Hi Everyone,

I'm not actually sure if my PC has an infection or not, however, it has been displaying a number behaviors that seem to indicate an infection of some sort.

Everything has been running slower than molasses in Alaska for several weeks now.

The PC is a HP povilion 512n. It is running Windows XP Home Edition with SP3 installed.

I am using COMODO PRO Anti Virus, and Firewall, and I have SpyBot S & D, and MalwareBytes installed.

Now to describe some of the symptoms that lead me to wonder if this machine has become infected.

Several weeks ago I started having problems with IE7. It had started running pretty slow, and I kept getting a nag screen to upgrade or update to IE8.

So I decided to upgrade. After doing that I find myself stuck with an IE* Browser that says "Powered by Yahoo" on it, and that's when my troubles really started getting bad.

It can take as long as seven to ten minutes for that IE8 browser to open, and five minutes or longer for a new page to load.

Right about the same time that I had upgraded to IE8 SpyBot S & D started hanging up and refusing to load, and MalwareBytes did the same thing.

I have uninstalled, then downloaded, and reinstalled both SpyBot, and MalwareBytes, three times each. But neither one of them will load in regular mode, however, both of them will load and run in Safe Mode.

But this doesn't do me any good as I haven't been able to get either one of them updated, since this problem first started several weeks ago, and yet they both come up with clean logs when run in Safe Mode.

COMODO Anti Virus seems to be updating its self with no problem, and appears to be unaffected by whatever it is that is going on, and hasn't reported finding anything either.

I think I've covered everything so here's my HJT log, hope that it sheds some light on my problem.

I personally have to updated to IE8 yet and wil not until Microsoft works out all of the bugs.

You have your browser set to Yahoo as your Defaults which is why you see Yahoo with IE8. Do you know how to set your defaults to what you want?

3) Let's start with some cleaning and see how it goes.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

(if you have to run MBAM in Safe Mode, that is not a problem, just be sure you are running the newest Database: (Database 2286 Date 6/16/2009) and that you run it according to these instructions.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.

Rats...! I had started a reply to you last night but something caused Firefox to die on me and I lost everything that I had written.

So here I go again.

Sorry about the TeaTimer thingy having still been on. As I couldn't get SpyBot to load I hadn't been able to turn it off. Not to worry, I discovered that I could turn it off from its Icon in my system tray.

No, I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't a clue as to how to set my browsers default settings... but I sure would like to know so that I can kick that Yahoo powered thing to the curb.

I would also like to know how to roll my browser back to IE 6, where it was to begin with.

I'm not too sure but I think that my IE got changed from IE 6 to IE 7 when I had installed the SP 3 for Windows XP. All I do know is that IE 7 had mysteriously appeared, and had been giving me trouble from the time that it first got on my PC. It was also boasting that it was powered by Yahoo too.

That was the reason that I had gone to Microsofts site and downloaded their IE 8. Not because I thought that IE 8 would be any better, but in an attempt to get the heck away from that Powered by Yahoo thing.

I perused, then bookmarked, all of the links that you gave in in step "1.)", as well as in step "2.). Now I think that I understand why IE 8 was always opening seven or eight different pages that I hadn't intended to visit. I want to get rid of that "Ask" toolbar thing too.

Moving on to step "3.)", I can't run SpyBot as something has started interfering with it loading... I believe ever since I installed that SP3 for Windows XP. Nevertheless, I have been able to disable TT from within my sys tray.

I already use ATF regularly, I ran it, then ran the HJT and followed your instruction there too.

I already have Malwarebytes on my desktop, however, on the rare occasion that it will actually load up, I can't get it to update. It runs throught the motions, but then when I try to install the updates something causes it to crash.

I even followed their instructions and renamed MBAM.EXE, that didn't help either.

My trouble with both SpyBot and Malwarebytes seem to have started just after I installed that SP 3 too.

Hi Wendy, I promise to either answer or direct you to where you can get answers for all questions before we finish, I would like to concentrate on why you can't run anything first, likely a hidden rootkit infection.

We will use combofix to find out what is there, read and follow these directions carefully.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from here:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Hi pskelley, Thanks for the reply.

OK, I have ComboFix on my desktop, TT has been disabled, and I have, or at least thought that I had, disabled my Anti Virus. But there's something about that thing that just isn't letting ComboFix run unimpeded.

I am having to sit here, clicking away, to give permissions to all kinds of stuff for it to run.

Can I run ComboFix in Safe Mode? That seems to be the only way that I can get my AV not to start so that it will leave me alone.

I won't do anything else until I hear back from you.

If you can't turn everything off, proceed anyway. combofix can be run in safe mode. What is important is getting it to run.

Hi pskelley,Thanks for the reply.

OK, I have a couple of new developments. !.) When I tried running ComboFix in Safe Mode it told me that COMODO's resident protection was running, or something to that effect, and advised me not to proceed.

As there weren't any Icons showing in the sys tray I opened Task Manager to see what was running. Attached is a screen shot of the processes that were running.

I think the second one down has something to do with browser security, however, I'm not really sure, and as I don't think that I am supposed to be ending running processes with Task Manager, I just left everything alone and rebooted.

2.) When I booted back into standard mode I disconnected from the internet, and completely shut down COMODO, then attempted to run ComboFix.

When I did I got a message saying that Windows couldn't find C:\32788R22FWJFW\hidec.exe

Then a Warning message from ComboFix popped up saying that something was corrupted and advising me not to proceed. It told me to go to bleepingcomputers.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix to download another copy.

There was also a note that said --> Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus "Virut".

And when I clicked the OK button everything just vanished... including the desktop icon for ComboFix.

Anyway, I am off to get a fresh copy of ComboFix, but I won't do anything with it until I hear back from you.

That is a very bad infection and if combofix reports it, it is going to be there. We can try another scan to show the active infection if you wish.

This machine needs to be formatted.

This system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

Hi, I think my AV had killed some of ComboFix files and that I had gotten a false positive on that.

I ran DrWeb and everything looked OK. What other scan did you have in mind?

How do I change my browser default so that I can get rid of that Powered by Yahoo thing in IE8?

1) Please delete the copy of combofix and download a new copy, follow the directions carefully I posted in my post #6. Run combofix and post the log that results.

5. This will start the program and scan your system.
6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
9. Save the file to your desktop.
