View Full Version : Piggybacking? A symptom-less puzzle!

Here's the deal!

So I'm generally computer safe: I have AVG, COMODO, Spybot (and TeaTimer), as well as an up-to-date HOSTS file. However, I recently visited a livestream account which I suppose was bugged with an exploit of some kind. It was a spam post on an image board I normally go to and those are bad news.

I freaked, of course.

I ran AVG, Spybot, and VundoFix by Attribune and they all came up negative for any type of infection. I also just used VundoFix (still no Vundo) and then System Restore to return my system to Friday before I had even clicked on the URL to the livestream account.

Yet, something strange has just happened to me: I was banned from the imageboard for "posting a banned URL" and... the IP THEY BANNED WAS NOT MINE D: !! And I didn't even post an URL! It seems to me like someone is piggybacking my IP, and I'm really quite vexed.

I have no pop-ups, my system is running fine (no lagging type, no redirecting, voted clean by Spybot/AVG/Vundofix), I don't see anything suspicious in my running processes and I am not currently using a proxy.

I have no idea what's going on so here's my HJT log:

Any ideas? If worst comes to worst, I'm going to save everything I can and DBAN this machine. Seriously.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

I doubt I can help, but I will take a look. You do understand someone may have hacked your account at the "imageboard" and once they did that, they could post what they want and it might not have a thing to do with your computer. I suggest you close the account and open a new one under another name, make sure you are using secure passwords and not saving them for easy access by a hacker.
How hard are your passwords to crack?
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/checker.mspx

If you want me to help you look at the computer for any malware, please follow these directions.

1) Read the directions, since TeaTimer is not diabled as instructed, it appears you have yet to do so. Disable TeaTimer as instructed before you post a new HJT log.

2) I need to see the HJT log with System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) in Normal Mode. You may return to Normal Mode and create a HJT log, then return to Selective Startup without a restart if you wish.

3) Post that log and I will respond as soon as possible after you post. Please include any new information or comments you think will help.

4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks...Phil

Hello again, thank you for responding.

I highly doubt someone hacked my account on the image board since there is no account to hack. There are no accounts, only name/e-mail fields you can publish along with a post. You can use a tripcode (an identifying string of numbers and letters following your name), but most people post anonymously.

Anyway, I disabled TeaTimer and put MSConfig into Normal Mode which nearly killed my computer. (Thank god for Selective Start-up Mode, ugh!) so here you go:

And since last time I've uninstalled AVG and installed Avira AntiVirus and scanned with it (still nothing), set TeaTimer to "Paranoid Mode", and used COMODO to stealth all my ports except for computers in my family's LAN.

I'd be happy if this was all in my head and I was just being paranoid, really.

Thanks for your help so far!

I asked you to read the directions so you would see stuff like this:

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
Please uncheck word wrap until we finish working together.

Looking at the uninstall list first: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX <<< check this:
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html

Java(TM) 6 Update 13 <<< 5/29/09
Sun Java - JRE 6 Update 14 released
(optional)

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20 <<< uninstall this old version.

Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

And since last time I've uninstalled AVG and installed Avira AntiVirus and scanned with it (still nothing),
I personally run AVG free 8.5 but there is nothing wrong with Avira.

Let's clean a little and do a couple of good scans to be sure.
1) You have old McAfee programs showing in the log, run this tool to make sure leftover McAfee is not interferring with your resident antivirus or firewall: McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool
http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VSOCheckTask] "C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\VSO\mcmnhdlr.exe" /checktask
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VirusScan Online] C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OASClnt] C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\oasclnt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSKDetectorExe] C:\Program Files\McAfee\SpamKiller\MSKDetct.exe /uninstall
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSKAGENTEXE] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MskAgent.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFExe] C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

6) Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner(KOS)

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
10. Copy and paste that information in your next post

Recap: Post the log from MBAM, the scan results from KOS and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Let's see...

I uninstalled the older version of Spybot Search & Destroy, and checked my Flash version (it's the latest, really.) I also ran the McAffee tool to delete those items.

Here's the rest of the logs (no word wrap this time!)

Few questions here: Can I roll back my MSConfig back to Selective Start-up at this time? I really can't stand having all these memory hogs and unnecessary programs on boot-up. Question two: I heard it's generally not a good idea to have two anti-spyware programs together just like it's generally not a good idea to have two antivirus programs together. Should I uninstall Spybot or keep it and Malwarebytes together?

Thanks for your help so far!

I am not really seeing anything, the items KOS located are likely false positives? You can check them if you wish here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ you may need to show all files and folders to see this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp
Scan these two in red and if they come back as infected, delete them.
C:\sysreset\mirc.exe
H:\i386\Apps\App00577\comps\toolbar\toolbr.exe

Return to Selective Startup when you wish. Here is information that may help your computer run better:

I have both MBAM and Spybot S&D installed on my computers and use them both as backup on demand scanners, they work well together. After you review information from experts I am about to post, you may want to consider Windows Defender which is free from Microsoft and runs in realtime.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

I suggest you clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
