe 60 is alot. Read this article for info about using task manager. Also of the best performance gains you can do is to add more memory to your machine, assuming you dont have the optimal amount.

I was able to cut the start up list by almost 50%.
There is little to no difference in the performance of my PC
Its a 3GHz Pentium with only 512 of RAM but it shouldn't chug on simple tasks like right-clicking on My Computer to get Properties. It didn't work that way when it was new. Ever since the NVIDIA graphics card took a dive... when the USBs stopped working, my PC has never been the same. I think its because I bought a cheap graphics card just to get back up and running. I just went into the properties of My Computer, selected the Advanced tab, clicked the Performance button and changed the setting to Custom. I unchecked some of the animation settings windows events and now my PC is noticeably better. I think I answered my own question... it's time to get a new graphics card.

What can we do about my USB ports now? I would like to get my wheel mouse working again.

Thanks

At this point I am heavily suspecting hardware failure... possibly the motherboard. I'm taking the PC to Tech Trekkers (http://www.techtrekkersoc.com/) so you can close this thread now.
Thanks for you help improving performance earlier.

hi,

Your welcome. Good luck. for your reference: a excellent site for everything USB:

It turns out that the motherboard is fine except for the USB ports. My old Graphics card was indeed fried. I turned off Avast Ativirus and the computer works noticeably faster. I'm going to try some of the other AV software and see if they are any better.

hi,

Clamwin seems to be light on system resources.

I'll check it out... but it will take me a week to get to it. Please don't delete this thread till after I reply back. I need to see this list for a while longer. Thanks.
